Because of countries like Germany and Argentina not doing so well in their first games they are no longer favourites to win their Groups.
I’ve just gone through current betting odds for each Group and how (if bookies are correct) how the draw would match up. ie Russia are favourites to win Group A so I’ve put them as Group winners and Uruguay as second favourite get the slot for finishing second. eg second of Group E Germany would play winners of Group F Brazil.
In one half of the draw the next round would be:
Germany Vs Brazil
Japan Vs Belgium
Portugal Vs Russia
Argentina Vs FranceWith if looking at current odds for outright winning the World Cup (shortest priced winning) the quarter finals would be:
Brazil Vs Belgium
Portugal Vs France…And so from this half of the draw:
Semi-Final Brazil Vs France with the winners…
BrazilThe other half would be:
Mexico Vs Serbia
Senegal Vs England
Uruguay Vs Spain
Croatia Vs DenmarkWith if looking at current odds for outright winning the World Cup (shortest priced winning) the quarter finals would be:
Mexico Vs England
Spain Vs Croatia…so from this half of the draw:
Semi-Final England Vs Spain with the winners:
SpainIf England were to win their Group you can swap them with Belgium and a much harder way to the Final.
So as it stands the liklihood of England getting to the Semi-Final and/or Final is greater if we lose to Belgium…
And Spain only need to do less well than Portugal in their last match for those two teams to swap… Leading to (if current bookies odds are right) England reaching the Final! Please lose to Belgium Mr Southgate!
Value Is EverythingJune 21, 2018 at 04:39 #1357679Mexico and Russia have arguably been the best 2 sides so far so don’t think any route will be particularly easy.
June 21, 2018 at 18:14 #1357831It will be a draw so if both win the their next games it will be on goal difference unless they have changed the rules

June 21, 2018 at 23:25 #1357868Yes Nathan, overall GD is the first tie breaker if level on points, then goals scored. If still level it’s down to the match(es) between the tied teams.
Oddly, a Belgium win or draw against Tunisia is preferable as England can then guarantee progress with a win against Panama. A Tunisia win (admittedly unlikely) opens up the distinct possibility of a three way tie on six points. And given Ginger’s assessment, we really should be hoping for a Belgium win on Saturday to maximise their chances of topping the group.
June 21, 2018 at 23:48 #1357879Hopefully Belgium win 2 or 3 nil
then England win by the same then they can play out the 0-0 draw
to be honest though anything could still happen, Germany could still top their group with two wins and Argentina are getting their bags packed as we speak with Diego Maradona complementing coming out of retirement to play along side the Mess, Gonzalo Piguaín and Sergio Agoalno.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

Only thing that separates Spain and Portugal in the table right now is their discipline records. Be strange if the difference between qualifying and not qualifying is a booking.

That’s just a false statement, ham. Or are you going to Lay me 2000/1 England to reach the final? You’re missing the point. Every team has a chance of going all the way to the final and even winning the final – no matter how small that chance is. What I am saying is if earlier games go as expected then the World Cup draw means we’d have a greater chance of getting to the final if finishing second in our Group than winning – because of who we’d probably play to get there.
Value Is EverythingJune 25, 2018 at 20:05 #1358548If the Spain and Portugal matches remain as they are at half time it’s going to be even more important for England to lose to Belgium.
Value Is EverythingJune 25, 2018 at 20:17 #1358549Don’t need to lose a draw and 2 more bookings would do

June 25, 2018 at 20:37 #1358550Dead right, Nathan. But Belgium will also be getting bookings.
If Brazil win their group and Germany finish second in theirs (both likely) niether Belgium or England will want to finish top.
Match between England and Belgium might come down to who scores the least own goals.
Value Is EverythingJune 25, 2018 at 20:43 #1358551If Iran were to get a goal and Marrocco get another, Spain go out.

own goals don’t count as a scorerCan’t find any bookings market on oddschecker but I’m sure skybet will take a request a bet on it

June 25, 2018 at 20:52 #1358553If Southgate was going to do this properly and I don’t think he’d even think about it, it would pay for him to change the whole team. That way his key players would get a rest and the fringe players can sacrifice the bookings to prevent the key players getting suspending later on in the cup.

tbh Nathan, I think it will virtually all change. In a dead rubber where the loser has the advantage why chance a key player being booked or sent off? Perhaps Kane will get a half along with Sterling. Kane wants to be top scorer and Sterling needs a goal to get his confidence back – otherwise he’ll need to be replaced in the next round.
If there’s no or very few changes – and they lose – it could ruin all the team’s confidence.
If losing when it’s virtually a whole different team, confidence remains good amongst the A team.Value Is Everything - AuthorPosts
