Always love the big Cambridgeshire/Cesarewitch Meetings at Newmarket, but today’s Card is a shocker, with very little to get excited about.
Was going to sit it out, but as I said, I usually enjoy it, so had to have a bet. He looks held by Withold, but around 9’s, I honestly think Ranch Hand can run a big race, and I’ll try to beat that 9’s.
The four places for Lady of Aran pulls me in, and if she drifts, I’ll have a go.
Very interested to see Redford Road start out over fences at Perth, and though not a betting race, looking forward to see how gets on.
Standout race of the day is the big staying Handicap at Listowel. Old regular Western Boy is a crazy 50’s here. Yes, he’s getting on, and you never know what you’re going to get, but he’s well drawn, and showed some real enthusiasm last time out. Gave Melburnian good shout after his Newmarket run last year, but this season has been a washout. I’d expect better, though the draw is tough. He’ll have to get some ride to feature here, but seriously considered. I’ll top up again the pair of them if I see bigger.
1535 Newmarket – Ranch Hand
1555 Listowel – Western Boy 50’s EW 4pls
1555 Listowel – Melburnian 22’sSeptember 24, 2020 at 19:34 #1503154VtC – A stellar selection! Hope you did back Lady of Aran – she ran a fine race.
September 25, 2020 at 00:32 #1503185Thanks mate, a really good day that.
I totally missed the 9’s on Ranch Hand, and had to settle for 9-2, then when he went back out to 13-2, I had more on, so the SP of 15-2 was unreal.
Yup, ended up with Lady of Aran as well, and managed to get 10’s this morning, and delighted with her.
Very decent return from Melburnian as well. An absolute cert of a winner, until he got seriously hampered close to home, but I got my lay in comfortably, and although I wasn’t happy at the time, I was afterwards. That’s the performance I was waiting on from him, and they let him loose today. More to come from him.
September 25, 2020 at 02:35 #1503190Second day at Newmarket is a bit better, and The Joel Stakes is a real puzzle. I’d be surprised if Benbatl doesn’t win, but certainly not betting him at that price. With the prospect of a couple of Non Runners, I’ll wait just now, but at the moment not betting any of them, but I’d consider forecasts and tricasts with Duke of Hazzard, Regal Reality, and Zabeel Prince. Certainly sitting it out at the moment though.
Crossford really impressed me at York, and he’s one I’m going to follow closely in the future, but too short today. Even shorter is Monday. I’ve already bet her for The 1000 Guineas and Oaks (there’s a sentence I’ve never used before), and I’m hopeful of a big run. Also considering her for The Fillies Mile.
At Listowel, the 1515 is a cracker, and although not quite the quality of The Joel Stakes, it’s certainly the most competitive race of the day. I’m reluctant to desert Nibblers Charm, who did me proud at Galway, but I’ll side with Golden Spear here. I like him for The Cesarewitch, and he advertised his claims for that last time, coming back to form, and he looks primed for a bold show here, with Robbie Power up.
The Southampton Chase is a belter too. This might be the time to finally catch Treaceysenniscorthy, and old Kilkishen is interesting down in trip, back over fences. The 11-2 available for Treaceys looks fair, while I’ll not be surprised to beat the 22’s Kilkishen.
Midnights Legacy was too bad to be true at York, and though I’ll be a bit more cautious than I was with him here in June, I’ll give him another chance over this trip.
Carry On was a horse who caught my eye a couple of years back, but he’s achieved little. I’ll give him a chance in the last at Uttoxeter. Coming down the weights, better last time, and jock takes a few pounds off. Worth a go at current price.
September 25, 2020 at 12:07 #1503232Few Non Runners taken out, and I laid back Carry On. I’ll only bet him if there’s any joy earlier.
Decided to chance the two left in The Joel Stakes.
Still working out that 1515 at Listowel, now that John Ess is out, and will pick one from this trio….
Nibblers Charm
Moon Over Germany
Whirling DervishLadbroke Hurdle – Golden Spear 8’s
Joel Stakes – Regal Reality 11’s
Joel Stakes – Zabeel Prince 14’s
Southampton – Treaceysenniscorthy 11-2
Southampton – Kilkishen
1635 Haydock – Midnights Legacy 6’sSeptember 25, 2020 at 12:36 #1503242Should give old Gumball a mention as well. Runs in Novice Chase at Uttoxeter today.
Was going to put him on notebook thread, but that would be a bit hypocritical, as not totally enamoured at him going over fences.
If he takes to it, and I hope I’m wrong on that front, then he might be of interest later in the season.
September 25, 2020 at 21:21 #1503414You’re ticking along nicely VtC. I see Winter Escape is running tomorrow and I know he’s one you used to look out for. I thought he looked happy to be back with his original yard last time, might give him a go here.
September 25, 2020 at 23:29 #1503436Cheers Grass, going very well, and just got to keep it going. Tail end of August was a bit poor, but picked back up.
Yeah, good old Winter Escape, definitely betting him tomorrow. I’ve not had actually had too much joy from him, but last seasons Paddy Power was the only big bet I’ve had on him, so I’ll be happy to win that back from him.
September 26, 2020 at 00:38 #1503448Won’t take long to go over Fridays selections.
Regal Reality was a decent selection, but sadly win only, and didn’t get near laying off either, despite the proximity to the winner.
The fact I’ve nothing much to say on the others, really sums it up, though Treaceysenniscorthy will probably be bet in a couple of the big Irish Handicaps through the season.
September 26, 2020 at 01:35 #1503452All about The Cambridgeshire today, and though by far a vintage renewal, still one of the best races of the season.
Not mad on anything this year, and I’ve landed on Sir Busker and Anythingtoday. Took 14’s Sir Busker Antepost, but he’s now bigger, decided to go with him when he was 25’s, best I got was 16’s.
I’ll add an outsider, and it’ll be either Afaak, or Zhui Feng.
That’s it for Newmarket though, and it’s another poor card, it’s been a poor meeting this year.
Much better at Haydock and Listowel though, with some decent races at both tracks.
Really looking forward to Goshen at Haydock. Obviously not betting him at the price, but I’d like to see him book his ticket for The Long Distance Cup. I don’t think it’s a given, as the ground may be an issue. I was quite interested in Call Me Ginger earlier on the card, but he’s far too short.
I almost bet Mr Carpenter again, but after wins off him at 100’s, and 40’s this season, I’ll cheer him home without a bet today. It’ll be a while before he’s off the radar. The one I will bet is Nicholas T. Hardly a massive bet, but below his last winning mark, and he’s already paid his way for me this year.
At Listowel, as discussed with Grass, I’ll be with Winter Escape, and I’ve also went with Father Jed.
I’ll stand by Romantic Proposal at The Curragh, and looks like she’ll go off overpriced.
1405 Haydock – Nicholas T 25’s
Cambridgeshire – Anythingtoday 16’s
Cambridgeshire – Sir Busker 16’s
1550 Curragh – Romantic Proposal 16’s
1630 Listowel – Winter Escape 13-2
1700 Listowel – Father JedSeptember 27, 2020 at 09:27 #1503631Happy enough with that yesterday.
Romantic Proposal was my biggest bet by far, and comfortably made a profit on her in running, while Winter Escape winning at 13-2, and the EW on Father Jed at 20’s, rounded the day off nicely.
Nicholas T was average, while the only consolation to take from The Cambridgeshire was that it was a much reduced betting race for me this year. Normally a losing race in these big ones (like The Stewards Cup earlier in the season) will ensure a losing day no matter what, but I got away with it with the lower stakes yesterday.
As per, should follow on a profitable day with more today, but the cards are poor. I love the big Sunday cards at The Curragh, but it looks average today.
Only two bets, both at Musselburgh.
1450 Eeh Bah Gum 11’s
1740 Zabeel Star EWSeptember 27, 2020 at 20:14 #1503695He might just have got pipped for third, but Zabeel Star got me decent profit for the day, still can’t believe he didn’t win, looked a certainty till close home. Bet him earlier in the season at much shorter odds, he’s now one one to follow when bigger odds (33’s EW and 42’s today).
Eeh Bah Gum was a notebook horse early last season, but bar including him in perms earlier this month, that was the first time since last summer that I backed him outright. I doubt I’ll back him any time soon.
September 28, 2020 at 13:30 #1503741Keeping it going today.
I put up Celestial Bliss early in the season, after he had caught my eye on debut, but he was pretty average. He’s had a wind op, and I’m hoping that can make a difference. I took 14’s, but 16’s currently available. I really like the fav Ayr Poet, and reckon connections will have some fun with him over the next few seasons, but today I’ll stick with Celestial.
At Bath, I’ve went with Ice Age. I bet him a couple of times in the past, with mixed results, but I just thought he was seriously overpriced at 28’s. I missed that though, but took 25’s, to get the four places. He’s still available at 18, 20’s in places, and I topped up a wee bit.
Celestial Bliss 14’s
Ice Age 25’s EW 4 PlacesSeptember 28, 2020 at 21:55 #1503819An “almost” day today.
Money back for Celestial Bliss in running, albeit just for Stakes back rather than profit. At Bath, Ice Age grabbed the 4th……..but a late Non Runner meant Skybet reverted to 3 places.
October 3, 2020 at 00:03 #1504586Smashing days racing tomorrow, and I’ll no spend too much time going over them, as most covered in Big Races Section.
Billesdon Brook a few points bigger now, but I won’t top up on her. I’ll do a few perms though, and I’ll least get the price then. Trees Valley is too short to bet on her own on a busy Saturday, but she still looks a fair price, and she makes the perms too.
Few others I’m looking at.
I bet Bowman earlier in the season, and he was very poor. Hard to justify in The Two Year Old Trophy, but around 40’s, I’ll have an interest.
So many good races tomorrow, it’s easy to overlook The PWC Champion Chase at Gowran, but it’s some race, and I’ll enjoy without a bet. In the next, I’m considering Static Jack and Kilkishen, but I’ll see how the day goes first.
Auction Stakes – George Scott 50’s EW
Prix De Royallieu – Pista 8’s
Sun Chariot – Billesdon Brook 8’s
Two Year Old Trophy – BowmanOctober 8, 2020 at 23:29 #1505386Didn’t get chance to go over Saturdays runners. Pista was very unlucky, understatement of the year, but nice profit in running, and that was a relief, considering how bad George Scott and Bowman were.
Much better on Sunday, only one runner, In Swoop in The Arc, and so bloody close, but another one to make a decent profit in running, and really chuffed with him.
October 8, 2020 at 23:53 #1505388Definitely playing Friday, and decent cards at Chepstow, Newmarket, and York.
First stop Chepstow, and that 1655 is standout race of the day, it’s a cracker. I’ve went with What A Moment at 11’s. Looked to have lost his way last year, but he shaped much better on final start, and I can’t leave him alone here, fresh from Wind Surgery, and with the handicapper giving him a chance.
I want a saver in this, but it’s such a strong race that I could bet half of them, but finally went with old favourite Theatre Guide, who should be bang there.
In The Persian War, McFabulous returns, and though too short here, I like him for The Stayers, and will watch closely.
Up at York, Euchen Glen has the small matter of Logician to deal with in The Cumberland Lodge, and it should be just beyond him, but I’ve taken 25’s, and will have a go again, with a view to laying in running.
The 1545 is a really strong race as well, but so many angles in it, I’ve decided to sit it out.
At Newmarket I’ve got a couple Antepost in The Challenge Stakes, while The Old Rowley Cup is seriously tight. I was on the verge of sitting it out, with so many unexposed types in it, but I’ll have an EW on Tritonic for interest.
Cumberland Lodge – Euchen Glen 25’s
Challenge Stakes – Glorious Journey 10’s
Challenge Stakes – Snazzy Jazzy 14’s
Old Rowley Cup – Tritonic EW 5 Places
1655 Chepstow – What A Moment 11’s
1655 Chepstow – Theatre Guide - AuthorPosts
