Of course there’s one thing that none of us "oldies" can tell and that’s what we’d have been like how ever many years ago, if the internet had been around, and a chance to do what Jackane did last week arose-we’d have all taken that chance and probably posted about it in a fairly similar way.
If my 2002 adventures in Dubai had happened when I was 18 or even 21 and not when I was 38-there’s no doubt i’d have posted about it on somewhere like here.
October 9, 2006 at 08:52 #97037fun for the tens of thousands of people who read this column and take what Haigh says as gospel
I’ll just save Paul the trouble of posting the word:
LOL.

Are you saying none of the 80,000 buyers (approx) read his column or Haigh wrote trash that is not to be taken seriously
October 9, 2006 at 09:43 #97039This reminds me of a few years ago when I had a little time on my hands and used to write letters to the Post occasionally.
I once had a provocative semi-serious letter published proclaiming that women should be barred from race courses, betting shops and all other horse racing related arena. This caused quite a commotion and a letters page was handed over almost in it’s entirety to vitriolic responses from women requesting my gonads for adornments! I even made a couple of paragraphs in Zorro’s column where he opined that I might be coat trailing but advised me not to voice my opinion within hitting distance of Mrs J Pitman! All this on a Saturday too – Paddy Power day at Cheltenham.
All good fun, although I prayed that one particular women who I nicknamed ‘Horsey Spice’ (relevant at the time),and entered into letter ping pong with, would never find my exact address!
One piece of advice Jackane24, always ask yourself the Andy Millman question – "Is he having a laugh"?
October 9, 2006 at 09:48 #97040Considerable middle ground available between ‘writing trash’ and being ‘taken as gospel’.
Entertainingly little piece, IMO, and no different to thousands of other racing snippets in its theme of ‘funny things said by racegoers’. ÂÂÂ
In addition, columns such as Marcus Armitage’s regularly portray obscure point-to-point trainers/jockeys/journalists/bloodstock agents as hopeless drivers/drunks/skiers/husbands. Some embarrass themselves by threatening to sue, most try to take it like a man. As Jackane has not been slandered (nothing factual incorrect was written about him) I suggest he does the latter – and bears in mind that if he does become a proper journalist there will be plenty of people lining up to take a pop at him, and complain about the content of his articles.
Yes, amusing that Paul Haigh has to use something trivial (apologies jackane) posted on a forum to fill his column inches
There probably is plenty of middle ground.
There are also maybe a few aspiring journalist’s or maybe even former Sportsman employees like Simon Rowlands, Ian Dean, Graham North, David Cleary etc who would like the chance to write about relevant racing issues for the RP instead of taking the pee out of obscure racing and forum people
October 9, 2006 at 11:00 #97043My humour is well in tact tdk.
When a writer of such so called "star quality" has to resort to attacking a forum post/er for few cheap laughs, when there are more revelant issues that would have probably created a reaction shows how the racing public is taken for granted by those at the RP imhaho
Just a shame Rowlands and his team are no more, then maybe this tripe would not appear in the RP and it would be worth buying

October 9, 2006 at 11:10 #97044Thankyou, Dark Knight.
The purpose was to amuse not to lecture. For some it worked, for others it obviously didn’t. It was written tongue in cheek ("this impertinent youth"?) and without any malicious intent.
Jackane, I’ve no idea who you are. So why would I want to humiliate you? You think that was a hatchet job? That was what’s called gentle ribbing. You really must learn to tell the difference between the two.
As for Deep Impact and the Arc, whoever it was, I’ve already written several times and in several places that I got it wrong and regret having done so. The mistake cost me money, and the advice was given in good faith. I remain convinced though that, for whatever reason, the horse didn’t give his running – anymore than Hurricane Run did, or Shirocco.
Some things are sent to try us.
October 9, 2006 at 11:18 #97045Zorro
Take a tongue in cheek swipe at Tom Segals selections that finished nearer last than first the other day or take a swipe at the spotlighters analysis/tissues and see if your fellow RP employees can take the gentle ribbing

October 9, 2006 at 11:25 #97046Awww come on EW
When spotlight says "leave this one alone cos the jockey’s a b*****d
"Or Tom Segal points out that "Cant back this cos Stoute (or whoever) knows nothing about racing"
Then they will be ridiculed by Zorro no doubt
October 9, 2006 at 11:30 #97047Many thanks to EW, Drone and the others that have the moral well-being to see that what Haigh wrote about was wrong and sticking up for me.
‘I remain convinced though that, for whatever reason, the horse didn’t give his running – anymore than Hurricane Run did, or Shirocco.’
Deep Impact gave his running. His jockey didn’t. Take canNOT ride a finish. Take a look at the Arima Kinen from last year, when Heart’s Cry beat DI, and Take is riding a very similar weak finish, also shown aboard Zenno Rob Roy at last year’s Ebor meeting. Shirocco wasn’t right, and HR was blocked in, and just didn’t have the luck that he happened to have last year.
Seabird – No I’m not actually working at the moment. I had a bit of money for my Longchamp trip, but I’m a member at both Newbury and Windsor, so all it costs is the petrol.

I cannot wait to read the copy and pasted article, but somehow i doubt i’ll see it in my lifetime
October 9, 2006 at 11:37 #97049"but I’m a member at both Newbury and Windsor, so all it costs is the petrol."
Are you forgetting the membership fee for Newbury and Windsor?
October 9, 2006 at 11:40 #97050Of course, but I don’t have to pay it at the end of the year. Paid already. Newbury was £65 and I think Windsor was £165.
October 9, 2006 at 11:44 #97051OK. I’ve tried to make peace.
What was it Captain Mainwaring used to say to Pike?
You may be right about Take’s finishes though.
October 9, 2006 at 12:00 #97052Moral wellbeing? So its ok to call someone horrible, and someone else a ‘b*****d
’ in a public forum, but not ok to be called ‘intrepid’ and ‘Walter Mitty’?
You say ‘ripped to shreds’, but it was hardly critical, if a little sceptical. He almost sounds admiring of your brass neck.
If you really want to read a hatchet job, I’ll have a go (purely for demonstration purposes) to prove that, using your source material, you got off lightly.
