Whilst all this is very interesting, perhaps a question to ask is why the Racing Post’s star columnist – their billing not mine – should choose to devote a large chunk of his column to dumping on an eighteen year old kid?
"Star" columnists usually offer insightful opinions on major issues. Matters like the effects of the severe cut backs in prize money by the Levy Board and some tracks, the government renaging on it’s promise to sell the Tote to racing, the real problems caused by 48 hour decs, deliberate overwatering at some tracks, the inclusion of banded racing in main cards, what will happen to the HRRA when it is taken under the wing of the BHB are just some of the issues that are going to have quite an effect on the future of horseracing in the UK.
So why pick on Jackane? With all due respect to him and this Forum, a topic which wouldn’t mean a thing to the 90,000 or so purchasers of the RP who are not members of TRF.
Stuck for something to write about and up against a deadline?

October 8, 2006 at 21:29 #97013That is an excellent point richard. Didn’t actually think of it myself.
Especially after he said ‘Innocence is always forgivable’ the other day.
Maybe it’s his sick way of teaching me a lesson?
October 8, 2006 at 21:30 #97014actualite (dunno how to do those little slanty line dealies – stavros will need to show me).
Actualité??
C’est très facile, ma sauterelle.
Well said Richard, maybe if said columnist can’t find owt better to write about, he should retire and give one of the TRF’s aspiring racing journo’s a chance to apply for his post
October 9, 2006 at 00:12 #97017EW, can’t help but advise you on your grammar, as you have repeated the mistake at least twice.
1 Journo, 2 Journos (singular, plural)
Journo’s = Journo is, ie. Journo is going, Journo’s going
Not patronising you at all – the majority of the British public doesn’t know how to use apostrophes. I blame the teachers!
I remember walking past Woolworth’s a while back, and I saw a sign…
MP3 PLAYER’S ON SALE
They devoted a huge sign to just ONE MP3 player?!?!

PMSL
A bit of advice if i may, instead of spending time correcting my gramma, spend the time learning about horse racing, that includes how ratings, speedfigures etc are compiled
knowledge in these and other analysis variables for this great game will not only enhance your chances of success in your chosen profession, but will more than likely make you a far better journalist imhaho

October 9, 2006 at 00:39 #97019Thanks EW. I PMd a couple of guys on TRF quite a few times about ratings and how they were compiled, but they didn’t actually get back to me.
If anyone on here would be willing to spend 5-10 minutes writing out how they compile their ratings, I would be very interested to read. Thanks
October 9, 2006 at 00:48 #97020Have a look in Archives , there may be some stuff in there, but reading how Timeform do it will give you a good start
Click features> how TF handicaps horses and How TF handicaps 2yo’s
October 9, 2006 at 01:04 #97021Eeek! Just read it…..all very complicated….
I think I’ll read it again!
EDIT – Btw EW – 2yos (plural), not 2yo’s (2yo is)!!! ;)
Thanks for the Timeform advice

Yer wasting valuable time on correcting my grammar
Search in horse racing for words like topspeed, handicapping, speedfigures etc and you get stuff like this

October 9, 2006 at 02:05 #97024Phew – just went through a couple of ratings-orientated threads. Complicated stuff!
I’ll sit down on Wednesday (Windsor today, Newbury tomorrow  ) and go through myself and apply the ratings to the card and see what happens.
Thanks for doing a check for me EW
I’ll try to refrain from correcting your shocking grammar in the future  ;)
Trackside – it was only funny because he twisted my words, and also because he used old comments by me, that were either meant as a joke, or were misinterpreted.
My little rant a couple of days ago surely cleared up the ‘debate’ on talking to trainers (Fabre) while they saddle 73 Group 1 runners, and the fact that I didn’t? I echoed a comment made by Maxilon and DJ…so why weren’t they mentioned in the column? Is it because they are a few years older than me?
And surely I made my TRUE thoughts on Mac known a few days ago? Or maybe if he didn’t see that comment, then why not also bring in EC who said he liked Mac? Or is it because EC is far older than me that he failed to mention him? Not to mention Haigh knows, just like everyone else on here knows, without a shadow of a doubt that EC and I just took the p*ss when we said we liked him.
And I must by now have cleared up that I did not speak to Magnier, Tabor or Smith other than to ask them for autographs? Nothing else.
The column he wrote must have been written on Tuesday since I did most of my little rants defending myself since then. But then again, maybe he didn’t. Maybe he just thought to himself that since I’m 18, I won’t mind getting walked all over. His attitude stinks. He says ‘it was just a bit of fun.’ Fun for who?
Fun for me? Being humiliated in a national newspaper, one I hopeD to be writing for in a few years time? Or fun for the tens of thousands of people who read this column and take what Haigh says as gospel?
What is the first thing about Haigh mentions about me in his column? My age. ‘Jackane, who as it turns out is not 24 at all but 18….’
Yet he said just days ago, ‘innocence is forgivable.’
I don’t know about EC and Stav, but it certainly seems like Zorro has got a split personality :o
This wasn’t really a post I wanted to be my 1000th, but there you go……
Jackane,
I know my failings, i chose not to go school and i’ll stand for so much, but as you don’t like Paul Haigh taking the p**s
out of you, i don’t like you taking the p**s
out of meIn other words – GROW THE FECK UP
October 9, 2006 at 02:30 #97029EW, I was joking – wasn’t attempting to insult you in the slightest, hence the ;)

I know, but even with attached smiley the joke becomes boring and insulting after so long tbh

October 9, 2006 at 07:35 #97032An unnecessary, lazy, moderately spiteful little article aimed between the eyes of a soft target.
Haigh lacks the class, style, panache and insight of an Ashforth or Carnaby (of blessed memory). Red Top rather than Broadsheet; Accrington Stanley rather than Arsenal.
There’s no such thing as bad publicity though Jackane. So calm down and continue to post your ‘articles’ here for constructive dissection.
Personally I’d be more interested to read a ‘my day at Wincanton’ on a winter thursday if you’d care to oblige sometime. Henry Daly and Twister love the press and relish the public asking them for autographs. Go for it.
October 9, 2006 at 07:48 #97035That last sentence is just a touch mischievious, Drone.;)
Jackane, can I ask if you are employed at the moment?
Longchamp last weekend, Windsor today, Newbury tomorrow it seems that you must be doing something right.
Why don’t you do reviews of the racing at Windor and Newbury and post them up here!?
Can I suggest that you leave out the name-dropping and concentrate on the horses.;)
Colin
