Be interesting to see what you come up with Sal.
Sure, Jackane is young and enthusiastic and so should be given some leeway, but his opinions are controversial and when people such as Zorro diagree, they have the power to do a damn good p**s
-take. At the end of the day though, by posting things such as so and so is a ******* you leave yourself open to abuse becuase that isn’t a statement of fact that is an opinion.I see you more as a columnist than reporter Jackane given that you are not afraid to input your opinion but I think you’d be a very good columnist!
October 9, 2006 at 12:08 #97054Why all the fuss, we know all about J24’s scribblings. If you make bold statements you must expect the flak. It used to be be nearly every post he made getting ripped to shreds for their inaccuracies, whether people have grown immune or the content has improved (i err on the side of the former) i do not know or care. He told us not so long ago that his stats were wrong because he couldn’t afford broadband, yet pops up at the Derby and the Arc and no doubt the Breeders Cup with his multi millionaire chums from over the water. I would have no problem with J24 if he stuck to the facts (those in the public domain ) not in his brain. People are bound to wonder, what do you expect jack.
October 9, 2006 at 12:48 #97055Rather off beam, but I feel I should point out that grammatically speaking "2yo’s" is correct and "2yos" is incorrect. Apostrophes don’t just signify ownership, you know.
October 9, 2006 at 12:53 #97056I have tried to avoid saying anything here……but sadly can no longer do so. Firstly, Zorro’s piece was well written and extremely funny. Maybe more so for me than the RP’s other readers because I have witnessed Jackane first hand. I initially thought it was the youthfull exuberance that was his downfall, but have come to the conclusion that this young boy views the world from different coloured spectacles to the rest of us.
I just cannot understand why Jack24 feels that everything he says, no matter how absurd and moronic, is not open to any criticism whatsoever. Are we expected to blindly agree with all his rantings? My personal problem with Jackane is that he never ever listens to any of the advice so generously given to him.
Even now, after numerous people have complained about the way he states his views as fact, he comes out with :-
"Deep Impact gave his running. His jockey didn’t."
Then when Zorro gives him a gentle smack the toys get thrown out the pram!
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Jackane say he was gone for good from this place the last time people disagreed? You’re like an itch that won’t go away.
October 9, 2006 at 12:54 #97057Don’t agree, rory.
The apostrophe in 2yo’s is presumably meant to indicate a short form on account of missing letters. If so, why not 2y’o’s?
Surely, if you are going to abbreviate the singular form of the term, 2yo is acceptable, and the pluralisation of that should be 2yos, not 2yo’s.
October 9, 2006 at 13:09 #97058You make a reasonably convincing case there Prufrock, although it’s hardly classic grammar either way; it depends whether you accept "2yo" as an entity of its own rather than merely an abbreviation, which I suppose you must ~ perhaps Mr Haigh could write an aticle about it?
October 9, 2006 at 13:27 #97059Or even an article.
October 9, 2006 at 13:35 #97060Ah the floating apostrophe debate rears it’s head:
The 2yo ran well (singular)
The 2yos ran well (plural)
The 2yo’s race was good (singular possessive)
The 2yos’ race was good(plural possessive)
The 2yo’s a good horse (singular contraction)
The 2yos are good horses (plural non-contraction)
Agreed??
October 9, 2006 at 13:39 #97061Is it different for 3yo’s?
October 9, 2006 at 14:00 #97062"it’s" head?!?

My girlfriend is an editor and a lover of the proper use of grammer and punctuation (of which I am a butcher) and I have to admit that since meeting her Ive become shocked at just how many professional people such as poster and sign writers dont use proper grammer. I always use to think that any such thing in the public eye would always be 100% but that is not so. I dare say that some people here probably came from an era where there was more "encouragement" to learn this stuff at school.

October 9, 2006 at 14:44 #97064Perhaps Zorro can learn us all some proper grammar?

Yep no apostrophe required.
As Captain Mainwaring was also fond of saying "I wondered who would spot that"

What be that then?
You know I debated with myself over the spelling but frankly I was too lazy to look it up…rather hit this modern problem on the head there i feel.
Not really – I’m only 31 but still a complete gitsworth where that sort of thing is concerned. Getting a TEFL qualification a few years back and therewith compelling myself to explain the nuances of English grammar to foreign students certainly helped.

October 9, 2006 at 16:22 #97068This really is a good read.
October 9, 2006 at 16:47 #97069I would have thought that those blessed with the power of the press would be better employed using it to challenge more undesirable issues in racing’s esoteric little world than an 18 year old alleged fantasist posting on a web forum- but which one is the easier target and less able to defend himself?
