Rekindling; pleased for Joseph but couldn’t have a three year old. Glad Nakeeta got 5th.

Well played Rekindling backers. Good to see Joseph O Brien as the winning training as well at 24!Incredible!

Maybe in a few years time he will be trying to break his dads Group 1 record!

Humidor 10/1, Rekindling 12/1 and Max Dynamite 14/1 for me. Best of luck everyone, it’s going to be a long night. :good:

And a long night is made all that shorter. :yahoo:

You couldn’t write the script really, first winning Derbies together as father and son, now making the ‘race that stops a nation’ more of a family feud. Like Lloyd Williams said post-race, father had better watch out..

    video replay link here:

    http://racing.hkjc.com/racing/overseas/English/results.aspx?para=/20171107/S2/3

(if error message pops up, hover cursor over bottom right of replay box and click the grey Standard button that shows).

my takeaway is that for these days the Lazy Punter’s Melbourne Cup System puts too much emphasis on participation in the Aussie lead-up races (Makybe Diva, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, etc).

Well done Rekindling backers – you guys are on fire this morning. I really considered the colt but you can only back so many and I had a gut feeling the Aussies would keep it at home. How wrong was I. A clean sweep! I remember backing Rekindling for the Derby after he won the Ballysax and had him on my side when he won later at the Curragh so I’m happy I wasn’t wrong in thinking in the spring this was a nice horse. I never thought he’d prove it down under though. Again, well done to the winners. Most of the field never really got into it and the likes of Frankie never even threatened.

Steady on Steve :-) No cigar for the English still… Well done Ireland, No weight and a class horse was always a big chance if he ran up to his best.

    Well done Fellow Rekindling backers.

The guy on the video stood to win 1 million dollars if he picked the winner with a Bookies promo.

Well done the O’Briens . They have emulated another O’Brien father and son duo by taking first and second in a major race : David O’Brien , of course , trained Secreto to beat his father’s EL Gran Senor in the 1984 Derby .

Although I have attended The Melbourne Cup , it is not a race which gets me over excited . I suppose I can say the same thing about all handicap races on the flat . I put it down to the paucity of class among most of the runners . Rekindling was easily the best horse in this field , even though he could hardly win an argument in Europe all season – he finished 16th of 18 in our Derby , albeit he did improve by stepping up in trip . The same can be said of Johannes Vermeer . A wise decision to book Aussie jockeys for both horses.

Anyhow , congratulations to the backers of Rekindling . He was always travelling smoothly throughout the race and showed true grit and tenacity to get the better of Johannes Vermeer.
