Cheers One Eye and Crizzy, you couldn’t have made
a better observation and Connundrum, the reason I haven’t
replied to your constant baiting towards me, was that I was told
to ignore it a while back. There’s a simple term it’s called ‘rising above it’.
Anyway, Happy punting Friday

Terrible presenter, quite unprofessional. As a serious punter, if you’re having a bad day he’s the last
person you need to hear making jokes, I remember once he was making
horse noises after a race. Proper bellend.…and yet here we are some weeks later and Matthew is still tuning in to Chapman. Repetition, repetition. I’m not suggesting Matthew should entertain the idea of being a presenter but rather than just read his blunt critiques I’d be very interested to know exactly what constructive opinions he holds as to how a racing presenter or jockey should perform. In other words, let’s read about how Matthew would do things differently. Now that’s an attempt at constructive criticism. The bottom line is that Chapman has had more written about him on here than any other presenter and yet his viewing figures must be holding up or he wouldn’t still be in the job.
The question I asked Matthew is what qualifies him to be the resident forum critic? Of course, I’ve also been critical on here….but I don’t make it my sole aim in life which is how Matthew comes across.
And as for my ever having criticised a jockey? The probability is that I could probably have ridden a better race. So stick that in your pipe….
I’ve previously challenged Matthew to get him up on a horse and prove his horsemanship but he’s not taken me up on the offer. In fact, I’ll even lessen the challenge by taking him to the Jockey Club Museum in Newmarket High Street and put him up on a training ‘horse’. I’ll even ask the Curator to keep the speed down to a gentle canter.Ken
July 16, 2010 at 08:21 #306778For the love of God, give the guy a break Conundrum.
You don’t need to be a horseman to criticise a jockey and you don’t need to be Sir Michael Grade to have a liking/dislike for a TV presenter and their style.
July 16, 2010 at 08:28 #306780Matt rose to prominence in the early noughties as co-presenter of the new Stateside show and earned his reputation in presentation analysing American racing, before taking his shot at The Booth.
Swiftly working out that a straight approach wouldn’t attract and retain sufficient viewers, he and others engaged in an extended surreal conversation which lasted several years – not unlike a live version of The Ricky Gervais show, or a less extreme version of Derek and Clive – in order to keep evening viewers engaged with the often tedious material.
Chappers, and especially then flatmate, the much missed Dave Compton, could spend four or five hours discussing a range of random topics (Blackpool Pleasure Beach, football, the relative merits of Northern/Southern ladies, curry), in between sorting the runners and riders at Aqueduct; topics which had very little to do with racing, but which could be absorbing and thought provoking or conversely, spectacularly inane.
On Stateside in 2002, Chappers and Compo would be discussing the burger van at Killarney for weeks. Many writers have referred to racing as the Great Triviality and it is – think about it – and no-one in racing is more aware of this than Matt: That’s the main reason I rate him.
July 16, 2010 at 08:40 #306781Fair enough, David. I’ll go along with your request and avoid responding to those forumites who just seem to write balder dash and piffel. It’s not that I single Matthew out for any particular reason, it’s just that he seems to be in a league of his own when it comes to deserving of being asked to rationalise his opinions. Logic sometimes demands a response. Clearly, you’re quite content for Matthew to write whatever he wants without me being allowed to challenge him, for fear that it might develop into handbags at dawn, in a literal sense of course. So be it. Personally, I call it dumbing down.
All the same, good wishes.

Matt giving this thread a nice little mention on ATR a few minutes ago

really
Hi Matt
July 16, 2010 at 14:05 #306839Yes Matthew01, Matt give this thread a glowing reference.
I loved the bit where he said that he knows who you are, where you live, and where you drink

Only messing mate. Chappers hasn’t got where he has today without being able to handle a bit of criticism.
July 16, 2010 at 14:12 #306840Matt,
if you’re reading this any chance you could stop grovelling to
trainers, today it’s Charlie Swan, not denying you’re clued up on
racing subjects, but you don’t half get up peoples arses!
Matthew.
July 16, 2010 at 14:20 #306843I find it amazing the number of people who watch ATR when all the racing is on RUK
that’s when I really love Chapman presenting

Is there really much difference in him praising trainers/jockeys for recent form and you praising a jockey’s ride?
I’m not sure there is.July 16, 2010 at 14:34 #306848Matt,

I’m not sure there is.You’re speaking up without even hearing why I’m making a light hearted comment.
Matt was telling Charlie Swan how he looks so good for his age and he looks as good as he did 20 years ago, he was only making light hearted conversation, as i’m now making a light hearted joke of it.
Matt is now flirting with a female in the studio and doing very
well by the sounds of things, go on Chapman

Email the studio if you want his/their attention!
July 16, 2010 at 14:45 #306851Now, the minute ‘he’ realises that his thread has been seen by Chappers he quickly changes his tune and becomes a grovelling little toadey. Have the courage of your convictions.

Convictions? Haven’t got any?
As for changing my tune, I haven’t have I? I’ve just said that Chapman should stop getting up Trainers arses? Can’t believe you’re still on here tbh.
July 16, 2010 at 14:56 #306855Getting up trainer’s arses, or "light-hearted conversation"

Personally I think he’s top class with the trainers, asks the questions others wouldn’t have the coconuts to ask!

Both the comments are light hearted thehorsesmouth, well that’s how I meant them to be.
Anyway, weve had a debate similar to where this could go on again and I’d rather
not bore everyone with it, it’s all about opinions. - AuthorPosts
