Good piece by tom segal bemoaning the lack of top 3yos kept in training.should Australia, kingman and taghrooda not carry on next year then we’d better hope there is a couple of top horses amongst this seasons 2yos.

Good, I would suspect, only if you agree with him? Has he been in cuckoo land all these years? Unfortunately, a big part of Flat racing is about what happens off the track and that isn’t suddenly going to change. I think it would be hard to argue that any of three had been wrapped up in cotton wool.
August 31, 2014 at 20:38 #489568I’m afraid he is right unfortunately. 3yos rushed off to stud is far more the norm than it used to be which is a pity when you think back to some of the great king George’s and eclipses where the generations battled. I know it’s business for the likes of Australia but as it looks like he is still maturing and he could have been a monster racehorse at 4. Just a pity for the racing public IMHO.
August 31, 2014 at 23:30 #489575Rather short sighted to think that the best 3yo’s in training in Europe are in The British Isles. No?
September 1, 2014 at 09:45 #489583Hopefully a superstar will emerge away from these shores but what are the odds of them staying in training as a 4yo. Maybe I’m looking at it through rose tinted glasses but where are the mtotos and dahlias. They were two superb racehorses on their day. The only great horses that stay in training these days are stayers and hopefully we will see leading light strut his stuff for a few years yet. Only beaten once since his debut. Much underrated horse.
September 1, 2014 at 12:29 #489593John Gosden re the King George, talking on ATR:-
“I’ll be quite honest, our filly didn’t quite let herself go on the ground but I was not going to stand making excuses afterwards. I don’t believe in that, I don’t like anyone who whinges, but the ground was quick underneath and she was just holding back on it. It was the same for everyone and that’s why you don’t whinge, you just get on with it. She’s in great order and we’re pointing towards the Arc.
I take nothing from the filly that won. She’s very talented, beautifully bred and people forget she was favourite for the Guineas. She got lost early in the year and I think they changed the programme, put some condition on her and she came there with a lot of confidence behind her.
“I think they are two exceptional fillies and she liked fast ground more than we did. It was that ground where the grass was short with a little give on top and boom, very firm underneath. It wasn’t her favourite but you go there to race, not to moan about the ground.”This was regarding the Yorkshire Oaks, just had a brain fart moment when posting.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

September 22, 2014 at 12:33 #490730John gosden spent a short time with vincent obrien at ballydoyle and I believe handled the minstrel when winning the derby so maybe some of the ballydoyle habits have rubbed off on him. As I said before maybe an idea for the likes of aiden, gosden and stoute to have spokesman to speak to the press and leave them to concentrate on their horses. Your unlikely to get a reasoned answer after one of their favourite horses just got stuffed.
September 22, 2014 at 12:38 #490731Btw didn’t realise gosden was assistant to noël murless before becoming asst to Vincent obrien. If you can’t become a top trainer after working with these guys then you are in the wrong game. Would have handled the likes of alleged my fav ever horse who I saw win the voltigeur by ten lengths from the derby runner up,hot grove, the first time I went racing.
September 23, 2014 at 02:05 #490763Lets get back to Tapestry.Unplaced next run with Joseph in the irons. The more time the trainer spends with Joseph……… it turns out.Perhaps Joseph could be Aidan’s assistant rather than his animus in the saddle.
September 23, 2014 at 20:35 #490804Depends where tapestry goes. A wee break to either fillies or mares on champions day or breeders cup and tapestry will be bang there. Hopefully tapestry remains in training as she could be a cracking 4yo to look forward to.
