Thanks for the update on Poetic Power. I saw him entered up a couple of times recently but I assume the ground wasn’t in his favour.

It was disappointing that the Market Rasen race fell victim to the snow and though it was nice to see Crouching Harry get his win, the race was far from a fantastic one. Fatcatinthehat looked rather limited on his last two flat runs and though he probably should have won today, he wouldn’t be one of Willie Mullins’ leading lights.

Tomorrow’s juvenile at Sandown seemingly revolves around the two French imports. Jonjo O’Neill, seeking his first juvenile winner of the season, sends out Another Sensation whose close debut second to Le Grand Luce looks strong following the latter’s rise to prominence amongst the French ranks. Paul Nicholls saddles Valco De Touzaine who ran a decent third in an Auteuil conditions event but will have to carry a double penalty for two wins in the provinces. Juno The Muffinman also shoulders a double penalty for his wins at Plumpton and Warwick whilst Dollar Bill come off the back of a 33 length win at Folkestone in a bizarrely ran race where he was effectively the only fancied horse running to his merits.

This afternoon’s juvenile hurdle at Sandown produced a surprising result with Captain Cardington improving significantly on his Market Rasen debut. The money for the horse suggested a good run was expected on his debut for the new yard. Valco De Touzaine found the double penalty too much of a burden but should make a better chaser given his sire. Another Sensation looked to be closing in before unseating at the last although it can’t be said for certain how well he was picking up. The front two finished a good way clear of Dollar Bill in third although Coup De Grace finished much closer than usual to Nick Gifford’s charge. It is difficult to ascertain how string the form is but the initial impression is that there will be stronger contests to come at Sandown.

Aintree hosts the first ever pattern class juvenile fillies hurdle tomorrow. To be honest, I don’t really back this initiative. Overproduction is endemic within the breeding industry so I see no reason to strengthen it, the quality of these races never reflect the grade and it is this very concept which has kept Quevega away from Big Bucks thus negating the means of measuring the true abilities of mares. But it is still a juvenile race so I’ll step off my soapbox. For all intents and purposes, it’s a rerun of the Leicester fillies contest with a bunch of half decent flat performers thrown in. Those with experience are fairly difficult to split whilst the newcomers have all demonstrated reasonable level of form. Alan King’s L’Unique, however, would be the most interesting runner on the back of her Auteuil fourth.

That will have really taken its toll on some of those juveniles today. I’d look to oppose the principles next time out unless they are given plenty of time to recover.

L’Unique didn’t look at all bad today although what she beat exactly is open to question.

Tomorrow sees the return of leading Fred Winter contender Poetic Power provided he isn’t taken out on account of the ground! It doesn’t look like a particularly strong contest at this juncture. Bordoni easily boasts the best flat form in the field and both of trainer John Ferguson’s juveniles (Ruacana and Haymarket) have won this season. However, the gorund would be a major concern for this horse until he proves otherwise. Palus San Marco is another interesting newcomer from the flat and although not as classy as Bordoni, he should handle the ground. Dalmo is the only previous winner set to line up after beating the only other finisher at Newton Abbot in the summer. He makes has his first run for Dr Richard Newland. The other three horses with a chance, Poetic Power, In The Crowd and Arte Del Calcio are very tightly matched through Tidal Way.

If PP gets a mark that would qualify him for the Fred Winter then something’s gone badly wrong. We’re looking for a mark which qualifies him for a little 0-90 next summer at Stratford!

Poetic Power was still pulling even after he had been pulled up :( I assume that’s the last we’ll see of him until next spring? I hope he comes back a more mature creature as he certainly has plenty of scope.

At the other end of his field, Bordoni made a solid enough debut and with some more consistent jumping, he should make another decent member of the Bloomfields ranks. But it was In The Crowd who came out a convincing winner and paid a handsome compliment to Tidal Way’s win at Ludlow as well as providing his sire with another winner. Haafhd has now produced three individual juveniles this season, drawing him level with Jeremy.

Tomorrow’s race at Fontwell, should it pass the inspection, ought to be an informative spectacle. The admirably consistent Spanish Fork (who holds a win over Tidal Way), ex-Irish Mr Lando, handicap victress Annaluna and the tough Dovils Date all bring winning form to the contest. The last named would appear to be the strongest of the four of them although he gives Whipcrackaway seven pounds. Peter Hedger’s gelding is the highest rated juvenile without a win to his name so far this season although he looked certain to contest the finish before unshipping at the last and has good form over course and distance. Vexillum finally makes his hurdles debut after being entered several times over the summer when with Mick Channon. Harry Fry’s first ever juvenile is the only newcomer in the race but his flat form is decent in the context of this race. Chendiyr needs to improve on his debut run at Fakenham but Sarah Humphrey has indicated in subsequent interviews that he is thought much better than what he has shown.

And finally. For the benefit of the three or four people who read this thread, weather permitting, I will be going to Sarajevo tomorrow morning and will be there until the 29th. I will endeavour to keep this thread updated as and when is necessary but if for one reason or another, I am unable to, then at least you have my excuse in advance.

Mr Brennan lost his cool and pulled him up out of frustration as he couldn’t control him. He was a bit of a handful but he certainly should have finished.

In a bid to try and break his habit of pulling hard the plan is to run him frequently to try and take the fizz out of him. With that in mind he runs over a mile at Wolverhampton on Saturday. Hopefully the much faster pace will make it easier to settle him.

I hope the plan works and thank you. I always do have fun in Sarajevo. Right now, there is snow everywhere. My fiancee loathes the stuff but I think it’s really pretty what with it still being a novelty.

And indeed, I am connected to the internet so I can still catch those fifty pixel replays online and update this thread as and when (yippee).

Gowran Parks hosts a decent and competitive juvenile hurdle tomorrow. South South West is the pick of those with experience based on his reasonable defeat of Eveything Zain and subsequent run into third in the Grade Three Fairyhouse event won by Our Conor. Vedani jumped awfully on his debut behind Diakali so unless there is significant improvement in that department, the most potent danger comes from a newcomer. Dougal Philps represents the Mullins, Ricci, Walsh conglomerate but like last Thursday’s similarly connected newcomer, Fatcatinthehat, he may not be a stable leading light and could be vulnerable. Hartside didn’t achieve a great deal on the flat until a combination of a step up in trip and softer ground induced a handicap hat trick out of the ex-Carmody horse. Long spoken of as a potential hurdler, he fetched 55,000 guineas at the Horse’s In Training sale and now runs for Noel Meade and Gigginstown. Another sold at the same sale was Bayan who was knocked down for 14,000 guineas. Winless after seven starts for Brian Meehan, he was still a consistent performer in middle distance handicaps over the summer. Teofolina is a very rare hurdles runner for Jim Bolger and is the first ever for sire Teofilo. Pacelli Road represents Dermot Weld and JP McManus but his flat form is rather uninspiring and most hope is found in his pedigree.

Still can’t get over how exciting today’s contests are. With the possible exceptions of Hilali and Ruacana, I don’t see how two stronger fields could have been assembled at this stage of the season.

Still, the show continues tomorrow with a reasonable looking race at Musselburgh. Topweight Asteroid Belt returns after a month off and whilst he’s pretty much exposed, he’s still a fair measuring stick. Ruacana’s Catterick form has its first assessment tomorrow with the second and third facing off again. Totalize and Docs Legacy were squarely beaten by Ruacana but pulled 16 lengths clear of the remainder and have the strongest hurdles form on offer. The most likely looking newcomer is Ruacana’s stablemate, Modernism. Formerly with Mark Johnson, Modernism has the decent flat form typical of the Bloomfields recruits and whilst he was more potent on a firmer surface, the Musselburgh ground doesn’t look like it will be too testing at this juncture.

It did look for a very long way that Blades Lad would add to Haafhd’s list of winners this season and was a shade unfortunate to get nabbed on the line. He proved that he could battle though and should find a small race. As for Saturday’s action, it will be interesting to see what Timeform makes of those performances. Far West confirmed superiority over Handazan in no uncertain terms and while the Doncaster race was a more closely knit affair, it certainly didn’t want for strength in depth. Two races that do want for strength in depth are tomorrow’s contests at Plumpton and Ffos Las.

Plumpton seems to have defrosted sufficiently for a luke-warm looking four runner race. Lady Romanza and My Boy Ginger each come off placed runs on the sand albeit in claiming company and the out of form Maccabees has at least won on heavy ground (off a mark of 49). The Folkestone race which saw Sir Fredlot beaten 40 lengths is negligible from a form perspective and provided that run hasn’t bottomed him out, the son of Choisir shouldn’t have any problems getting off the mark at the third attempt.

Over in Wales a quarter of an hour later is effectively a two horse race. Fuzzy Logic has been beaten by 70 lengths in his past three starts whilst Kozmina Bay and King Of Wing also hold entries in Wednesday’s seller at Ludlow. Tim Vaughan’s Alborz seeks to add to his Uttoxeter win where he beat Donald McCain’s subsequent winner Right To Rule whilst Nick Williams’ unraced Rio De Sivola is a full brother to the not-bad Badoudal and rates as the former’s only credible opponent on paper.

Two juvenile races tomorrow. The opener at Newbury is typically intriguing for the course. Swnymor was a fairly high profile purchase for the Tim Vaughan team at the sales and being a son of Dylan Thomas, will have absolutely no issues with the ground. Amoralist is Nicky Henderson’s second three year old of the season and will bid to provide sire Tobougg with another decent juvenile.

The seller at Ludlow will not take much winning. Loyal Master has at least tasted success on the flat, is the least exposed of the protagonists in terms of hurdles form and should make a bold bid to provide Modigliani with his first ever winner over jumps.

The above is the latest Timeform top twenty and the top three Irish juveniles, Our Conor, Stocktons Wing and Blood Cotil all line up in tomorrow’s Grade 2 at Leopardstown. Jessica Harrington’s newcomer, One Fine Day, holds classy flat form, runs here instead of the maiden the following day and is presumably thought better of than the decent Hurricane Ridge. However, she will have to be very decent to win this on her debut. The field is completed by a quartet of above average juveniles.

Interesting one out tomorrow BH in Paul Nicholls’s

    Irish Saint

. As ever he’s one brought over from France where he won a listed hurdle at Auteuil. The form of that race has worked out diabolically but the horse has a truly enviable profile and clearly coming from a top yard can’t be sniffed at. He’s completely National Hunt bred which means he’s probably not one for the Triumph, but a very promising addition and one to follow to be sure. Any thoughts?

He won one division of a listed hurdle at 54/1 and you’re right about the form of that race being poor (the fourth later won a listed handicap off a low weight) but all he could do was win. And indeed, his sire hasn’t had a single runner in a Triumph, his only juvenile over here, Me Voici, was described as "too big to be a hurdler" and Irish Saint’s pedigree is inundated with chasers although he does have Bonbon Rose and Moss Quito (finished ahead of Jair Du Cochet in a hurdle) in there.

I think he’s very much an embryonic chaser and Nicholls already has Far West and Sametegal for the Triumph. Plus, I’m more inclined to believe Caid Du Berlais (entered at Newbury in a couple of days) will also make a better hurdler. Nevertheless, the trainer seems to like Irish Saint so there’s no reason why he can’t pick up a race or two over hurdles. Captain Cardington and McVicar (probably prefers a sounder surface) are fair yardsticks so we’ll know a lot more after today.
