including Ian Williams’s first juvenile this season…
I saw him schooling a few weeks ago and all I can say is I hope he’s improved since then
August 30, 2012 at 14:04 #411459Hilali was certainly impressive there. Didn’t put a foot wrong and hasn’t been touched in his last two races. The hold up tactics have brought about a vast improvement from his Ffos Las run and it will be interesting to see where he goes from here. He would be up with Halogen as this season’s juvenile as the lack of strength in the betting for his stablemate, Indepub, would suggest that Halogen would be the stronger of the two McCain juveniles seen out thus far.
Notwithstanding Chosirez’s disappointing effort, Miss Conduct’s performance would make her the best filly seen yet. Prior to this morning’s comment, I thought Cool Hand Luke would have been entitled to run into a place. His jumping on the day wasn’t, in the main, utterly horrific and whilst it wasn’t particularly good either, the presumed improvement must bode well for Poetic Power’s future over the sticks
August 30, 2012 at 14:15 #411461There’s a maiden juvenile at Killarney tomorrow which features the runners up from the first two Irish contests in this sphere along with Jessica Harrington’s first three year old hurdler.

I’m told that you can tell from the very first hurdling session whether a horse will take to hurdles or not. I think you can improve a horse’s jumping but you can’t turn a bad jumper into a good one.
One of the reasons I think this thread is particularly interesting is that I’m sure there is a genetic element to the ability to jump hurdles well and that’s why some of the flat sires produce more hurdle winners than others.
August 30, 2012 at 16:04 #411474I haven’t even been remotely involved in the schooling of a horse so this is an area that I lack knowledge. Be sure to let us know if Poetic Power takes flight with aplomb!
For me, it just started as a vague curiosity to find selling class horses distantly related to champions. But I must say I’m having fun doing the research. I’ve also been collecting the data on damsires. So far, the only damsire to have had more than one individual horse finished in a place has been Desert Prince with Hilali and Porterman. Still, I will be intrigued to see the figures come spring.
August 30, 2012 at 16:56 #411479This has been a most informative thread, thanks everyone for the research. Halogen and Hilali seem the stand-outs at the moment.
August 31, 2012 at 11:11 #411563It’s been a very pleasing thread to contribute to as it ensures that every race, no matter how mediocre, is one filled with intrigue. Tomorrow’s maiden at Market Rasen is no exception.
Will Adili transfer his improved flat form to the jumps? Will Red Tyke provide a second successive victory in this race for John Quinn? Will this season’s most unlucky juvenile, Snowed In, finally have a change in fortune? Will Mick Channon’s consistent Spanish Fork break his duck? Will Donald McCain’s £14,000 purchase be sharp enough for a winning debut? All will be revealed in roughly twenty seven and a half hours!

Altnaharra – Halling (1)September 4, 2012 at 11:56 #412007Tomorrow, there’s a handicap hurdle at Hereford open to 3yos and upwards. Choisirez is the only one to have taken up the engagement and was allotted a mark of 90 which I feel really stretches her as it is. When one takes into account the 9lbs she also has to find on the long handicap, she’ll do well to figure. Nevertheless, if she runs to her own form, it could give an indication of how good this crop is. I would have preferred if 5-day entry, King’s Wharf, had stayed in as he’s far more consistent but such is life!

Choisirez – Choisirez (3)September 5, 2012 at 11:00 #412088Tomorrow’s maiden at Sedgefield features nine hurdling debutants and five individual winners from the flat. Amongst the newcomers is the most accomplished flat horse to face hurdles so far this season in Mr Red Clubs who went from winning a nine furlong seller at Wolverhampton to picking up prize money in a listed contest at Newmarket over seven furlongs. The most interesting horse with a previous run over hurdles is Donald McCain’s Indepub who has the opportunity to boost Hilali’s Stratford form.
It also feature’s the frustrating homebred Josie Lennon. Frustrating in the sense that she’s the first horse for whom I’ve been unable to find a single hurdling relative. I suppose it had to happen at some point…

The newcomers weren’t any great shakes on the flat as there isn’t a winner amongst them although Nick Gifford’s first juvenile, Dollar Bill, did run respectably in a Sandown handicap for Andrew Balding.

Not only does it feature the two leading Irish juveniles seen thus far in Noel Meade’s Top Man Michael and Jessica Harrington’s Hurricane Ridge but the two McManus newcomers also look interesting as Mad For Road is Galileo’s first three year old and is out of a Pivotal mare (although on his flat form, that’s all he’s got going for him) and Stocktons Wing is a Jeremy (sire of Tuesday’s winner, Fisher) half brother to Paul Nicholls’ high class Desert Quest. The third, Stockton’s Wing, would be of interest next time out given natural improvement for a run as he only started to get the hang of the jumping after four out and flew after the last.
At Plumpton on Sunday, John Ferguson sends out his first Juvenile of the year in Haymarket, Khazium will attempt to improve on his second at Worcester where he was behind Third Half, stablemate of newcomer Juno The Muffinman, Bajan Hero will attempt to confirm Newton Abbot form with Ballyheigue and a half sister to Kawagino makes her hurdles bow…

Medeeba – Overbury (1)September 23, 2012 at 13:49 #414021That was a very taking performance from Juno The Muffinman who jumped very well throughout and provides a first jumps winner for sire Holy Roman Emperor. The late money would suggest that he’s thought better of than stablemate Third Half and he certainly had the right attitude for the job.
I was going to do a list of leading sires so far but it seems pretty pointless seeing as Haafhd is the only one with more than one individual winner so far. So instead, I’ll be dumping the list of three year olds we can expect to see over hurdles in the next few months. Obviously, this list will explode after the autumn sales and no doubt there are horses being scouted in France as I type this. Nevertheless, one would imagine that there should be around half a dozen of these who will make pattern company.
It reads name, trainer, sire, run-win-place, highest RPR, relative.

September 25, 2012 at 12:21 #414157Just looking at the RPRs awarded for the Plumpton race and they look around 10lbs out. They suggest Khazium ran 10lbs below form, that Juno The Muffinman is 11lbs inferior to Third Half and that Haymarket is on a par with Feb Thirtyfirst which I just can’t buy at all. Still, it’s all about opinions and so forth…
Anyways. Tomorrow, juvenile hurdling reaches Scotland for the first time this season and the Perth event looks very much like a straight shootout between previous winners Indepub and Third Half. Looking at the Chris Grant website, it would seem that Asteroid Belt can jump reasonably well but even on the ex Jim Bolger inmate’s best form, he will have to improve a fair bit to reach the leading contenders.

Altnaharra – Halling (1)September 27, 2012 at 10:55 #414311It’s another maiden contest at Stratford tomorrow and whilst neither of McCain’s entries were declared, it does feature an interesting newcomer in Tidal Way. Charlie Longsdon’s first juvenile of the season has the best flat form on offer in this field and is a half brother to a horse who picked up prize money in a Fred Winter. Granted, Indian Groom was by High Chaparral who’s proven with his juveniles but Red Clubs already has a winner from his first crop with Red Tyke so it will be interesting to see if his influence can carry him over the extended two miles. Of the horses who’ve already ran over hurdles, Annaluna and Spanish Fork stand out. The latter was slightly disappointing last time out but it’s worth remembering that Channon’s largely consistent inmate ran his best race at this course back in July.
