So yeah, the festivities are over, I’ve just about caught up with what I missed, my bumps and bruises are slowly but surely healing and my fiancee is still utterly livid at me for taking strangers home from the pub and starting a topless fight club. With that out of the way with, here are today’s pedigrees.
I spent today travelling down to Bristol as a launch pad for Chepstow. I thought I had an intro which took witful advantage of the connection afforded by the fact that Swnymor represents the first crop of Dylan Thomas who was scathingly critical of Welsh Nationalism… But I lost it by the M42

The Jonjo O’Neill/JP McManus/AP McCoy team are represented by Last Shadow who was the most expensive purchase at the autumn sales whilst Kim Bailey’s Milord was decent enough to contest last year’s German Derby. Nicky Henderson, Donald McCain and John Quinn are other top trainers fielding newcomers and are represented by Little Dutch Girl, Aazif and Calculated Risk, a half brother to Kings Quay, respectively. Nurse Dominatrix also makes her belated jumps debut having been skipping entries since the summer… not that she’s likely to threaten the major contenders.

The frustrating thing is that the Dylan Thomas/Sadler’s Wells cross is already looking like it may be as potent over hurdles as it is on the flat.
We’re hopeful that carting Stevie Donohoe round Wolverhampton on Sunday has taken the edge off him enough to enable Robbie McCarth (who rides him all the time at home) to have some chance of steering him.
After the race he’s off to Sarah Stretton to be re-trained as unless he can be taught to behave we really are wasting our time.

He jumped fine as usual and for a moment towards the end of the back straight, he did look like he was travelling with intent. If he ever settles then he does have the requisite breeding and ability to win races. However, am I to understand that he’s off to be an eventer now or will he get to continue his path of destruction through the juvenile ranks?

For those of us who cannot manage 14 pages can you give your current assessment of the Triumph Hurdle market. It strikes me as one of the most difficult of all the ante-post markets. I have no statistics but I assume it is rare for the the pre-Christmas favourite to go on to succeed at the Festival? To my eyes the current favourite looks extremely poor value.

Far West’s form looks very strong and it’s difficult to see on what basis you would want to oppose him at the moment. I think he will be very difficult to beat indeed.

For a start I don’t have any specialist knowledge which is why I asked the question.
Reasons I would have for opposing him:-
(1) The impression I have is that he will be found wanting on quicker ground.
(2) Don’t think the form as it stands is anything special.
(3) Following on from that there is still plenty of scope for something new to emerge.
(4) Nicholls has a tendency to crack on with his juveniles very early compared to other trainers – how many of these last the season. Hinterland was an obvious example from last year.January 11, 2013 at 22:56 #4260092012

Diamond Joshua 17th OctoberHi Stilvi and welcome to the thread. Even though I’ve made the most posts in this thread, I don’t really want consider it "my" thread. I encourage anybody with a thought on juvenile hurdlers to post.
To be honest, I don’t gamble anymore so I wouldn’t know how the ante post market looks. I’ve reposted the above list which should be useful. From the above, the Triumph winner is likely to be out by now although that isn’t essential. What is more pertinent is the fact that chasers don’t win the Triumph which is a category most of Nicholls’ juveniles can be thrown in. Lac Fontana has a similar profile to Zarkandar in that he represents the same connections and has yet to make his debut. Deia Sunrise is an interesting newcomer for Paul Webber at Kempton tomorrow as his flat form is as good as any juvenile’s, his sire Clodovil has already produced hurdlers and he will act on the better ground typical of the festival. Far West would have the strongest form seen in England so far but the ground is a massive concern so your concerns are understandable. Swnymor would be closest to Far West and Tim Vaughan thinks an awful lot of him but is another with ground issues. In Ireland, Blood Cotil and Our Conor lead the field over there. Blood Cotil is by the same sire as Champion Hurdler, Binocular, whose success came on good to soft whilst Our Conor’s sire Jeremy is one whose progeny are seen to better effect on softer ground.
If I form an actual opinion then I will share it on here but the truth is that at the moment, I’m not clued up on the market enough to be confident about anything.
Anyway, nice looking little contest at Kempton with Deia Sunrise taking on L’Unique (whose Aintree form was knocked slightly by the performance of Cockney Sparrow yesterday) and bumper horse Vibrato Valtat.

Dogora – Robin Des Pres (1)January 12, 2013 at 01:07 #426025Far West’s form looks very strong and it’s difficult to see on what basis you would want to oppose him at the moment. I think he will be very difficult to beat indeed.
Looks like he wants better ground and doesn’t look quick enough to me. I do personally think he’ll be a top class horse over further but I’m sure he needs more of a trip. I’ve been long awaiting the debut of Lac Fontana, who I’d possibly consider to be Nicholls’ most likely Triumph chance. Wouldn’t be surprised if we saw him first appear in the Adonis.

Interested in what you make of the Nicholl’s pair Caid Du Berlais and Saphir Du Berlais. I noticed Caid Du Berlais as he had more of a bumper pedigree being by a NH sire. At Chepstow it looked as if further and better ground would help his cause. Saphir Du Berlais disappointed on debut but then appeared pretty impressive from the last at Taunton although on both runs he didn’t get very high at the obstacles. They don’t look obvious candidates for the Festival juvenile races but perhaps they could get entries in the Neptune?
January 15, 2013 at 00:49 #426339I can’t say the temptation is really there. For one, I’d probably have to do this kind of research for a good five or ten years for my levels of understanding to warrant being tested and for another, money isn’t a motivating factor in my life as I get a great deal of pleasure from the simpler things… like compiling databases.
Caid Du Berlais certainly needs further as he was getting outpaced most of the way at Chepstow which is rather remarkable given the tempo of the race and the state of the ground that day. However, as far as I can see, the going doesn’t seem to be an issue on either breeding or form. Saphir Du Rheu jumped better at Taunton and won very cosily. The form of his Newbury race has been mixed so far with Vasco D’Ycy disappointing at Chepstow whilst Pistol won since over the course. That form will be tested later on at Lingfield provided the meeting goes ahead. They’re both longer term prospects in my eyes though I think if either horse will do something this season then Saphir Du Rheu would be the likelier of the two. Nevertheless, I can’t see either doing a great deal this March as, barring a very generous handicap mark, there are better prospects in each race.
