Hi Darren
I thought McVicar put in a solid display. He travelled and jumped well and showed his ability to handle testing conditions. In truth though the opposition didn’t make it much of a test for him.
Thanks for the good wishes re Poetic Power. My brother and I run the syndicate that owns him. He is very much a work in progress as he has been very keen and we are teaching him to settle. Paddy Brennan thought he settled much better on Sunday than on his debut but until he encounters fast ground he has no chance of staying 2m at the moment. That’s why we are just giving him three runs to get a handicap mark and then we will give him the winter off.
It can be very easy to forget what a shock it is for these three year olds to go from running on summer ground over 1m to 1m4f with 8 or 9 stone on their backs to running over 2m including jumping hurdles on bad ground with 11 or 12 stone on their backs. Only the toughest manage to handle that transition.

I can’t really expand on what Tuffers has said. He won as a 1/3 shot should do and demonstrated that he jumps well and goes on winter ground. I’d still have Handazan ahead of him but Mcvicar hasn’t done much wrong so far.

In 2010 and 2011, the first handicap took place at Musselburgh in the middle of February and last season, the Fred Winter was the first juvenile handicap of the season. I’d imagine that with milder weather, we might get one earlier.

What did you make of Dovils Date at Musselburgh? He looks a nice enough sort and came clear to win comfortably with a previous winner in second.
McCain’s juvenile bumper winner Vinstar should be worth looking out for if going hurdling next time. He won well at Carlisle last week.

November 12, 2012 at 13:02 #419714The entries have been made this morning for the first of Cheltenham’s Triumph Hurdle trials on Saturday. If they all stand their ground it should be a mouthwatering clash between the best juveniles seen out so far.

Hi Rob
I have to say that when I looked at the race beforehand, I didn’t think a great deal of the field so I don’t rate the bare form too highly. Furthermore, I felt his jumping left something to be desired although he should improve for the experience and may well be better suited by going left handed. Nevertheless, the way he quickened clear after the last was very likable and I imagine he’d have little problem defying a penalty in a similar contest. Rod Millman did have him earmarked as a hurdler and does suggest that he handles soft ground so he’s potentially smart. I somewhat doubt he’ll be quite up to Cheltenham standard but I could well be proven wrong as soon as Saturday.
I must admit that I’ve not given that much attention to the bumpers as one can’t really ascertain when these horses will see a hurdle. I do agree however that Vinstar looked promising under a penalty.

I should qualify my assessment by saying that Our Conor is the best
soft ground
jumper I’ve seen this season

It certainly looks like a potential cracker. Vasco Du Ronceray and Far West would be the ones I’m most looking forward to although Tom George apparently thinks a lot of Roc D’Apsis
November 13, 2012 at 15:54 #419770Tomorrow’s maiden at Bangor looks the strongest of its sort this season with Moidore and Counsel representing the Aintree form, highly rated Suraj attempting to improve on his Haydock debut and a nice looking newcomer in Take Two set to line up.

November 14, 2012 at 22:17 #419890Indeed it was a likable performance, particularly as he ran quite green throughout.
Tomorrow’s Ludlow contest centers around Bangor winner Tidal Way and Nicky Henderson’s second juvenile of the season in Amoralist. Waving could be of some interest on his breeding given his one good flat run whilst French flat winner Vasco D’Ycy is something of an unknown quantity whom connections will be hoping to fare better than stablemate Chendiyr.
