O’Leary said he would be leaving racing within 5 years in May 2019. So still two more years to go, and that’s if he sticks to the plan…

Has O’Leary apologised to the handicapper yet for calling him an idiot after giving Tiger Roll a handicap mark he ran to exactly yesterday?

Silly me, it would take a big man to do that.

On RTV, Nick Luck apologised at one point for a loss of sound which meant we could not hear Tom Stanley.

There was no need to apologise. ;-)

O’Leary wouldn’t recognise the handicapper if he walked in his bedroom and sat on his bed .. Sorry isn’t in his vocabulary , I have this nightmare that he wins the National this year , the bar steward owns one of my fav horses …Battleoverdoyen who’s entered , I don’t think I could manage the array of emotions if he won

“Didn’t know their names but it’s Mark and Charlotte who I was referring to regarding the cringe segments, just painful to watch. I’m sure they’re great people and would do a great job presenting at London Fashion week, but they aren’t for Cheltenham.”

I have zero interest in fashion but, if I did, I’d be as dismayed by this pair as racing fans are. They don’t even properly cover the fashion at meetings like Ascot & Goodwood where it’s arguably part of the experience. It’s all about them, and specifically, them finding places where they can find free booze. Portraying the image of racing that we all (including the police) agree is the problem these days. They literally add nothing, indeed they diminish the sport. If fashion is something ITV thinks is relevant to Cheltenham (and I suspect few would agree), get Chris Hughes or Cumani to cover it. At least they might bring the conversations round to the actual racing from time to time, and manage to engage politely with racegoers and stay reasonably sober.

Nobody will be tuning into Cheltenham for “fashion” coverage. I’m sceptical that many people do even for Royal Ascot, but accept it has a much higher profile there.

Nothing against Mark and Charlotte personally but, when there are so many presenters already, they really aren’t needed.

Doubt if Noel Le Mare was thrilled by the marks Red Rum got after 1974, but he still ran him three more times.

Bit disappointing the lack of any mention of Al Boum Photo in today’s Gold Cup.

It was only Chappers who said anything about him, and that was at the end of the Morning Line’s discussion on the race.

Too many times ITV racing talk about their favourite horses, who often flounder the hype is so much.

If it was Best Mate they would salivating over him.

At least that irritating Sky Bet “Move Over Football, Cheltenham coming through” advert will be disappearing from our screens in a few hours.

Dont know if I’m in the minority here but I’ve found the betting coverage disgusting this week. The stuff with the chap backing Flooring Porter yesterday, harping on about the big bets Tony Bloom had on Energermene and then today with Vauban. Yeah thats great when it works but in the intesrest of balance shouldnt you also report/discuss the many punters who’ve probably done their balls on the likes of Shishkin and Gaelic Warrior. This constant one sided beat the bookies stuff is ludicrous. The bookies will always beat 95% of punters and for me their narrative is irresponsible in this day and age and hypocritical when they will also happily preach about problem gambling.

You’re not the only one thinking that TTM.
Amount someone has on a horse does not mean they are a particularly astute punter at all.
In many cases just means they’ve either got plenty of money and / or some of them have a gambling problem.
Got no problem them showing some but also need to show the other side.

I just think its really poor. They’ll get a lot of new viewers during the festival and im thinking particularly of youngsters with disposable income who are probably the most at risk group and here they are saying the bookies are getting smashed etc making it seem like you can make a killing just lumping on the favs… its a shame a lot of the coverage particularly with Ruby is great but the betting side is car crash stuff

    Ghost said…

I wish that the people behind Spitting Image would create an opportunity to do a take on the ITV Racing team.

They would if they had enough Foam Latex for AP’s ego Ghost.

What pisses me off is this focus on gambling carries over to the pub. I was out drinking for Tuesday and Thursday and the amount of times I was asked, “Are ye winning?” was unreal. And they literally just wanted to know if I was up or down. Every other day of they year they people would ask, “What were ye on?” And you’d have a chat about how the race was run. For Cheltenham it’s just “Up or down?”

Then people started getting pissy when I said, “I’m enjoying my pints in the pub,” as though it was against the spirit of “Up or Down.”

They need to find more of the group of (typically) women in the crowd who are betting a fiver and just having a blast. Show people the bets are the icing on the cake not the cake itself.

    It’s the old argument, FiftyP.

Are racing and betting inextricably linked? Personally, I can enjoy a race without having a bet, but I appreciate that if there were no betting at all, there’d be no racing. 🤷‍♂️

I just find the betting ring sequence with Brian Gleeson all a bit cliched and boring.
