No reflection on Adele Mullennan but the updates from the pre-parade ring this week seem bit pointless.
June 18, 2021 at 22:00 #1546466Haven’t watched so much as a second of it all week – watched every race on various betting sites.
Had it on mute except when Holt was commentating – he’s got the least annoying voice!

June 18, 2021 at 22:49 #1546488Strange that somebody who has not watched a second of ITV racing all week decides to make a comment.
And when has Holt commentated?
June 18, 2021 at 23:11 #1546493I have not watched any of it either but that is because I’m in hospital and cannot get ITV4 on the TV in my room. So I have no idea who Lady Swinley is. Maybe I’ll find out tomorrow if it is on main channel.

I enjoy periodically reminding everyone that ITV Racing is not the be all and end all and there are other ways to watch the racing they cover.
If that’s annoying, feel free to ignore me – many do!
Holt has been commentating at the track at Ascot and thus for whatever racing channel (I don’t take any notice of ATR or RacingTV either tbh) the bookies were taking pictures from.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 19, 2021 at 00:06 #1546506I am also in the dark and have not the faintest of who Lady Swinley is either Purwell – my thoughts wander to imagine a ticketless lady with an abundantly large bottom forcing her way on to the course by her physicality alone, and cheered on by an appreciative crowd of thin folk, but the rawness of bottom rather referred to as; defined expressive posterior, by the wannabee upwardly mobile sharpees, in the Windsor enclosure. ” Oh raaather !”
On the other end of the spectrum, I have attended the surreal wake of a % of a man, and consequently missed the equine elegance and finery of Ascot, swapping it for long faces, peace of mind, and a % of large double whisky handed me from a % of a tray. Hope your tea is acceptably not too bad Purwell. Hospital tea has its coveted reputation for guaranteaing the losing leg of the placepot.
As Davies has constantly highlighted, the favoured mute button is more and more transcending its general purpose,in stilling the annoying higher volume advertisements for funeral cover and life insurance with a ‘free’ good looking pen, and slipping into mainstream usage. It’s hygge heaven for believers !
June 19, 2021 at 06:32 #1546521The dulcet tones of Simon Holt are definitely easier on the ears. Watching ITV all the week I could hear the voice of Ian Bartlett in the background, definitely something to avoid. Presumably he was sharing the duties with Holt.
Surprising more jockeys didn’t take more notice of Adele Mulrennan’s advice on Thursday to come down the centre of the course, on horse’s who prefer a bit of cut, as it was softer there
Must say I enjoyed Friday’s coverage, despite some of the personnel, as there was so much happening. It flew by.June 19, 2021 at 07:00 #1546523“The dulcet tones of Simon Holt are definitely easier on the ears.”
Well put IMO.
It’s a difficult one for me – Peter O’Sullevan in his prime (circa 1977) sets the benchmark for gravitas and a sense of theatre that none of them (all lightweights in comparison tbh) have come close to since.
That said, I hear mistakes from O’Sullevan in old YouTube clips I never noticed as a teenager so in many senses his commentary benchmark is a bit of a myth and definitely flawed.
Holt used to use expressions like “scooting clear” and “careering away” that grated with me, but I think he’s developed more authority with age.
If I go racing – the one place I cannot mute the commentator – it’s always a mild relief when he is calling the races.
The IMO absurdly pompous-sounding Bartlett makes me want to head for the exit after the first race!
Holt was unlucky not to get the ITV job.
It was a change for change’s sake though IMO Richard Hoiles was the best choice of they did feel compelled to make a change.

Not sure we need to hear about that.
June 19, 2021 at 09:21 #1546563I’m terribly sorry, I meant to type “mild” (now edited), but the f is next to the d on my keyboard and I mistyped.
What is a “milf” please?
I am not familiar with the word which does not appear in my copy of Thornycroft-Lombard de Smythe’s Ye Olde Classical Dictionary.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 19, 2021 at 09:42 #1546567In Oats – there could not be a clearer example of how wider the jam was spread then and how lucky connections would be to have a single Derby hope once in a while. This only 12 months on from Walwyn winning the Derby with Grundy, the yard was the first most turned to when opening up Horses In Training at the start of 1976, yet this would be the last ever time that Walwyn trained a horse even to reach the frame in the race.
June 19, 2021 at 09:44 #1546568Oops, this was meant for the thread with the 1976 Derby video on.
June 19, 2021 at 09:53 #1546569Wrong thread or not, I completely agree, Cancello.

Given that the horses are supposed to be the stars on show …how come except when a race is running they seem to get the least coverage?
good luck to allJune 19, 2021 at 13:21 #1546656Strange but I find there is something about Holts voice that I dislike.
Always think that he is going to be condescending (possibly not quite the right way to describe it, but I am no wordsmith) But I know he is not.
Each to there own.
June 19, 2021 at 13:43 #1546671I seem to be a bit different to most people who comment on here in as much as I quite enjoy sitting down and watching the ITV racing in the afternoon and the Opening Show.
I do though watch it 1/2 hour behind live tv as I like to fast forward through the adverts and those two pillocks who do the ‘life style’ segment as it is billed now.
Something that has annoyed me though is the often “well said xxx” congratulating comment said by usually Ollie Bell or Ed Chamberlin when somebody makes a statement, usually Matt Chapman.
