Like all the above (and more), it’s lost the magic because you first experienced it xx years ago. Everything you newly experienced as a teenager had more magic then than it has now. That’s nostalgia, the freshness of it at the time, and the exuberance of youth where everything was thrilling and exciting cos you hadn’t got tired or anything yet.

On RTV now, George Baker mentioned that Red Rum won the Scottish Grand National in 1974. To which a surprised Tom Stanley replied “You learn something new every day”.
Yes, because why should a professional racing presenter know that the most famous racehorse of modern times won the Scottish Grand National?
Sad but not surprising he didn’t know that – Rummy still the only horse to do it in the same season, when Aintree was still the fearsome and greatest jumping test of all.
He carried 12st at Aintree (beating the former dual Gold Cup winner L’Escargot, who went on to win the race in 1975 as a 12 yr old!) and just 3 weeks later Rummy carried 11st 13lbs at Ayr when he beat Proud Tarquin 4L giving him 20lbs – Proud Tarquin went on to past the post 1st in the Whitbread a week later where he beat that year’s Gold Cup runner up The Dikler, who was trying to give him 24lbs.
Given that Ginger had a plan under consideration which would see Rummy run in the Scottish NAtional, the Whitbread and the Grand Steeplechase de Paris, you do have to wonder whether any consideration was ever given to a tilt at the Gold Cup (given that he was also runner up in the Hennessy after winning his first National).
At least Stanley is not quite as bad as Anthony Dunkley, who once said he had never heard of Night Nurse – only the best hurdler ever on Timeform ratings.
Nick Luck’s enthusiasm for Sam Quek’s appointment and fury with anyone who questioned it is a little easier to understand given they have worked together before.

Shame ITV look like only covering 1 race from Plumptons Premier Raceday next Monday, choosing to focus on mediocre fare on the AW at Kempton. If only Plumpton was a Jockey Club track. Can’t see them putting much effort into AW Finals day this Friday either.
Did Ch 4 racing ever go to Plumpton? Or Kelso?? ( it seems they did show the Sussex National; not sure if that was every year or just once though).
I believe ITV have introduced more varied courses but on Monday I would rather be seeing racing from Plumpton instead of some AW dross from Kempton.
The more I know the less I understand.
Plumpton has an arrangement with Sky so ITV probably had to work hard to get anything at all.
