Or like test cricket.
Or like Formula 1.
Or drinking alcohol.
Or having a night out.
Or having a crush on someone.
Or the pleasures of the flesh!
Like all the above (and more), it’s lost the magic because you first experienced it xx years ago. Everything you newly experienced as a teenager had more magic then than it has now. That’s nostalgia, the freshness of it at the time, and the exuberance of youth where everything was thrilling and exciting cos you hadn’t got tired or anything yet.
April 7, 2025 at 03:27 #1726545“Griff I think the Newcastle United league cup win is a prime example of football being a social event …”
Was there some sort of social event HDLG?
YNWA :)
April 9, 2025 at 19:36 #1726788On RTV now, George Baker mentioned that Red Rum won the Scottish Grand National in 1974. To which a surprised Tom Stanley replied “You learn something new every day”.
Yes, because why should a professional racing presenter know that the most famous racehorse of modern times won the Scottish Grand National?
April 9, 2025 at 23:34 #1726813Sad but not surprising he didn’t know that – Rummy still the only horse to do it in the same season, when Aintree was still the fearsome and greatest jumping test of all.
He carried 12st at Aintree (beating the former dual Gold Cup winner L’Escargot, who went on to win the race in 1975 as a 12 yr old!) and just 3 weeks later Rummy carried 11st 13lbs at Ayr when he beat Proud Tarquin 4L giving him 20lbs – Proud Tarquin went on to past the post 1st in the Whitbread a week later where he beat that year’s Gold Cup runner up The Dikler, who was trying to give him 24lbs.
Given that Ginger had a plan under consideration which would see Rummy run in the Scottish NAtional, the Whitbread and the Grand Steeplechase de Paris, you do have to wonder whether any consideration was ever given to a tilt at the Gold Cup (given that he was also runner up in the Hennessy after winning his first National).
April 10, 2025 at 06:21 #1726816At least Stanley is not quite as bad as Anthony Dunkley, who once said he had never heard of Night Nurse – only the best hurdler ever on Timeform ratings.
April 10, 2025 at 07:23 #1726820Nick Luck’s enthusiasm for Sam Quek’s appointment and fury with anyone who questioned it is a little easier to understand given they have worked together before.
The media – one cosy little club.
April 10, 2025 at 08:54 #1726822Chris Hughes is on big brother. He is such a cool dude with maybe a tiny percentage of marbles missing
Who knows it may attract the sort of people racing are trying to attract to the sport, those with a high percentage of marbles missing.
I watch it btw …

April 10, 2025 at 13:49 #1726842“It’s Liverpool so imagine there a roaring trade in coke this week to … and I’m not talking about the kind you put in with your rum or vodka”.
How dare you? We are proper sophisticated. We have even got an Ivy restaurant now.
Although Hooters is just around the corner from it.
April 10, 2025 at 14:33 #1726844Objectiveness goes out the window at times. Matt Chapman does it sometimes with jockeys, trainers and owners who give him lots of interviews.
ITV could do worse than employ Meghan, on the left of Nick Luck in the picture. A decent presenter and better than any female they currently employ. In fact that probably applies to males as well
April 15, 2025 at 19:57 #1727343Shame ITV look like only covering 1 race from Plumptons Premier Raceday next Monday, choosing to focus on mediocre fare on the AW at Kempton. If only Plumpton was a Jockey Club track. Can’t see them putting much effort into AW Finals day this Friday either.
April 15, 2025 at 20:47 #1727344Did Ch 4 racing ever go to Plumpton? Or Kelso?? ( it seems they did show the Sussex National; not sure if that was every year or just once though).
April 15, 2025 at 21:13 #1727345I believe ITV have introduced more varied courses but on Monday I would rather be seeing racing from Plumpton instead of some AW dross from Kempton.
The more I know the less I understand.
April 15, 2025 at 23:47 #1727351Plumpton has an arrangement with Sky so ITV probably had to work hard to get anything at all.
April 16, 2025 at 05:23 #1727359CAS , where exactly is the hooters ? … Erm I’m asking for a friend…

April 16, 2025 at 06:47 #1727361Water Street, just up the road from the Liver Building itself.
The garish orange signs are unmissable. The council has ordered them to be removed given it is a conservation area of outstanding architectural interest but the franchise owner has refused.
April 22, 2025 at 20:01 #1728020No wonder ITV only showed one of the valuable races from Plumpton yesterday, Simon Holt would be a step too far for the show.
April 22, 2025 at 23:22 #1728032I like Richard Hoiles, but it was good to hear Simon Holt on terrestrial TV again. I’ve always felt he was an undeserving casualty of ITV wanting to give their programme a distinct identity from its predecessor.
