Ed’s attempt at pronouncing Bucephalus this week was something to savour. Booker Failus being his preferred version after some conjecture.

Ed got the double up, he followed up Booker Failus with Kyle of LochLAsh. Maybe it had something to do with them both being away meetings.
Is there a reason Cesca never pronounces the G in Summerghand? It’s been going on over 7 years now.

It sounds like Tom Stanley has never heard of Henri Matisse, given the way he pronounced the great artist’s name. At least Gary O’Brien got it right.

I think Stanley also referred to Camilla Pissarro.

Yes, I thought he said Camilla as well! He pronounced it correctly after the race. Maybe Nevison put him right (I saw him in the Tate once).

When Cesca was going through the runners and riders, only one jockey in the first at Goodwood didn’t get a namecheck from her – Alex Voikhanski. Trainer Hannon got the nod instead. A similar thing happened in a race at York, Alex Jary & Raul Da Silva were the omitted riders.
Surely they weren’t too tricky for multi-lingual Cesca and it was just a coincidence?

Don’t get me started on pronunciation, yeats. After my one-man crusade to get “Chaldean” pronounced correctly, I think my next venture will be to bombard the racing channels with emails regarding their abysmal efforts to pronounce French and Irish names.

Given how many of the leading racehorses, especially over jumps, originate from those countries, one would expect the presenters and commentators could carry out a little research.

Ark at ee, as one of my Bristolian neighbours would say, Glad’.

Do Irish and French commentators bother to pronounce British names exactly how the British would?

And if so, in what accent?

If a Scottish Glaswegian named his horse “Murder”, should we all really need to pronounce it like a Glaswegian?

What about a Bristolian owner calling his horse “Cheers Drive” do we all really need to pronounce it like a Bristolian?

    Where should it end?

My Turkish father-in-law (well he would be if my gf and I were married) struggles to pronounce certain Brittish letters, should I put him right every time?

imo All that matters is that we can identify the horse with the name. Without the need to get it spot on how the Irish or French would say it.

If identification is all that matters, Ginge, they might as well just use the numbers.

“All that matters” as in, as long as we can identify the horse by the name used.
If in Ireland or France they didn’t pronounce an English name exactly as we would, wouldn’t bother me.
If in England we don’t get an Irish or French name exactly as an Irish or Frenchman would say it, does it really matter?

    Yes, it does.

It isn’t particularly obscure to know that the H in the French name Henri is silent and the word is not pronounced as Henry.

The majority of British sports commentators are notorious for poor pronunciation, especially the football commentators. A lot of foreign footballers names are mangled horribly; De Bruyne, Fernandes and Joshua Kimmich for instance.

The Scottish football commentator, Derek Rae of ESPN, and FIFA video games, makes a point of getting it right – and explains that foreign players aren’t English, so using English pronunciation is completely wrong. Eurosport’s cycling commentator, Rob Hatch is similar….both get criticism from the ignorant.

Some of the pronunciation does make you think the presenters are a bit ignorant but at the end of the day I’m watching Ssr or Rtv, not the south bank show.

It’s hardly worth getting your knickers in a twist over.

I expect people on racing channels and programmes to pronounce horses’ names correctly, it’s not hard. If you don’t know, look it up. It’s basic journalistic standards and as Andy says these are lacking across many sports with a few notable exceptions. Also a case of respect to the participants in my opinion.
