It’s an underwhelming field and opens a big debate being had at the moment, but it’s hardly terribly disappointing. I can’t wait for it, it’s a very intriguing and exciting clash.
I’ve been predicting Magical is going elsewhere, (maybe even to the Nassau which she’s not won makes more sense to me) for a little while on this thread.
I believe them to rate Japan very highly and I still think he’ll go off 5/2 second fav. For that reason, I’ve convinced myself to go in again as we can still get 6s.
AVD will be (unless Chris Stickles ruins it again), running on his favoured ground, which he has not done at Ascot. I’d give him a chance as I would Sovereign on the off chance something stupid happens. He’s been punted today presumably based on that.
Got to take on Enable really, odds on and 6 years old. No horse has won this at that age since 1998. None have the CV of Enable to be fair, but still a lot of horses have retired by now because they are past their peak.
I think Japan is a cracking price to improve past her this season
July 21, 2020 at 16:11 #1494599I see all the obrein horses are also entered in the tattersals gold Cup on Sunday
I would think they would want to guarantee a group 1 win at 4 for Japan as it reads well on a stallions CV and the reason he is twice the price of magical is he might be running there
Real tough one for me to figure out what will run so no bet until final decs
July 21, 2020 at 18:05 #1494604“It’s possible Magical could wait for the Tattersalls Gold Cup on Sunday, but not definite. Everything is up in the air at the moment and we will make plans for everything on Wednesday, including what jockeys we might use at Ascot on Saturday. All the horses will do their last main piece of work on Wednesday morning.”
July 21, 2020 at 20:04 #1494623I had this at the end of my post and it disappeared
Japan 6/1 main bet
AVD 16/1
Sovereign 25/1July 21, 2020 at 20:07 #1494624Sovereign has been punted into as short as 11s today, big move.
I saw that re Magical, not surprised at all. AOB said 2/3 weeks ago the plan all along was to run Japan over 10F then step him up to 12F.
Made sense and this is a big pointer towards the confidence in Japan.
July 21, 2020 at 22:59 #1494634If Magical does miss the race then Coolmore will never of had a filly to even run in the race before. A good stat when you think about it.
July 22, 2020 at 06:12 #1494643Massive Magical fan but have sneaking suspicion she might not run so have backed Japan for this and Telecaster (York Stakes) in a E/W double.
July 22, 2020 at 09:36 #1494650The trip will obviously suit Japan + the fact he hasn’t a proper G1 does give him the angle to go here. But purely on risk purposes i’m fairly surprised they wouldn’t do it the other way.
To be honest, i don’t think either will beat Enable anyway.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!July 22, 2020 at 12:55 #1494656It gets harder with each passing season to get excited about this race.
I would like to see Enable win, but I will have a small ante post bet on Sovereign at 14-1.
July 22, 2020 at 13:18 #1494663He’s part owned by a Japanese guy now Jack, which is why. They love their staying races and he’s being targeted at the Arc, so it all makes sense.
It is a slight reservation what you mention. We can pick holes in that Juddmonte form all day. Price wise though, it’s a no brainer. He’s the only horse that can beat Enable if Magical doesn’t run or unless they do “A Serpentine!” with Sovereign.
He might just not be good enough, if Enable is fully on song. He has to improve on what he’s done, but they do rate him and it does make sense from a form perspective in terms of getting him fit etc and he’s a CD winner.
Enable would have retired last season had she won the Arc, so this season is an afterthought and there must be some reservations based on that and at 6.
If she goes and wins well, then fair play to her, but 6/1 on Japan is a great bet. He will go off 5/2 on Saturday if Magical gets scratched tomorrow
July 22, 2020 at 13:39 #1494672See i couldn’t have him on my mind at 5/2 vs Enable. The run at Sandown will be used as a potential angle for Japan supporters, and i can sort’ve see that, but he’d need to be a good point bigger for me to even consider him. But then again, i’m finding myself, especially this season betting in the big Saturday races much less. Was actually thinking the other day how little i back O’Brien horses these days as well. Not sure why it is, given the fact 90% of my betting is on Irish racing!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!July 22, 2020 at 13:42 #1494675I’ve backed Japan 5-1 ew antepost for this so hoping for a run.
Enable a cert if he’s missing.
July 22, 2020 at 14:46 #1494681Magical out to 14.0 on betfair. Unlikey to run?
July 22, 2020 at 14:46 #1494682Magical out to 14.0 on betfair. Unlikey to run it seems.
July 22, 2020 at 19:43 #1494706Japan in the king George and magical going to the curragh. O’Brien said that is the thinking at the moment but things could change in the morning. Racing Post.
July 22, 2020 at 19:54 #1494709Looks like a 4 horse field. Enable, Japan, Antony van Dyke and Sovereign.
July 22, 2020 at 20:40 #1494712What about Fanny ?
