When Rhododendron won her maiden last year at goodwood my initial reaction was “she looks like a miler” she showed such brilliant speed that day.

It may well be that they are conditioning her to stay much further as all she did in the guineas was stay on, however the price has gone now for me and she is rank bad value at the current odds. I’ll be happy to take her on, probably with enable although will have a look around for something else.

Alluringly would also have a poke as Enable got first run on her at chester, and Alluringly is 16-1 while enable is about 7-2

A bad antepost race for me with Shutter Speed gone and Gracious Diana showing nothing.

No value in the favourite at all for me.

Question for anyone who can help me.. can you pay on the day Friday if anyone knows? I went last year for the oaks but I’d sorted it out in advance. Lonsdale enclosure.

You should be able to pay on the day

Just added a double, 7-2 Enable and 4-1 Cracksman to add to my inital Eminent for the derby bet.

50 on the nose pays over a grand :good:

With Winter dotting up today, Rhododendron has been cut. Paddy Power go Evens but she is generally 5/4 and you can get some 11/8 with some of the proper firms.

I would rather take 11/8 than go against her with inferior horses but I have 2/1 anyway so it’s not an issue for me.

Hopefully Ryan Moore can put the race to bed and coast her home in the final furlong.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Yes the form is there but still the issue of whether or not she gets home remains.

    I have my doubts.

    Nice one

I may buy a ticket tonight or tomorrow but it’s nice to know I can get one on the day if necessary.

    Cheers bud

I think this race could provide a big price winner!!

I think the fav will not get the trip and the second fav beat trees at Chester!!

Coronet will stay but at what pace HORSEPLAY is the one for me at 12/1.she looks like a thorough stayer and will like the trip IMO
The other two that I think deserve a mention are SOBETSU at 14/1 which absolutely hacked up at Deauville and certainly should uphold the form with Coronet and VINTAGE FOLLY at 50/1 which is a big price for all the Shutter Speed fans!!

I was just about to say something similar.

I too don’t think the favourite stays. And I don’t think she’s anywhere near the class of Minding who had the same doubts going into the race as Rhododendrun.

    Enable beat nothing at Chester.

Sobetsu needs rain and, according to the weather forecast its right sunshine Wednesday and Thursday before 22 degrees Friday. She won’t run if it’s firm.

Horseplay I considered today when making my final choice. However, the one I like most is Coronet. Beaten bun sobetsu on soft ground, she will relish the stiff finish in my view and is a nice price.

I was already burned antepost with shutter speed plus my tiny play on Gracious diana but I really quite like the look of Coronet now we know who is running and where.

I was on Architecture last year antepost at a huge price. She was my one and only antepost bet and for about 15 seconds of the race, I was at the track cheering her with genuine belief that Minding had been boxed and Dettori had gone for home. Of course we know that Mindings class got her out of jail.

I just do not believe that rhododendrun is classy enough to warrant 11/8 favourite when she might not even stay!

    Coronet 8/1

Actually Rhododedron reminds me more of Alexandrova than Minding. I was convinced Alexandrova would get stuffed in her oaks and laid her accordingly and she hosed up. Let’s hope I have more luck this time.

Don’t agree that Enable beat “nothing” at chester which everyone seems to be saying. She’s certain to stay and from a sire who’s stock should improve with age. She travelled noticeably well and kicked off the turn and beat a strongly fancied filly who was going for a hattrick of wins for O’Brien in the race. Don’t agree she beat “nothing”.

I was on her at Chester but more so because I thought that the O Brien horse that day was a maiden winner only. To be fair to Enable, she wasn’t far behind Shutter Speed who i think would hose up in this Oaks. I suppose on that evidence, Enable has a chance in what is likely to be a weak renewal like last year.

It looks a group 2. But yet I’m really quite excited for it. An open race with lots of them having chances to become superstars when stepped up in trip. Coronet, Horseplay, Rhododendrun, Enable and Subetsu. Any of those could be of a high class. At the moment, they don’t look like Oaks winners in a normal year. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of the race follows up in a big race later in the year – perhaps against the Colts.

I too don’t think Rhododendron will stay, just like her cousin Cracksman. Any horse with Pivotal in their pedigree will not stay 12f in my opinion. Coronet’s breeding flagged her up as an interesting contender for this to me weeks ago, but her reappearance was so disappointing I decided I would leave her alone. But now that it’s so close to the race and nobody bar Rhododendron has stamped any sort of authority on affairs, I think I might have to take the 8/1 on offer.

    Was it that dissappointing?

Last to 3rd running on at the finish. On softer ground than she’d like.

The Epsom hill will help her I think

Agree with Middle_of_March and also think Rhododendron will have no trouble staying the trip. She was doing all her best work at the finish of the 1000 Guineas uphill at Newmarket after being held up by Ryan Moore and her stamina is assured.

Let’s not forget the talented (but naughty) Sariska (Pivotal) who after winning the Musidora in 2009 went on to take the Oaks and the Irish Oaks.
She had a colt by Frankel in 2015 and he holds an entry for the 2018 Derby. :)

I think MoM was in fact talking about Coronet, but you’ve proved me wrong Tryptych , I had completely forgotten about Sariska. However I think she should be treated as the exception rather than the rule, in what was a weak Oaks anyway.

And yes MoM, perhaps I found it so disappointing purely because I had such high expectations for her, in hindsight it has left her open to a lot of improvement. I just wonder does she have the cruising speed to get her into contention at Epsom.

I was referring to Coronet who was a running on 3rd last time.

She will be finishing like a train.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more I actually really like her.

It’s funny because I had not even contemplated Shutter Speed being beaten if she turns up. She obviously heads elsewhere and I was struggling to study the race. I had completely missed Coronets run two weeks ago when she flew home from last and, with the hill to help her, she may well be a cracking price at 8s.

@Voleur..Yes sorry Voleur and MOM got that all wrong my mistake and yes Sariska could be an exception to the rule there will always be one or two but no reason why Rhododendron shouldn’t be one of them, we will find out on Friday. Would love to see her win though having seen her in the flesh at Newmarket, in the paddock she was really impressive along with Winter they both took the eye.
Winter franked the form today and there can’t be many who could get that close to her.
Good luck it’s going to be a great weekend of racing ahead..Jac :)

Just watched Enables run again. She did it well but it was only a 2 horse race. Gosden must think well of her to send shutter speed to France so will take the 5s now.

Rhododendron too short. Might get 6/4 on the day and will wait for that as a saver
