What’s the % of people under about 80 that this bug is any real danger to? About 1% or thereabouts I think.
Lots of people are getting very pissed off with unneeded restrictions imposed on them. Even a Tory rag said that Boris is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
September 10, 2020 at 22:35 #1500686As Corky says above, utterly farcical that this useless government keeps swinging a wrecking ball at the economy for no good reason as a knee jerk panic reaction. Must be seen to be “doing something” I suppose.
France has been allowing crowds of up to 5,000 on racecourses since early July and 11,500 a day are going to be be let into the Open tennis.
And here we are farting around timidly with pusillanimous experiments to let a few people attend which are then pulled at the last minute.
No wonder my French friends are baffled and bemused by our utterly pathetic way of responding to this thing.
The average age of those dying possibly as a result of Covid is 84. Of all deaths thought to be Covid related 88% are aged 65 plus. Of course all deaths are a matter of regret but where has the perspective, sense of proportion and rational analysis gone ? The hysterical concentration on Covid to the exclusion of everything else is causing more damage than the disease itself.
The stupid petty fogging restrictions will have a minimal if any effect on preventing this thing from spreading. It has gone all around the world from a single case in China (apparently). Our pathetic attempts to control it are akin to sticking a finger into the dyke. It is not going away and cannot be beaten unless a fully effective vaccine is found. As soon as any unlocking is tried it will be there lurking and ready to kick off again.
How much more damage will be done including a surge in non Covid deaths before the government and its advisers get the point.
There is nothing better that can be done than shielding the vulnerable. Everyone else needs to get on with their lives while taking sensible precautions.
September 10, 2020 at 22:51 #1500688Do you think certain parts of the media got hold of this, turned it into something bigger than it should be, and the govt have been forced to react, or be seen to.
September 10, 2020 at 22:57 #1500692Yes it is indeed all reaction but the job of a good government is to lead and not blindly follow. Too much attention to focus groups and sound bites. Boris might be good at winning elections but he is proving a hopeless leader
September 10, 2020 at 22:59 #1500693Good post Devonian, and as you mentioned, good stuff from Cork All Star too.
I’m utterly bemused at what is happening. As I mentioned on the other thread (which was already active on this topic, not quite sure why we needed yet another one), there are hundreds of people being allowed into racecourses for car boot sales, but people aren’t allowed in for the racing.
It’s a shitshow, pure and simple.
Tank, if I see one more headline about a spike I think I’m going to start that Riot.

I’m baffled and bemused about their stupidity. 10,000 new cases in the last 24 hours……… Nothing learned, absolutely nothing. And this doesn’t help the rest of Europe either when we’re talking competitions, tournaments and so on with spectators.
Let’s see how many people will be attending French sporting events in the next 4-6 weeks.September 10, 2020 at 23:02 #1500697What is the other thread where this topic is aired please ?
September 10, 2020 at 23:05 #1500698Devonian, “Should Cheltenham be taking place”, it’s half a dozen threads down from this one.
September 10, 2020 at 23:10 #1500700Number of infections is less important than the number of deaths and hospitalisations.

That’s over a half a million then in this country alone. Worldwide 60+ million?
September 11, 2020 at 13:35 #1500795A lot of under 80’s will have issues that they are unaware of that will get hit for 6 if catching this virus, yes their immune system is strong enough to fight it off but damage can still be done even those that are young, fit and well can suffer long term problems.

That’s not the full story though. Many of those had other health problems and were half way out of the exit door anyway. Some died with Covid but not because of it but were marked down as a Covid death.
Anyway, not worth arguing the toss. This bug has clearly divided people into two very distinct camps – those who seem to believe it is a threat to all – and people like me who have no worries(and I’m no youngster) about it and wonder why the vast % of the population have to follow such ridiculous draconian rules for **** all.
September 11, 2020 at 16:35 #1500870Truth is mankind will probably kill each other in fights and global conflicts arguing about it.
September 12, 2020 at 10:14 #1500959Newton Abbot racecourse are able to host Food Fair yet not able to host even a limited crowd for racing.
September 13, 2020 at 15:11 #1501388Lots of people are lining the rails outside the Curragh today. Not looking like there is any social distancing either. They may as well be inside.
September 13, 2020 at 17:45 #1501444Also very tiresome to see so many masked trainers and jockeys at the Curragh continually touching and fiddling with their masks. Dermot Weld must have adjusted his mask about ten times! It shows how useless these poorly fitting pieces of cloth are.
September 14, 2020 at 00:15 #1501478Newmarket have been given ok by Suffolk Health to host a crowd of 1000 Members a day for the Cambridgeshire Meeting.
