Starmer wouldn’t be able to criticise him if he did cancel any elections. Not that Trump gives a toss what Starmer “thinks” about anything anyway.
January 20, 2026 at 13:08 #1751114Saw an list of the councils that are looking to deny local voters their rights.
It consists of 27 local authorities …
21 Labour, 4 Conservative, 1 Lib Dem and 1 no overall control.
However the reason for today’s posting is about Starmer taking the knee & bowing to China and approving the huge embassy complex. No surprise to me after COMMRADE Starmer’s government handed over the Chagos Islands to China ally Mauritius, caused the collapse of the Chinese spy trial. Is there nothing this government won’t do to please their Chinese masters?
good luck to allJanuary 20, 2026 at 13:27 #1751115The approval of the new Chinese embassy, has been deemed ok by MI5. Interestingly, the UK government is building a new embassy in Beijing in the next year or two.
January 20, 2026 at 15:37 #1751134This is the latest from “MI5”:
“Britain’s spy chiefs have warned that they cannot “wholly eliminate” the national security risks around China’s new London embassy after Labour granted permission for it to go ahead.
In a joint letter, the heads of MI5 and GCHQ warned that it was “not realistic to expect to be able wholly to eliminate each and every potential risk” associated with the development, on the former Royal Mint site in east London.
Sir Ken McCallum, the MI5 director-general, and Anne Keast-Butler, the GCHQ director, added that even if this were a practicable goal “it would be irrational to drive ‘embassy-generated risk’ down to zero” given the “numerous other” national security risks the country faces at present.
At the same time, they noted that China currently operated seven diplomatically-accredited sites across London and that “consolidating” this presence in one major diplomatic hub “brings clear security advantages”.
The letter was addressed to the Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary. It followed the announcement by Steve Reed, the Housing Secretary, that Beijing’s application to build on the historic site, close to sensitive financial cables, had been approved, risking further criticism from Donald Trump.
The approval Critics claimed that the embassy – which would be China’s largest diplomatic site in Europe – would become a “spy hub” in the heart of the capital.”
January 20, 2026 at 17:34 #1751139I wouldn’t worry about China, they probably have the same reservations about us given our history with them.
Personally, I dont see them invading us anytime, they may try the revenge tactic of flooding the economy with opium (joke).
Are the following countries treated the same way? Saudi (known for secret flights out of the UK with dissidents) UAE Crown Prince the Godolphin owner, treatment of his extended family. USA, a CIA agent drives on the wrong side of the road in England, kills a motorcycle rider. Then spirited out of the UK in hours. So if we just want nice friendly countries to have embassy’s, where do we start?
If you good folks like a good historical read, try the book For All The Tea in China, Brits at their best. Cunning and brilliant, how a tall Scot’s man managed to disguise himself as a local and steal tea plants.

Another good example of the how much the “special relationship” matters to the Land of the Free..
January 20, 2026 at 18:10 #1751142Spot on Landafar.
Does make me laugh when people start the pearl clutching about Chinese spying. The vast majority of the country right from us posting here to the Government itself is using a device made there.
As has been said, they’re coming to take over the world weather anyone likes it or not so get used to it.
On council elections, without commenting on the merits of postponing them, turnout is invariably abysmal. People are voluntarily disenfranchising themselves. Fact is most people don’t care. If you walked up to 10 people in the street and asked them to name a single one of their local representatives, I’d be surprised if more than two could manage it
January 20, 2026 at 20:02 #1751160I wonder when people will realise that we have NEVER had a special relationship with the USA. They did not help us with machinery when we were in trouble. Instead we had a lease lend agreement that we were still paying off in the mid 2000’s. They only joined WW2 when Japan attacked Honolulu.
In my lifetime the USA have never supported us (Suez crisis) and at best been neutral (the Falklands). But they expect us to join their wars, including Iraq based on imaginary weapons of mass destruction. Only one of our Prime Ministers, Harold Wilson, had the sense to stop our soldiers being slaughtered. He refused to join the war in Vietnam.
Now the USA is threatening to take another country by force. Even the UK is about to have tariffs increased to 35$ (10% + 25%) if we don’t agree to the USA taking Greenland. Some special relationship, ha ha! There are clearly some who have fallen for USA propaganda hook line and sinker. The only way to deal with Trump is the Mark Carney way – take him on head on.
By contrast China has never seriously attacked any other country in my lifetime. They are deemed ‘bad guys’ by the USA for no reason whatsoever. We should embrace China for the sake of the free world and certainly allowing them an embassy is a step in the right direction. Anyone who has visited China will know they are more advanced than the USA.
January 21, 2026 at 05:25 #1751176People in the know are saying China is THE superpower now , Trump tirade even for him yesterday was that of a man on the edge of rationality , it’s going to beach interesting week , the markets are edgy , if he does go to far then they’ll be the ones to ramp him back in

Spot on, value31.
The so-called “special relationship” was merely one of linguistic convenience: in the age before English, via film, television and (more recently) the internet, became the global lingua franca, the UK and US representatives at international meetings could converse without the need for translators.
January 21, 2026 at 14:17 #1751190I’ve listened to 20 mins of his speech , Trump even for him really has lost the plot , surely America can see this

January 21, 2026 at 15:03 #1751194You underestimate how stupid people really are, sadly.
January 21, 2026 at 15:25 #1751195I know Glad but there’s no way he’s getting Greenland , he’s now said he won’t use force so how does he save face

January 21, 2026 at 16:41 #1751197A proportion of them know all about his mental instability, long line of business failures and disgusting behaviour but just don’t care. He hates the same people they hate and makes it ok for them to say so. Trump is a cult (sic). He is quite clearly a figurehead, there’s no way he’s actually in a fit state to run a country.
Americans have long been susceptible to them in various forms. They flourish more over there than they do here. Sadly it’s rapidly extending to our politics.
January 22, 2026 at 13:17 #1751233The only party in the UK advocating taking the evil and irrational Trump on is the Liberal Democrats. They are the country’s only hope. Unfortunately, Starmer thinks a softly softly approach will be effective, whereas Trump reads this a weakness.
January 22, 2026 at 17:14 #1751279Starmer stood his ground yesterday and said he wouldn’t be blackmailed by Trump , he wasn’t and Trump has now backdowned after the European stance , not sure how Starmer can be criticised here …

Blimey, we really are well and truly f***ed, then.
