Sobetsu faces seven rivals in Fillies’ Mile

    BY KEITH MELROSE 1:27PM 5 OCT 2016

SOBETSU, so impressive when winning a maiden by ten lengths on the Rowley Mile last month, faces seven rivals as she bids to land the Group 1 Dubai Fillies’ Mile (3.10) over the same course-and-distance on Friday.

The Dubawi filly has been made favourite based on the strength of her success less than three weeks ago, but the task will be notably tougher against several fillies with Group experience.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said: “I am very pleased with Sobetsu, she is proven on the track, which is a bonus, and I think that she has a very solid chance in the Dubai Fillies’ Mile.

“I appreciate that she has got to get past Spatial, and we very much respect her, but when they met before it was Sobetsu’s debut whereas Spatial had already run, finishing second to Wuheida. Sobetsu really came forward for that first run and was very impressive last time.”

Aidan O’Brien has won the last two Fillies’ Miles, including with Minding 12 months ago, and will this time saddle Hydrangea and Rhododendron, second and third respectively to Intricately in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last time.

Spatial already has a success over Sobetsu on the latter’s debut and could also prove a major threat, as could May Hill winner Rich Legacy. Urban Fox, third in the May Hill, and maiden winners Easy Victory and Fleabiscuit complete the field.

    Future Champions Weekend kicks off

The Fillies’ Mile is one of four Group races at Newmarket on Friday. Also for juveniles on the first day of Future Champions Weekend are the Cornwallis Stakes (1.35), in which Molecomb winner Yalta takes on the unbeaten Mrs Danvers, and the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes (2.05), which features May Hill second Grecian Light and Asidious Alexander.

There is also the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (2.40), a seven furlong contest for three-year-olds and up that has brought together Cougar Mountain and Gifted Master, first and second in the recent Joel Stakes, as well as Jallota, most recently seen when being touched off in a Group 1 at San Siro.

    Newmarket watering to maintain

With a dry forecast in East Anglia, clerk of the course Michael Prosser revealed that some watering had been required.

Speaking on Wednesday afternoon, he said: “We’ve just changed the going to good to firm, good in places. It was 50-50 around declarations time but it’s a dry, blustery day here and it has firmed up since.

“As a result, we’ve just put on 3mm in the straight to maintain current conditions. It’s a largely dry forecast, with less wind, more cloud and maybe a little bit of rain on Friday, but no more than 0.5mm to 1mm.”

Although I very much respect the verdict of the great steve I would still be keen to side with Sobetsu. Especially as Godolphin are in cracking form at the moment. I know Jac is very sweet on her as well. :good:

Twas a play on your words, Ginger, but for the avoidance of doubt, I’m another admirer of Steve. He put a hell of a lot of work into plenty of his posts and was unfailingly helpful to anyone here seeking advice or links to videos.

I think his style was too easily assumed by some members as boastful. If you read just one or two posts from him (or anyone else writing like that) it would be an understandable conclusion. I saw it just as an assertive and non fence-sitting standpoint on pretty much everything. No half measures. He calls it as he sees it and was always happy to write off horses he’d previously shown belief in if subsequent performances didn’t measure up in his eye: not an easy thing to do. Many punters cling to an original position they’ve declared publicly and hunt around for excuses.

Admittedly, some of the exchanges with GT were bordering on painful to read (on both sides) and I was surprised that they were allowed to continue at that level (although I don’t know what was going on in private, on the messaging system). Anyway, no question that Steve added plenty of value and colour here. I know he’s not a Flat only man, so he might reappear once the jumps kick in proper.

Ok found it. He’s put up Spatial yeah.

Stoute generally isn’t bullish but he sounds confident about this filly. I’m starting to wonder if I should have a bet in this at all as I now fancy half the field.

I still have a gut feeling this second string of O’Briens will run well, Hydrangea. She’s top rated on the book. Tough filly and the way she runs she’s bound to improve for the step up in distance. If she drifts out to 7/8-1 then she becomes the clear value bet.

Another one from left field is Easy Victory. If she wins that would be a huge boil over but it seems to have been forgotten that she was hugely impressive on her debut. She then ran a stinker but the bin suroor stable were having a shocker at that time and it’s clear that there was a virus in the yard.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if she ran into a place at a huge price. She’s very well bred being a half sister to Monitor closely and Mount Nelson. Having said all that the only horse to come out of her maiden win and do anything else is this glitter girl. So it could just be that she’s not that great anyway.

I think I will back Sobetsu when all’s said and done as her maiden win was just so impressive to ignore and it’s a major plus that we know she handles the track very well, but it’s becoming a tough race.

On the rest of the card, I quite like Grecian light in the Oh so sharp now she’s back on more suitable ground, and first selection is interesting in the challenge stakes as he too has been running on what I think is softer ground than he’d like.

I agree with some what you are saying but you get the same pattern over and over again. He goes off, half a dozen or so people say how great he is and then he will come back again. Surely that’s no way for anyone to carry on? It kind of belittles those who remain to keep banging on about someone who comes and goes on a regular basis. There are plenty who come up with decent stuff on here (not just tips) and the forum shouldn’t revolve around one person.

That’s fair comment, Stilvi. I wouldn’t have posted an opinion at all but I didn’t want my offhand and humorous comment (that, at least, was the intention) to be misconstrued. I’d have posted the same clarification whoever it concerned.

And I don’t like to see people storming off, coming back, storming off again and so on. GT also threatened to do so and their enmity has been long running and intense, although there were a couple of amusing cease-fires on Steve’s side when he seemed immune to anything GT or anyone else posted (much, I suspect, to the annoyance of some). That’s when I thought he’d cracked it and had discovered exactly how to handle what he’d normally have seen as unfair criticism. But the next day he’d be back in blistering form.

Anyway, it’s not for me to offer advice to anyone about what to do and when. I know in my St Leger debate with GT some time back, I’d happily have strangled him with my bare hands, but he adds an enormous amount to the forum, perhaps the best, value-wise in perception and observations imo, so I’d probably have had a lynch mob after me :)

I did not “threaten to do so” (leave) I said I’ll find it hard to continue on the forum. Thanks to many on here found it easier to continue than expected. Thanks for the character assassination Joe. There was no “enmity” on my part. As I’ve said before, Steve was both the most prolific writer and wrote longer posts than anyone else on here and also more controversial. Therefore it is hardly surprising I (being proabably the next most prolific poster) would find much more to disagree with Steve than anyone else. It’s just that I like to explain my opinion and part of doing so is to explain why the other poster’s opinion is imo wrong. Steve always saw it as “getting at him” and that misunderstanding was magnified by some TRFers agreeing with that opinion. Steve told several people that they “did not understand how to read form” or words to that effect… and yet if anyone explained why they thought he got the form of one race wrong he’d blow his top. Steve is a really knowledgeable punter and I enjoyed his posts too, but I couldn’t pussy-foot around him forever.

It sickens me that some on here criticise jockeys, trainers and even horses using THE most strongest of terms and yet can not take a bit of robust criticism of that opinion. Feeling was mutual, I’d have happily strangled you in the St Leger thread too. Colm O’Donaghue is far from my favourite jockey Joe, but you absolutely xxxx on him, accusing him of all sorts of against the rules stuff and even deliberately dangerous riding… without justification.

Sometimes it seems any TRFer can say anything they like about non-TRFers and yet if someone has the audacity to defend them – it’s somehow wrong. I try my hardest not to get personal and it’s never right not even under provocation. If I did with you Joe then I apologise, but am not aware of doing so.

I think people take this way too seriously. It’s only a forum ffs.

Back to talking the fillies mile, maybe we are overlooking the obvious with this rhodedenron or however you spell it.

It’s only a few days since Coolmore blew the arc apart and they are going for a hattrick in this race.

She’s back to the kind of ground where she showed such a devastating turn of foot at goodwood.

I’m now so torn on this fillies mile that it’s becoming a no bet race :negative:

    Mark, seriously?

You made a public declaration that you’d find it hard to continue here; in what language does that not constitute a threat to leave? I mention it and you shout character assassination, And you think Steve is sensitive?

As to the St Leger, my comment about strangling you was light-hearted (though I reserve the right to reconsider).

Would’ve hoped you’d see the difference between someone “storming off, coming back, storming off again” and someone who wants to remain on the forum if he possibly can. There’s no “threat” there; if health allows I will remain on the forum.

You said “their enmity has been long running and intense”, that Joe is the “character assassination” I am referring to.

enmity – a state or feeling of active opposition or hostility.

…And you think this active opposition or hostility has been “long running and intense”.

I can only speak for myself, but there was/is NO “enmity” on my part! Yes, I am sensitive about people portraying me as a nasty little XXXX! :negative:
