Agree VF. Ambiente Friendly ought to be favourite but I don’t think he’ll stay. AOB has at least 3 that I fancy more than City of Troy but which ones will run? Ground could also be a factor. If it comes up soft, I would be looking at Dancing Gemini and (depressingly) Dallas Star

Grosvenor square has the right profile but ran an absolute stinker in his trial. Can’t see being good enough to improve that much but maybe end up being competitive in the voltigeur or the king Edward at ascot.

Grosvenor Square’s seasonal debut wasn’t as bad as City Of Troy’s and he’s 7-4 ;o). Also GS was 3rd to horses that had already had seasonal runs. But you could be right he could go elsewhere so it won’t matter.

Economics is sticking to 10 furlongs by the sounds of it, just as Maureen Haggas suggested he should after the Dante.

On a separate note, when Haggas mentions the quick turnaround time, does it make sense to run the premier trial so close to the Derby? I know it is due to Epsom being on 1st June this year because of how the calendar has fallen but could Epsom have been put back a week? Would that have affected Royal Ascot that much?

“On a separate note, when Haggas mentions the quick turnaround time, does it make sense to run the premier trial so close to the Derby?”

He was taken out of the Derby as they thought he wasn’t the right type so the talk about the gap is largely irrelevant. If he was a Derby entrant/type for Haggas he may have used an earlier trial as a prep.

AOB says City Of Troy could be the most talented horse he has ever trained for the Derby. Fill yer boots! ;o)

Looking at the weather forecast maybe I can get my ancient wisdom bet out of the bin

The more rain the better for him

Since AOB was saying pretty much the same before the guineas presumably your boots are fairly empty at the moment, Mike?

The only interest I can see in this season’s Derby is whether City Of Troy is going to crash or thrash them. I really cannot get exited by our premier flat race.

The more I know the less I understand.

It stopped being the premier flat race a while a go

Yes, it is so “premier” that the trainer of what is most likely the best 3yo colt in Britain does not want to run him.

If Ian Davies was still allowed to post here, I have little doubt he would be saying the Derby will only be the premier race again when it is reduced to 10 furlongs.

The prix du jockey club has been won by

    Ace Impact
    Vadeni
    St marks basilica
    Mishriff
    Sotsass

    The last 5 years.

2 Arc winners an Arc 2nd (vadeni would surely have made it 3 Arc winners on better ground)

The derby has been won by

    Auguste rodin
    Desert crown
    Adayar
    Serpentine
    Anthony van dyck

The prix du jockey club has become the best 3yo race in europe

Can see Ancient Wisdom going off 2nd fav if the ground is soft or worse

Just depends on how much rain falls

Ancient Wisdom has the right profile, imo. If you allow some kind of a massive improvement for his first outing, then he will be 2nd Fav. He ran in he “right” races last year, especially his win in the Autumns Stakes impressed me the most. The two proper horses he beat four and five and a half lengths were well clear of the fourth and have upheld the form in style so far. Next time out he beat German 2,000 Guineas winner in the Futurity Stakes.

12/1 or whatever he is right now still makes a lot of sense. Allow him, like any other horse so far this season, to come on a lot for his first start and he’ll be a proper 1-2-3 horse for Saturday.

Looks a very mixed forecast of showers.
Still very possible Epsom will miss most of the rain, FF. Just like Newbury did for the Lockinge.

Could be soft, but it could also be proper good-firm (although like Newbury – I doubt they’d ever call it that in the official description).

    It’s the wrong profile, he’s a Dubawi. ;o)
