So pleased to admit that both me and Willie Carson got it all wrong in saying that City of Troy would not win the Derby. Not only did he win it but won it well by Ryan Moore riding him with his usual great skill and powering through the field at just the right time to win easily. City of Troy is a lovely horse and showed his class over the rest of the field. Ryan Moore is brilliant, the best jockey in the world and on a level with the greats of Lester and Steve Cauthen. Such a quiet unassuming man, very likeable and he has a brilliant partnership with Aiden O`Brien, who is a top class trainer, his record stands for itself. Also he always thanks all of his stable staff involved with the winning horse and that is highly commendable, showing his gratitude for a team effort. Unlike snotty John Gosden, all me,me,me and who never mentions a team effort because they all work round there and you only get to meet your horse when you take your allotted charge to the races. So yes, I am highly delighted that me and Willie got it all wrong.
June 3, 2024 at 19:15 #1696901Could well be PR, only public words.
Am not saying he does not mean it but we don’t know. For all we know AOB might be nasty and never thanks anyone in private. Whist Gosden might be the opposite in private.
For me, AOB thanks far too many people anyway.
Gosden has thanked people before on TV, he just does not go through his entire staff, therefore it doesn’t stay in our minds as much.If I got a thank you from someone I knew thanked everyone then it would mean far less than from someone who thanks fewer.
Value Is EverythingJune 3, 2024 at 21:58 #1696913Pretty sure that AOB is a nice chap (based on heresay and my own very limited experience). He isn’t a natural when it comes to the media though and I think this is why he tries to deflect attention by thanking absolutely everyone (which does get a bit tedious). I have no reason to think that Gosden is anything other than a decent boss either. Not sure why he’s singled out, rather than the likes of Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, William Haggas etc who also don’t list every member of staff in interviews.
Agree with edfiggyrock about Ryan though. Often tetchy with interviewers (which is sometimes frustrating but often hilarious) but charming, humble and entertaining in real life.
June 3, 2024 at 22:50 #1696918Listen.
Would AOB have been bigging up Justify progeny as having “more class and more speed than Galileos” if the great Galileo was still alive and covering mares ?
Yes AOB is a great stallion salesman for The Lads
June 4, 2024 at 00:20 #1696928He certainly would not be saying it if Coolmore did not own Justify either.
Another example of AOB trying to con people / breeders, Devonian

Well, apart from the employment tribunal that he lost – they ruled that he had set up a redundancy Hunger Games (OK) rigged so the employee he wanted rid of couldn’t possibly win (not OK).
June 4, 2024 at 06:07 #1696934Browsing a couple of articles from sectional analysers if that’s your thing they upgraded Los Angeles’ run as he was up with a decent pace and paid for it late compared to the first 2, who were patiently ridden, was commended for not folding at the business end. One said… “While acknowledging that City Of Troy is probably quite a good Derby winner, Ambiente Friendly may be able to get closer to him another day, while Los Angeles definitely can. I have the last-named rated 121, and he merits interest in future big races, even if he does come up against City Of Troy again. That is, assuming he gets paced more efficiently.”
June 4, 2024 at 16:03 #1696967I think that’s quite strange given plenty are saying hes a stayer who is a cert for the St Leger. Its where sectional analysis is slightly flawed in my view, I’m not suggesting its all flawed there is a lot of good stuff but actually if you have a stayer then a strong pace is ideal for them and possibly a bit flattering as it brings them more into it over doubtful stayers.
You see it said when you get a steady run race that you should markup those from the rear but if they are a horse who can accelerate quickly off a slow pace they are advantaged if anything, see Absurde in the County Hurdle as an example. Sectional theory would say hes worth upgrading because he came from rear in steadily run race but it ignores him being an Ebor winner on the flat not a NH bred horse.
June 4, 2024 at 16:19 #1696969I presume it was an overly strong pace, TTM.
If a “stayer” goes too quick in the early stages of a 12f race then even he will slow in the final furlong.Value Is EverythingJune 4, 2024 at 16:56 #1696973Just rewatched AOB’s interview with Lydia Hislop after the race and I half expected him to start singing that Housemartins song. “I love you from the bottom of my glasses case…”
June 21, 2024 at 23:38 #1699355Or perhaps even The Beautiful South!
Disappointing from Voyage today but still think someone should in tribute put Voyage Voyage as a backing track to that great Epsom solo run
