Diplomatically put! Unfortunately that ride was as bad as it gets! His stable
companion comes out and makes all, whilst Johnny detaches himself
some 15l from the lead and sits motionless for 3/4 of the race.Had Johnny
actually wanted to win the race, he could have done so quite easily at any point, instead he rode a perfect race to finish 2nd…Totally agree – and I didn’t have a penny on but wiewed the race with interest.
Murtagh’s post race reaction spoke volumes. He was more or less telling Mike Cattermole not to talk to him – and thereby avoid being asked "embarrassing" questions.
It was a disgraceful ride and even the normally supportive John Francome was finding it difficult to excuse it. Plainly, the best horse in the race finished second.

May 7, 2009 at 20:29 #226173Golden Sword is a good horse. However, it’s also the most annoying horse in the OBrien camp.
I can honestly say that I’ve bet on this horse EVERY time he’s lost only to miss him both times he has won.
Arghh

Not at Chester but thought I would mention I will be having another punt tonight on Norwind at Wetherby. He may be giving away a stone and more to everything but Sam Jones only needs to point him in the right direction.
No idea yet what price will be on offer early but you can expect him to be backed off the boards before the off.7/2 in plenty of places and over 4/1 on Betfair as I type, although not to much money. 5/1 has been taken to £16. I must admit I thought it would be shorter. 7/2 BOG at Stan James looks tempting.
As for Chester Only one possible bet for me today which would be Dream Desert in the opener. Hopefully Creighton can drop him in from his outside draw and come with a late run to land the spoils. Fanjuna would rate a danger if staying.
Edit 13.20 Now 6.6 on Betfair for Nordwind ! Fists, you’re not stitching us up are you ?

What do you think
and please don’t complain about price there is more than one way to skin a cat.May 7, 2009 at 22:17 #226191Nice work Fist!
This horse seems to have finally got the will to win!
(For the record, I missed the punt

I truely can’t believe the price it’s finished. Hope you’ve collected enough for another few bricks in your penthouse
May 8, 2009 at 00:29 #226225Johnny Murtagh/ Masterofthehorse.

One to forget.
I cannot feel this a horse to forget in my honest opinion, yes agree the ride was misjudged by Johnny Murtagh, and told the stewards that he made a positive move from four furlongs out, which was not the case as he was still sitting motionless on the horse at that stage
The winner also from the same camp basically was no mug, led from the front when i suppose every punter presumed was going to be the pace maker for the favourite.
I have to hold my hands up and admit i have backed Masterofthehorse anti-post for the Derby at 25/1 each way,and still believe if getting to Epsom he will be on the premesis near the business end.
With out going to much into this debate, Mr Murtagh is not the first and certainly will not be the last to misjudge a ride on a horse.and i still think Masterofthehorse will come on for his first run this year and looking at that run today at Chester what i saw he will have no problem getting the Derby trip.

Not the horse, oh no – but definitely the ride it was given – correct.
Murtagh is being somewhat disingenuous if that is what he told the stewards. Simon Holt, during commentary, was quick to point out that Murtagh was riding Masterofthehorse ( out the back ) like he was a very good horse.
I immediately thought the same. He seemed to be oozing confidence midway through the race, but for some reason decided not to move an inch or make inroads earlier – considering the nature of the track.
I certainly think the horse is one for the notebook, but I don’t see him as the Epsom Derby winner.

May 8, 2009 at 01:23 #226243Its true Johnny Murtagh’s ride looked bad but the fate of the pair (Sight Unseen & Too Much Trouble) that stalked the winner, finished 5th and 6th well beaten off, may point to Golden Sword being better than immediately given credit for. I hope so.

Cheers on Norwind guys!
But what about Johnny Murtagh?
I don’t often critisise jockey but that was shocking. If he had sat any longer he would have ended up with piles.
I never backed the horse, never had a bet in the race at all. I watched it out of curiosity thinking here we go again more sour grapes.
Not a bit of it. He didn’t just misjudge that he made a complete bollocks of it. It was so bad I thought the horse wasn’t off.
The horse was hacking when the pace picked up and he just sat there for over a furlong. That’s fine to do that on most tracks but it’s a cardinal sinat Chester. He could have easily moved up a few places and been in a far better position to challenge off the home turn. The position he put the horse in, he would have had problems winning if he had been on Nijinsky himself.
Shocking ride and he’s very lucky not to have recieved a ban IMO
May 8, 2009 at 01:37 #11244The third and final day of what has been an interesting meeting to say the least!
I’ve already managed to get 13/2 on what I think if the bet of the day in Mister Hardy (1:45). Tylicki renews his partnership with Mister Hardy, with who he landed a decent handicap at Doncaster last month by six lengths. He’s 2lbs higher than when winning that race and I firmly believe he’s got a great chance tomorrow. Opus Maximus is the alternative
In the 2:45 I can’t really see Frozen Fire being beaten. However, if he does need the run then Buccellati and Tastahil can chase him home. With that in mind I’ll have a very small interest on the latter at the prices.
In the sprint handicap at 3:15 i’ll be on Green Beret aswell as Gitano Hernando in the 2:15
May 8, 2009 at 02:01 #226255I will be playing the three tomorow, with the first being
HUZZAH
in the first on the card, despite the Acclamation colt being out of form, he won on this course this time last year and is only 3lb higher than that win and the Barry Hills factor that his string is in good order.
My second bet will be in the Grp 3 Ormonde Stakes on
ALL THE ACES
who was pulled last week and his form here at Chester was boosted when Doctor Fremantle managed to hold on yesterday who he finished second to in the Chester Vase last year.
And my final bet comes in the Sprint on the card in Alan Berry’s
CITY DANCER
who’s reappearance third to Spin Cycle at Musselburgh this year showed some promise.

On his best for Frozen Fire would have to be fancied but getting him to perform to that standard doesn’t seem to be easy. Two of his last three performance were very poor efforts one of which was at Epsom.
I couldn’t be confident this would be his track.
13/2 is a huge price for All the Aces who I think is going places. He a lovely horse, very game and will win his fare share of races this season.
With 8 going to post he looks a really good EW bet against what could be a dodgy favourite.
May 8, 2009 at 02:19 #226257Is it at all possible to win from stall 8? Just like the look of Fault. Also South Easter.
May 8, 2009 at 05:20 #226268The horses between Golden Sword and Masterofthehorse are not good enough, and neither are the O’Brien duo themselves.
(At the very least, this isn’t convincing form from a Derby standpoint)
End of. Next trial please.
May 8, 2009 at 10:15 #226274I’m really tempted to give All the Aces a go as well but am a little worried about the ground.
The RP says he was taken out of last Saturdays race at Newmarket because of the ground. Isnt it as least as firm at Chester now as it was Saturday?

I didn’t know that to be honest (too late now
) but I doubt they would be running him if it was. Could be there was a bit of jar in the ground last week and it was that rather than he doesn’t go on good to firm. Horse only had 3 runs last year and it couldbe they think he may not stand much racing so were being ultra careful. All guesswork of course.
