It will be interesting to see if John Gosden pulls Expresso Star out of the Huxley Stakes on ground that is probably already faster that that which caused so much concern in the Lincoln? My view is that JG’s concern was the distance on that ground, rather than any fear for the horse or his not acting on it.
That form makes ES at least listed class, and he can only improve for the extra distance tomorrow, so should be up to taking this gp3. The danger would be Dr Fremantle, but there wouldn’t be much between them on the ratings and, lacking an outing and over a distance short of his best, he might not even hang on to favoritism, come the off.May 7, 2009 at 00:54 #226032The Doctor opened on the exchanges around 9/4 last night Reet with Expresso Star around 10/3.
I think youre right – I wouldnt be suprised if JG does pull Expresso Star out tomorrow. He’s entered in the Lockinge next week at a distance he’s proven on and rain is expected around Newbury before next Saturday.
I dont want him to be pulled out but wont be suprised if it happens.
May 7, 2009 at 03:06 #11234I’ve just been looking at Fivefootsomethingorother in the 4.35, and it’s just been mentioned on teletext, so I’m going to have another look. and that horse of Henry Cecils. Also, Cyflymder.

I presume you’re referring to
Sight Unseen
(2.45), moehat? Masterofthehorse clearly has the form to win the race following his third to Sea The Stars and Mourayan in the Beresford, but he disappointed at Doncaster and I get the feeling that O’Brien’s horses are coming on plenty for their first run. Sight Unseen created a massive impression when winning at Newbury and, though fast ground wouldn’t appear to be ideal, he looks a smart colt in the making.
Despite running an awful race in the September Stakes last, well, September, I think
Humungous
(1.45) has a decent chance. Ten furlongs on fast ground would look to be perfect for him, and if Spencer can pick a path through the field on the turn (I think the rail is moved out on the second day, affording those held up the chance of finding a gap) he has the ability to win this.
Expresso Star
(2.15) and
Lucky Numbers
(4.35) will be my other interests for the day.
May 7, 2009 at 03:41 #226068I really like the look of
Debussy
in the 2:45. One of my picks to follow for the season after his decent debut under Moore on the AW and he looked like a very decent horse when winning at Epsom last time out.
I can’t quite put my finger on Masterofthehorse. His run at Doncaster in the RP Trophy looked too bad to be true but thats not the first time he’s looked like he lacked a certain something. I personally dont think he fired in the Beresford either.
I echo Equi’s comments, AOB’s do seem to need the run (the ones that dont look like classy players in fairness) and Debussy has shown enough to warrant a decent bet from me. A bigger priced alternative for me would be
Too Much Trouble
.
Sight Unseen looked like a classy horse last time out but a couple of things niggle at me regarding him. I’m slightly sceptical as to what he actually beat that day. Clowance House (3rd that day) only got his neck in front for the first time this Sunday and isn’t the most reliable of yardsticks.
However, if you read the form literally compared with Hayedes (the other Cecil runner that day) you have to give him a decent chance after Hayedes hacked up last week.
I was hoping to bet on Doctor Freemantle in the 2:15 but the prices make him unbackable for me. Instead I’ll be on
Resort
in the 4:15 and
Parisian Pyramid
in the closer.

Michael Stoute wouldn’t normally step a horse up from a Wolverhampton maiden 2nd to a classic trial without some justification but, in a slowly run race, Saptapadi ran very green, was boxed in for much of the way, and from a poor position, wasn’t persevered with when lacking the initial pace to go with the principals in the sprint to the line.
As a full brother to Patkai, today’s circumstances should suit him much better, and at around 7/1 against not much opposition, it’s worth taking the risk that he’s come on for the experience.
As I’ve already mentioned elsewhere, Expresso Star looks a solid bet to overturn another Stoute incumbent.May 7, 2009 at 11:26 #226080

Expresso Star is a very nice horse and hard to oppose but while he won the Lincoln well he wasn’t exactly badly in.
This race might be worth a lot less than the lincoln but it still a huge step up in class for him.
Dr Freemantle was thrown in at the deep end last season taking on New Approach in the Derby, Conduit in the St Leger and in betwwen time going to France for the Juddmonte.
It would be fair to say one horse is stepping up in class and the other is stepping down in class which can make life difficult for the punter.
Expresso Star will definitely relish the trip but will be happy on this tight
track? All the Aces can act on this course having won the Chester Vase here last season beating the very talented All the Aces. All the Aces went on to run a cracker at Ascot behind Campanologist and Conduit which hold the form up.
I believe SMS had planned to also run Taajaweed here but has decided to depend on Dr Feemantle and his future entries would suggest he is not overly concerend about this drop back in trip.
I feel there is enough positives about Dr Freemantle for me tohave a mjor bet on him today and 7/4 seemd a deacnt price in what looks no more than a 3 horse race to me.
3rd in the betting Staying On may have a chancce but what is offputing is he was 100/1 shot when talking on a New Approach at this distance last season and ran like a 300/1 shot finishing stone last.
Not at Chester but thought I would mention I will be having another punt tonight on Norwind at Wetherby. He may be giving away a stone and more to everything but Sam Jones only needs to point him in the right direction.
No idea yet what price will be on offer early but you can expect him to be backed off the boards before the off.May 7, 2009 at 13:46 #226098I’ve gone for
Expresso Star
in the 2.15, showed blistering pace in the Lincoln 2 seconds above standard and will be too quick for Dr Freemantle IMO. SMS’s is substantially stepping down in trip and think ES will run away with it and will hopefully be one to watch over the summer

I must admit I thought it would be shorter. 7/2 BOG at Stan James looks tempting.
As for Chester Only one possible bet for me today which would be Dream Desert in the opener. Hopefully Creighton can drop him in from his outside draw and come with a late run to land the spoils. Fanjuna would rate a danger if staying.
Edit 13.20 Now 6.6 on Betfair for Nordwind ! Fists, you’re not stitching us up are you ?
May 7, 2009 at 14:42 #226105Just having Fivefootnumberone and Cyflymder in the 4.35. Sight Unseen seems to be drifting a bit so I think I’ll ignore that one. Noticed that, of all of the horses in the 2.45, Masterofthehorse is the only one that’s entered in a 10f race later in the year; wondered if they thought he may not stay 12f? Quite fancy Tartan Gunna in the 3.15.
May 7, 2009 at 14:52 #226109Seems a ‘big ask’ for Sight Unseen, a once-raced maiden winner over a course very different from Newbury.
Colin
May 7, 2009 at 14:59 #226111Yes, but it is Henry Cecil doing the asking! Doesn’t seem to have a Derby entry, so I suppose the great man needs to find out how good the horse is.
May 7, 2009 at 16:08 #226125Sir Michael Stoute has a good record in the 2.15 and I’m hopeful that he’ll have course winner, Dr. Fremantle, spot on for this.
He’s my only Chester selection for today.

May 7, 2009 at 16:10 #226126I’ve always been an ‘enry fan and I acknowledge what you’re saying.
Native Ruler does have a Derby entry by the way.
Colin
May 7, 2009 at 17:56 #226147Johnny Murtagh/ Masterofthehorse.

One to forget.

He wasn’t overly keen to talk to Mike Cattermole, was he? What better way for Coolmore to prove to the racing authorities that their pacemaking outsiders are there to run on their merits (Michael Tabor was on to a winner either way).
May 7, 2009 at 19:11 #226156Johnny Murtagh/ Masterofthehorse.

One to forget.
Diplomatically put! Unfortunately that ride was as bad as it gets! His stable
companion comes out and makes all, whilst Johnny detaches himself
some 15l from the lead and sits motionless for 3/4 of the race.Had Johnny
actually wanted to win the race, he could have done so quite easily at any point, instead he rode a perfect race to finish 2nd!! Kieran would have got
a years ban for that! What would have helped Murtaghs cause was for him to acknowledge Mike Cattermoles interview and at least say i rode that like a T**t! Even if he didn"t mean a a word of it! A Million pounds was bet
on the horse on Betfair alone.i dont think we have heard the last of this ride, particularly with Johnnys couldn"t care less attitude! - AuthorPosts
