Still sticking with Desert Sea; he did beat Downhiller and I think will get the distance. Horses that win on the all weather get overlooked a bit sometimes. Agree with Strike up the Band.
May 6, 2009 at 15:39 #225968Green Malaleshi always wins at Chester
May 6, 2009 at 15:50 #225970In the 3.15 I’ve backed Irish-trained An Tadh, coming off a conditions race win at Dundalk and has run in better class than this on turf. On the face of it an 11 draw is a no-no, but bearing in mind stalls 2 and 10 inside are non-runners that means he’s running from stall 9 which breaks the psychological barrier of a double figure stall. The sneaky part is that’s not obvious from a quick glance. Whatever, 23 didn’t seem a bad exchange price!
May 6, 2009 at 16:00 #225972Lot of differing views on the big handicaps. I am avoiding the sprint as if you mis sthe break your done for! And I cant bank on horses starting well. Token selection would be Angus Newz who goes well here and ran well at Bath the other day.
I see a few of you have gone for Gala Evening. I like this horse and did me a good turn at Newbury before just failing at Sandown when hurdling and has run solid on the level since. My main concern surrounds his ability to travel. He isn’t always the best traveller through a race and could easily find himself losing positions around the turns. Would like to see him run in Northumberland Plate on a more galloping track.
May 6, 2009 at 16:28 #225976I also like Gala Evening, but preference is for Formax to scythe through the field late on. Would give Angus Newz a chance in the sprint with also an EW mention for Green Manalishi
May 6, 2009 at 17:37 #225983I have already played my bets today on the two Aiden O’Brien runners at Chester with Perfect Truth (Won 9/1) and Changingoftheguard in the last.
The race you guys are referring i would not have a clue in this, i suppose this will give a good insight for the cesarewitch, but if i was going to have a wager it would probably be on Downhiller with Eddie Ahern on board, but that is just a speculation, no reason just like the jockey i suppose, but i will not be having a bet in the race at all.

Isn’t that like saying don’t back over jumps because if they fall.. Chester, obviously, is most pace dominant track going. The pace horse from what i could see have placed 9/10 of the runnings from this race. Strike Up The Band will stand one hell of a chance, Dandy Nicholls must be licking his lips at the fact he has got a draw of 1 with this horse, he was dropped in the weights after the Nottingham run so only gets in because of that. Backing stall 1 blind over 5f at Chester is profitable on it’s own let alone when you get a pace horse such as Strike Up The Band. This is surely the best chance he will have ever again of winning a good handicap. Already we have seen the pace horse in the 1.45 and the 2.15 win. I have backed Strike Up The Band and covered my win stake with a place wedge also.
May 6, 2009 at 18:03 #225985Phew; thank goodness there were no late withdrawals! Had Tom Folan and Goodbye Earl ew in the first
; Goodbye Earl would have been better at 25/1 but got Tom Folan at 20/1; Hope Strike up the Band can win, but have had a small ew on Good Gorsan [again because of the draw]. Might be worth keeping an eye on Henry Cecils runners this week!
May 6, 2009 at 18:53 #225993Interesting race the 3.15, should pay to give horses chances from this i expect.
Sohraab
is a very decent animal on quick ground. In fairness
Strike Up The Band
had him in trouble at one point but ultimately i think the presence of
Angus Newz
has meant he has gone a little to quick and
Sohraab
has been able to keep reeling him in. He’s very high in the handicap now
SUTB
and has struggled in better company, today looked a golden opportunity.
Angus Newz
no doubt will be back here later in the year for a listed fillies race, she seems in fine order and should win races. Expected today she would have to play second fiddle for the lead but she was very smartly away, enthusiam remains it seems.
Good Gorsoon
was one I was hugely interested in today, i don’t think he has overly handled the track today. But he has finished well enough. Got caught on heels, was extremely keen for too long, thought the drop in trip and some cover would see him settle but off just 88 he is definately going to win handicaps this year.
Green Manalishi
came home well enough from a wide draw and got involved late. He will be better when he has a lower draw around here at another point in the year and can race closer to the pace.
An Tadh
is another one who would rather dominate, over 5f i think it’s essential so races where he can lead would be of interest of his handicap mark
I would suggest firmly keeping an eye on
Elhamri
, i expect he will go back to Goodwood in a couple of weeks time for the handicap he won last year, he will be about a 1lb higher than that after this run and providing he gets quick ground I think he will be spot on for it should they choose to go back, which looks likely.
May 6, 2009 at 18:59 #225994Sir Micheal Stoute’s
JEDI
was beaten into fifth by Aqwaal at Sandown this year and having a look at the run again i felt he would make a stayer in time and could go a lot better now stepping up to 12f today and at 5/1 each way gets your money back for a place claim 1-2-3

They have pit Harbinger froma fashonable stable up at evens and GA Butler’s Beauchamp Xerxes is available at 20/1. They were seperated by under 2 lengths last time and Beauchamp Xerxes looked a bit green.
Not saying he’ll beat the fav who could leave the form miles behind but having a tenner ew as an interest.
May 6, 2009 at 20:14 #226006Interesting stat that no Chester Cup winner has won next time out; also, first 4 were all carrying 9st.

At a guess maybe because there isn’t that many races over that distance to suit without stepping up drastically in class.
May 6, 2009 at 21:50 #226014Daarheem made my day

I was spot on about the sprint handicap in that mine and Equi’s selection would battle it out in the final furlong……just picked the wrong one!
May 6, 2009 at 22:15 #226015McCririck said just before the sprint that no horse had won it from stall 1 [wish I’d heard that before]; that, added to the fact that every time I back a horse win only it comes second sealed the fate of Strike up the Band. Sorry.

Did you not get my PM, halfwaytoheaven?
I presume then that I failed to press submit, either that or there’s a very confused TRF member somewhere wondering why the hell I’m calling them HTH!
Double Banded was, ultimately, very disappointing, though it has to be said that he pulled far too hard early on. Star Lover and Sohraab (I almost reversed him with Strike Up The Band, just in case Dandy had him in a winning mood) more than made up for that failure however, with the former ridiculously over-priced at 13/2.
