Aidan introduced to the racing fans three Montjues on Saturday and Sunday Sep 26-7; although all three had been in public before their improvement was so noticeable that they stood out. Joshua Tree, at Ascot. Jan Venmeer at Gowran and St Nicholas Abbey at the Curragh. All three won handsomely and must be tracked for next year! And that is not to mention the host of Galileos in the yard. Maybe next year Aidan will achieve his dream of a 1-2-3 in the Derby!
November 12, 2009 at 00:17 #13202I find it fascinating that while John is dumping Fortune to give Frankie the ride because he has ridden in America and he states that Fortune has never ridden in America the Sheik is dumping Frankie to give the ride to a fellow ,Ahmed Ajtebi, who has never ridden in America.Fortune is bumped by Frankie for a good reason according to Gosden while Frankie is bumped for the exactly opposite reason. Interesting!
November 12, 2009 at 03:49 #258307What’s the matter? Did you think you were losing the argument in the other thread?
I think it has been a question of Godolphin keeping the same jockeys for horses as much as possible.
In this example, Dettori has NEVER ridden Vale Of York, whilst Ajtebi has ridden it five times.
Why don’t you just say that you don’t like Dettori as a person, and you don’t like him as a jockey?
November 12, 2009 at 10:20 #258318Andyod,
you do seem to have it in for Frankie for whatever reason and this would not be the first or second time you have had an axe to grind. Actually the same could be said for anything Godolphin as well. Could it be that because he rides for Godolphin and is the most popular jockey it just does not fit into your worshipping at the altar of everything Ballydoyle.
Rest assured Johnny Murtaugh will never reach the type of popularity Frankie enjoys, not that he probably cares much.
November 13, 2009 at 03:25 #258448You are both right and wrong. I believe Frankie is one of the best jockeys in the world. If I had a Group One horse I would put Frankie up before anyone else. However I also believe that he is a bit of whiner and a crier. As for popular. Popular with whom?
I just don’t like his attitude to others. The arrogance of claiming that he represented Europe speaks for itself.
However that was not the point of the post.It was to show the contradictions between trainers in their reason for jocking off jockeys.I thought that that might be worthy of discussion.Obviously it was not.You seem to think that having ridden a horse before is a good enough justification for not dumping one jockey but not good enough to keep another jockey on board. I fail to follow the logic of that. Regarding Fortune a recent article in the "Times on Line" highlighted the Fortune issue .
Incidentally I was the first to dump on Murtagh after his riding last year in the BC if you care to look it up.Both last year and this I think he was godawful.November 13, 2009 at 11:54 #258472Frankie IS popular. When he won the Derby with Authorized he almost put racing on the front page, apparently. An American couple were interviewed by Derek Thompson on Channel 4 racing a few years ago, and when asked what about British racing they would take back to america if they could, they woman replied Frankie Dettori.
No one else seems to have taken umbrage at Frankie’s Europe remark, though we haven’t heard it. There is definitely a Ryder Cup feeling to the Breeders’ Cup, with it being USA versus Europe so I simply fail to see the issue on this one. (This was helped by those bare years when us Brits had to take succour from the occasional French victory.)
This table was published in the RP on Monday:-
BC wins
15 Jerry Bailey
13 Mike Smith
12 Pat Day
9 Frankie Dettori
9 Garrett Gomez
9 Chris McCarron
8 Gary StevensI don’t see any other Europeans in that list.
On the jocking off issue, Fortune has emerged with a lot of credit – both last year and this. However, what can a jockey do? Whinging will probably just lose you your job.
Dettori is in a difficult situation himself, with the desire of Godolphin to develop homegrown, or at least Arab, talent. I haven’t come across any whinging from him on this subject.
(What I am most surprised about is that Crisford is still the Racing Manager. I’d have thought this is one of the first jobs that would be taken in-house, as you just need the gift of the gob to deal with the media, and a smattering knowledge of the racing programme.)
There is only only reason to hate Dettori, and that is because he is an Arsenal supporter. Same applies to AP McCoy, which is why I won’t be supporting him for Sports Personality of the year, for which my vote would go to Victoria Pendleton, if she were nominated.
November 13, 2009 at 13:43 #258490Hate is a rather strong emotion is it not?I guess I should hate Murtagh because he is a Manchester United fan?
No I don’t go that far, just think that he should realise that what is happening to him by Godolfin might make him sensitive not to do the same to others. But that was the issue I wanted to discuss. It does seem that he is no longer first jockey to Godolfin (except in name)and that in my opinion is newsworthy and is being greeted with a profound silence by the press.I believe the parting started when he refused to follow Said bin Suroor’s instructions in a race and came up the wrong side of the course despite being told where to race one day. Then he would not fly except to group races following the accident leaving Godolfin to find other jockeys for lesser meetings. But to allay your fears I believe he is one of the great present-day jockeys most especially when riding in France, where he is simply brilliant!
Incidentally do you think if Ahmed Ajtebi’s name was Fortune would he have kept the ride on Duke of York?November 13, 2009 at 13:56 #258493If I may continue Julian Muscat has a fascinating article in Times Online November 5th,2009 on the subject so maybe I am contradicting myself!
November 13, 2009 at 15:42 #258508I must admit I found the Fortune situation a little surprising last year. Maybe the owner wanted to save on paying out on the airfare, and instead used a jockey that was going to the meeting anyway!
Spent a little longer finding the Ajtebi article than I ought, due to my inadequate methodology (didn’t use the search facility within Times online for a few minutes ) so here it is for others.

To answer your question, no he wouldn’t have kept the ride. We are all aware that Ajtebi is being fast-tracked, and I am not aware that it is unwarranted.
(Not sure why I have allowed myself to become embroiled in this debate, as I don’t usually take much notice of jockeys.)
November 29, 2009 at 21:48 #13357Goodbye goodbye goodbye Dubai. Where does this meltdown of the Dubai money world leave the big race meeting after XMAS? Will the head of Godolfin have the audacity to run a carnival while the ship is sinking? Will owners and trainers take IOU’s as payment for a venture into La la land? I don’t think so.

March 25, 2010 at 06:47 #14528A first jockey for an owner meant that he rode the owners first string. In the past an owner’s first jockey rode the owners horses no matter who trained them. Is Frankie no longer first jockey for the Sheik?Just first jockey for a yard?
March 26, 2010 at 00:04 #285626He’s always been first jockey for bin Suroor but appointed by Sheikh Mohammed.
Think back to the Breeders Cup, Dettori was in town but just because he’s bin Suroors jockey didnt mean he picked up plum rides on Gayego et al.
It’s a branch out move focused around 2yos from what I can tell and is very welcome.
Interesting moves this year by Godolphin….especially leaving Passion For Gold and their chief classic hopes at home in the UK this year!
