I would guess the deal had already been done, or that an option was in place, before the Derby. I doubt that they’d have let Frankie ride it if there was even the remotest possibility of it going to Coolmore.
June 8, 2007 at 21:43 #64063Since the owners of the horse don’t need more money I wonder why they sold him? Do you think they were pressured to do so?
June 8, 2007 at 21:49 #64064the owners are rich businessmen, but £15m (reputedly) is still a lotta wonga!
June 8, 2007 at 22:23 #64065Didn’t Coolmore pay that for a breeze up yearling last year.
Is 15mil really a lot of money?
June 9, 2007 at 06:57 #64066Quite a lot I’d suggest Andy!
June 9, 2007 at 19:14 #64067In addition, the owners/current leasees are not stud owners themselves. At the end of the horse’s racing career (been referred to as end of 3yo campaign since before the Derby) they would need to come to some arrangement with a stud anyway. They can’t just stand Authorized in their back garden.
Given the business connections between them and Dubai and the previous good relationship with the Sheikhs, Darley would be the obvious location. I expect deals were struck, but nothing new there.
TBH, I don’t think it’s too much about getting Coolmore blood – an impressive Derby winner like that with ‘friendly’ owners would be attractive to Darley, whether he was by Kingmambo or Daylami or Linamix or whatever.
I think the main objection to Sheikh Mo going shopping is usually that the horses are whisked away from their successful trainer and sent into the Godolphin lottery machine, which may well make a Horlicks of their career. Fortunately, with Authorized, Street Sense and Hard Spun, this will not be happening, hence the lack of outcry.
June 9, 2007 at 19:18 #64068
Sal,
I was a bit surprised by the US deals for Street Sense and Hard Spun, simply because I can’t see the demand for sires proven on dirt when so many tracks there are switching to Polytrack or something similar.
Am I missing something – do those two have something in their breeding that suggests they would be capable of siring top class turf/Polytrack horses?

I agree to a point sal but I’d think that a nice ‘in’ to a top class Montjeu would have been much more attractive to them than any of the three you mention.
June 10, 2007 at 16:55 #64070Not meaning necessarily those specific sires corm, just ones that are not Coolmore bloodlines. Darley already stand several sires that are by Sadler’s Wells or from that line (as well as some Danehills), so yes the Montjeu is a big bonus but not a total departure for them.
AP – Street Sense seems a logical buy for them, as the heir to the successful Darley Machiavellian line. He’s related to Mr Greeley on his dam’s side, so that’s pretty hot right now. Hard Spun – well Danzig does alright over here and the dam’s side should carry plenty of of American appeal. ÂÂÂ
The Polytrack issue may well shake up the US breeding world in the next few years, but it would be very difficult now to predict which sire lines will not adapt. I think those are both safe choices, with appeal on both sides of the pond.
June 11, 2007 at 00:08 #64071Way before the sale was announced the owners had stated that the horse would stand in England . So I don’t think they were reduced to using someone’s back yard, or garden or wherever the stallion box is kept; or the kitchen maid to hold the visiting mares.

No, I think the announcement that the horse would stand in England was simply a sign that, even at that stage, Darley was the most likely choice and they would choose Dalham Hall instead of Kildangan. I think the idea that they were ‘pressured’ or they were ordered not to sell to Coolmore is quite daft.

Godolphin seem to be declining; their impact on the racing in the UK is minimal at the present. Any idea why.
They moved their 2yo’s to France then back to England with no visible improvement. They asked trainers to train2yo’s but not 3yo’s. They seem to be searching for something but not finding it.What was the last really good tyo they raced as a 3yo?
On another subject any opinion on Frankie dodging his suspension? The authorities said they did not question his excuse that he was going on vacation.”We are not going to ask to see his airline tickets”was their explanation. Are they not supposed to enforce the law?
Would Kieren be offered the same courtesie? Is there one law for Frankie and another for the rest?Remember how they responded when he complained about Heffernan?June 28, 2007 at 17:32 #66683Can’t claim to know a whole lot about it but surely they’re boycott of Coolmore sires can’t have helped?
June 28, 2007 at 18:10 #66684Yes Andy, they do seem to be punching below their weight. Some will be pleased at their relative lack of success but I think they should be applauded for trying different approaches.
Just goes to show that, like football, having the money doesn’t guarantee trophies.
July 2, 2007 at 12:46 #105740Maybe they were a bit spoilt in previous seasons. I think they’re purchases have been somewhat questionable and also they have been a touch unlucky (Librettist, Winged Cupid and With Interest all missed a season through injury when potentially classy animals).
The last decent 2yo that raced well as a 3yo was probably Dubawi. From last season there hasn’t been much from the juvenile ranks although i’m still holding faith in Measured Tempo and Truly Royal. That’s about it.
May 3, 2008 at 18:50 #7684I bet Aidan has not yet settled on his Derby horse. I believe Jim should have prepared New Approach for the two Derbies although looking at the result of the Guineas it looks now like he only had to turn up.Where were the home brigade and Gidolfins? Will Rio de la Plata be good enough to win in France?
Will Aidan be 1,2 tomorrow in the 1000?May 3, 2008 at 19:20 #161413Possibly 2, 3
Infallible wins the 1,000
