I don’t believe New Aproach would win the Derby (the real one at Epsom) if he tried to win it from the front. He looks big, burly and I don’t think would handle Epsom. Maybe why they’ve taken the decision to bypass the race. The Curragh would suit him and his running style much better.
May 4, 2008 at 02:44 #161458Am a little but drunk but am going on the view I held when I started drinking this evening. New Approach was HUGELY impressive today despite being beaten by a horse who was far more impressive (on the day), especially the way he came back back at the winner in what looked to me to possibly be one of the best guineas in recent times. Switch that horse off (and even bolger admitted that it is easy to switch a horse off at 1m4f, which lets face, it is..). in the derby and its game over. To me, what New Approach done today, and the way he done it, was harder than what would be expected at epsom, and without anything on the scene yet that is not passible at 1m4f then he should IMO take his chance.
I was hoping that the ground would be Gd-Fm today and Ravens Pass would run away with it but that was not to be the case, and looking at henry it is hard to know if he would have won anyway. It is hard to know whether henry will be at his best next time out, (I doubt it, but if so then he could be something truly special) and if not then I would easily fancy the ever consistent New Approach to reverse placings. I have always thought that New Approach looked on 2yo form to be an eclipse horse and I would love to see him go there (the irish derby would rule him out of that through close chronological proximity though (i think)) if he were foused and 100%, but I douibt that will happen. Henry is not going to the derbys and it would look at present, on todays form, as if he is due a stab at possibly the eclipse, against the elders after (PERHAPS) a run in the St James palace, if he is not retired before then (which may be likely).
To me, unless a strong derby horse emerges (soon) then I think that New Approach would be a guaranteed winner after todays run, purely through how afr he sits above his generation alone, but think that on the balance of things he should forget the irish version and contend the eclipse.
From what I have seen so far this season I think that the O’brien No1 for the derby is his dante focused "Kingdom Of Naples" and on 2yo form, reputation, other campaigning and other targets, he looks much less likely to succeed
Time will tell, an interesting couple of months coming up…lol
May 5, 2008 at 09:12 #161668It would’nt be a necessity for New Approach to front run in the Derby just so long as he could travel and be handy with the pace, i think he could take it up whenever Manning pushed the button, agree about him being more suited to the Curragh he will be the one to beat imo.

May 5, 2008 at 15:35 #161746I have a theory. There are but a few four star jockeys .
A four star jockey on a three star horse will always beat a three star jockey on a four star horse. When asked how he got beaten on a better horse a jockey who shall remain nameless said "Horses run faster for Willie" (Shoemaker).Does that make sense?May 5, 2008 at 16:02 #161752I have a theory. May 6, 2008 at 22:25 #161995The best jockeys will find an extra gear in their mount almost everytime if the horse is willing to be pushed to their limits.
I always tend to believe Christophe Soumillon, Darren Beadman, Robby Albarado, Yutaka Take, Anton Marcus are those who can achieve this.
And there’s a bloke who rides in Western Australia called Willie Pike – either a grandson or great nephew of the famous Jim Pike, rider of Phar Lap. I back horses just because Pike is on board. And I have made considerable profit.
May 6, 2008 at 22:31 #161999The Derby is an odd race though, better to see who wins next weeks Dante at York as that has been the best trial for the race.
Next few weeks though we will have small field trial races with horses unproven over further than 1m but come Derby Day with the hustle and bustle of Epsom some horses may have their season finished.
May 6, 2008 at 23:26 #162009At the minute the two Ive been liking for the derby have been Kingdom Of Naples and Curtain Call.
Curtain Call Im not too pleased with going to lingfield as it will probably be a facile victory and it will see him going very short, but I generally like to see a derby horse throw in a good race over 1m2f before going to epsom, and you would think with Curtain Call having some good speed to go for a decent 1m2f race, like the Dee stakes, Dante or Derrinstown, and for me it is a bit offputting that they are goign for the lingfield trial (which admittedly will throw up derby winners too at times).
Kingdom of Naples was reported on O’briens stable tour as going for the dante, which is a massive step for only a second start, which along with his debut and general support from 33s into what is now gradually becoming 16s, would make me think he’s well fancied, escpecially with o’briens others like Achill Island sat at 140-1 on betfair and this one being very prominent. O’brien has went through his derby contending runners this week in the racing post today and there was no mention of Kingdom Of Naples, but then there was no mention of Archipenko, Dylan Thomas or Septimus in the last two years before their impressive trial runs and no mention until very late, that Eagle Mountain and Horatio would be the number ones.
Stoute’s Dr Faustus and Barry Hill’s runner Foolin Myself in the Dee stakes are also interesting runners this week

May 7, 2008 at 19:35 #162183I backed Alessandro Volta the other day after Leopardstown…I see it has shortened a fair bit in the last two days. Has it been put up by a tipping line?
Due to run at Lingfield on Saturday…a preferable indication of its standing within the stable would be if it was kept for the Derrinstown on Sunday.May 7, 2008 at 22:07 #162226I’ve been backing Thewayyouare for a little while after he was supplemented.
Considering he is already a G1 winner and a half brother to Peeping Fawn I have no idea why he is twice the price of centennial who he gave a beating to last year. Given the filly’s improvement throughout last year you would expect him to improve and stay the trip.
Can someone help me out and tell me where I find the entries for the French 2000 guineas? I’m not sure whether he is entered this weekend – I believe they were thinking about starting him off there.

You can find them on the France Galop website. According to said website, he’s still declared and his entry is denoted “Part. Prob”. Now my French isn’t what it used to be, but I’d guess that means he’s an intended runner. All entries can be found here[/url:1ajto7mt], look for Longchamp’s meeting on Sunday.
May 7, 2008 at 22:26 #162231Thanks Friggo – As he’s Fabre’s only runner I would expect him to run.. Well hopefully!!! Although staying on for a place would be ideal as they may keep him to a mile if he wins!!!
May 7, 2008 at 22:29 #162232Is it known yet if Mulryan intends on running him at epsom?
May 7, 2008 at 22:35 #162235As he was supplemented and Coolmore own 75% of his breeding rights I would say there is every likelihood – Fabre is pretty keen to win it as well.
I wouldn;t say its definite but he’s no less likely than most of the field to get there.. I hope he does as if he wins it will be a good June!!!
May 8, 2008 at 02:43 #162244I am torn between two French prospects – Thewayyouare and Tamayuz. The latter won with a tough mindset in the Prix de Fontainebleau and his pedigree promises superior ability over 1m4f.
He is a serious stayer, though. And that’s why I liked his Fontainebleau win over the mile.
