As I read that Haradason is returning to Australia after his Group One win at Ascot I cannot help wondering just how valuable is Aidan O’Brien to the Coolmore breeding operation? In other words how much does each Group One victory add to the stud fees? For example how valuable is Marmalade this year as opposed to having been retired last year without his 3 Group One wins so far?
June 19, 2008 at 13:26 #169263Im sure hes not the only trainer to be able to prepare a reasonable performer to beat a fair bunch of group three performers in a group one race

I cant completly agree there, I think he is one of the best of the modern era without any shadow of a doubt. His career is still at its beginning, what will we be saying in 20 years time if he is still doing the same thing..
Also I think if it wasnt for some of his horses the derby wouldnt be the race it is today
He seems to get into a horses head and thats what makes him so special. I think he is priceless to Coolmore
June 19, 2008 at 13:32 #169267Why don’t you ask the self made billionaire who employs him?
June 19, 2008 at 13:32 #169268Clivex,mean and nasty response. Why the hostility? What about marmalade?and henry?I was looking for figures not feelings. Is today going to be another ugly day?
June 19, 2008 at 13:34 #169270Clivex is still SEETHING after making the aussie horse his banker lay of the week

no need to throw your toys out of the pram.If you cannot enlighten don’t blind me with ….I thought it would be an interesting subject for us poorer fans to mull over when the money runs out.June 19, 2008 at 13:45 #169275For example how valuable is Marmalade this year as opposed to having been retired last year without his 3 Group One wins so far?
You should be able to get an idea from the stud fees of their non Group 1 winners (e.g. Antonius Pius, Ivan Denisovich, Strategic Prince) versus those that have won a few without being superstars (Oratorio is the kind that jumps to mind).
June 19, 2008 at 13:45 #169276Sorry andyod, didnt mean it to sound like that.
I would say he’s worth his worth his weight in gold. Thats not to say Sir Michael wouldnt do a similar job but Aiden O Brien would probably tell you that himself.June 19, 2008 at 13:57 #169277You gave the example andyod
A poor one IMO
If you think that pointing out that DOM beat horses that werent group one performers in a group one race, is being "mean and nasty" to your hero..then so be it

Clivex mean and nasty???? never!!!…cue his nastiness in the Ronaldo topic!!!
June 19, 2008 at 14:02 #169281CR I suppose he should start putting on weight.
June 19, 2008 at 17:36 #8175Even if Tabor thinks he is, O’Brien is no genius just a very committed trainer who is always ready to train winners from Cheltenham to Ascot. And John Magnier;he is no genius but took on the wealthiest in the world and beat them at their own game ie being the best. Now Coolmore is just the best in the world and took on the Kentucky crowd and beat them also both in buying and stud making.Difficult not to admire them.
No money like the Aga Khan or the Arabs just a couple of bookmakers and a couple of horsemen getting together to do what they all love and going to the top of the ladder. Four Group Ones in three days is incredible. You don’t have to be a genius to do it just very, very good.I love the combination the English sports and the Irish horsemen in an arena they love; taking on the rest and winning. How Robert RIP would enjoy this week!June 19, 2008 at 18:07 #169333Its some achievement all right. Self made men, fair play to them.
June 19, 2008 at 22:06 #169367For the size of Ireland and our small population it’s great to see that we our right at the top of a sport which is worldwide and seems to be getting a wider audience, long may it continue
June 19, 2008 at 22:09 #169368Not sure whether Aidan is a genius or not, at the same time not bothered.
I would probably classify Magnier as a genius though with his skill as a breeder and the fact he has made Coolmore what it is.June 20, 2008 at 10:36 #169422Genius or not you cannot take away from O’Brien what he has achieved add to that he is a very pleasant, modest man.
I have a great deal of time and respect for him
