Will surely beat that in the breeders Cup. He ran a cracking trial for it and he must be in the first two or three surely. What an amazing horse he is. Like the great St Nicholas Abbey has incredible durability and even on a surface he hated ran a cracker. Always been one of my faves.
Yeah you right Mickey, he will probably get it just for turning up in that race. Also been entered for the Japan Cup after, more globetrotting coming up. 30 could be on the cards now i reckon
October 21, 2017 at 22:55 #1322897Not sure about thirty but think he will get two or three more. I think what makes it more remarkable is that I don’t think this is the strongest team of horses he’s had. He mind you to think John magnier wasn’t one for keeping horses beyond three or four. I hope the likes of winter, hydrangea, roll poly, Highland reel and order of St George stay in training.
October 21, 2017 at 23:16 #1322904I don’t follow flat relentlessly but I think it’s a strong team in terms of breadth without there being an abolsute star
coolmore can be difficult to warm to but it has to be said that he’s running th horses extensively without the tiresome fear of the occasional defeat. That’s a real positive in a game where cotton wool had become too prevalent. Also I do think it’s been a strong positive that the operation has veered away from the past growing general emphasis on pure speed In Breeding and racing. Correct me if I’m wrong
I’ve grown to appreciate more and more how he’s a master of getting the horses in the right frame of mind for any race.
October 21, 2017 at 23:19 #1322905I understand Winter has been retired, Mickey. Not confirmed but reliable sources.
Fair chance the rest will stick around though – Derek Smith said today that Order Of St George would be back for the Gold Cup next year. No reason not to keep the others going if still sound and enthusiastic.
Just guessing but I’d expect Caravaggio and Churchill to be packed off to stud now. They’re desperate for Scat Daddy blood and Churchill is obviously a bit of a fraud and only losing value from here on. Hard to know what to expect with Highland Reel – he has the constitution to keep going for another year but might make himself too valuable to race if he binks a Japan Cup or BC Turf in the next few months.
They’ll still have a bit of almost everything next year. 1-3 good older fillies, 10-15 very good 3yo colts, at least 3 top 3yo fillies and a top stayer. They will look a little bare in the sprinting ranks so it wouldn’t surprise me if they buy something in from another stable – Heartache or Barraquero would presumably be gettable for the right money. Maybe even Lady Aurelia could be switched to O’Brien since they own a good chunk of the filly already and tried to pull off something similar with Acapulco.

Lady A will stay in USA, Acapulco was poor when transfered. No clenbuterol officially allowed in Ireland.
Value Is EverythingOctober 22, 2017 at 09:40 #1322940Pretty harsh, GT. Hard to say she was poor! Won her only start for AOB (in foal) after drifting wildly in the market. I’m sure she would have come on for that if she had stayed sound. An inconclusive experiment imo.

Does anyone else think that Spirit of Valor could turn out to be a top sprinter? I’d love to see him have a go at the turf sprint at the Breeders Cup.
October 22, 2017 at 18:47 #1323017The big change is keeping colts in training past three even when they haven’t won out in a group one. The likes of Highland reel would have gone to stud at 3 a few years ago but with the stallion ranks swollen with the likes of Australia, camelot and gleneagles then coolmore are now realising there is sense in letting horses continue racing.
October 22, 2017 at 23:43 #1323059does this group 1 record count just for British races, or can O’brien add to it in the breeders cup?
October 22, 2017 at 23:54 #1323061Any group 1 including overseas in the calendar year, so yes the Breeders Cup is in play

Yes, Bobby Frankel trained just outside of Scunthorpe.

Nathan, all the statistics i put up here are from http://www.aidanobrienfansite.com/
It’s not a forum or commercial site but the guy who runs it is very thorough on those type of things. The twitter site also gives some indications as to stable running plans. I am not connected with the site or trying to promote it and hope putting the link here is ok
October 23, 2017 at 14:12 #1323137Nice link botchy, thanks for that

He got 23 in 2008, as he did in 2001 which was the world record until Bobby Frankel surpassed it.
