I’ve always been a big fan of Wholestone and couldn’t believe he was 5/1 yesterday for today.
Anyone know what the plans are for him?
If he’s a fair price for this, I’ll play him in a multi. Not a fan of the race though I’ll be honest. Never liked the race and think the Neptune and Surpeme are far better quality wise every year.
January 28, 2017 at 22:24 #1284367Just watched west approach and wholestone races again and there is a lot to consider!
Firstly wholestone, he did have the run of the race but he made a bad mistake half way round and lost a few lengths plus momentum also I rate William Henry a lot as he was nickys big supreme fancy a couple years back when he got injured. So from that I am very impressed with wholestone who seems to have improved every run.
Secondly west approach, this horse have them a bit of a start and was very wide and never really ridden to have the chance to win IMO. Was far too much to do. He put a couple of slow jumps in but I’m a big fan of horses who previously race very wide and then next run hiwpfully race closer to the rails, very often seen big improvement and I don’t mind horses who make the odd mistake because again it’s something to improve on.Overall I would say that today I was equally impressed with both performances for very different reasons. But they will definitely get my backing in the Albert Bartlett as I often do 2 horses per race at the festival.

I think they are both better than Death Duty who is just stupidly priced at poxy 5/2. Embarrassing that he’s that short.
The other two at 10s I’ve just seen are both value for a place at least.
January 28, 2017 at 22:33 #1284377Another question I’d pose, Gordon, is…will West Approach actually run in this? He’s run outside of novice company on his last 2 runs, so I just wonder if they’ll stick him in the Stayers…
He’s still a Novice,Yes I know his half brother ‘Thistlecrack’ was the same before I said he’d win the King george but as much as West approach has that fast improving gene he will stay in the Albert Bartlett and win it Zark…TAPK knows you know that.

I had £2 at 46 he wins the Stayers, would hate for him to win that and not profit from being a fan of his!
Anyway, as I said, let’s just settle for a RFC in the Albert B. Death Duty’s participation ensures we’ll get a nice price ;)
January 29, 2017 at 02:05 #1284414Just rewatched Wholestone’s win and it’s really a godly performance. Giving them all weight and he’s given them a thrashing. Only one’s not completed and it looks like being a reliable piece of form – plenty of LTO winners were running here. He was much the best only a trip short of optimal. If he can sustain that pace for an extra 4f on better ground, he’ll win, simple as that.
January 29, 2017 at 15:36 #1284531Ruby was 30 length behind and detached for most of that race and gets beat 3 length by 2 Grade 1 winners
Footpad wins the Champion Hurdle yeah?
January 29, 2017 at 16:05 #1284550I still think West Approach has the beating of Wholestone over 3 miles off level weights. Only beaten 1/2 length when giving 3ib and lacking race fitness over course and distance in October lest we forget. The worry is that connections would rather have a crack at the Stayers.

Stop panicking about that Charles…West approach will definitely stay the novice route this year.

Same connections who ran their horse in a King George and not the Feltham though…

Yes and thats not been proven as the greatest idea now has it?…’Thistlecrack’ still shows novice tendancies.
West Approach ran like a pro yesterday,he’s next years Stayers hurdle winner for sure.January 29, 2017 at 17:00 #1284575Loads to like about both discussed horses yesterday – they seem to love Cheltenham and they’ll both go on better ground as well. I’ll be looking at a bit of value with the Mullins trio of Kemboy, Penhill and Augusta Kate though. Penhill’s experience might be my slight preference

Well I’d say it was a very good idea to run him in the Cleeve rather than the 2m 4f novice hurdle, wouldn’t you?

Thats because West Approach is a 3 miler Zark and thats why this race is ideal.
January 29, 2017 at 19:00 #1284604No love for poor Death Duty here?
Certain to appreciate the step up in distance and his form will probably look rock solid by the time he lines up on the Friday.
His last 2 races he has raced against the best of Ireland over 20F – Monalee, Augusta Kate & Invitation Only. If any of those three ran in novice hurdles in the UK this year they would all of been odds on to win any race.
I really think he is going to be a star for some years to come.

‘Death Duty’ is the subject of a Bookmakers over-reaction,he should never be 2/1 fav for this,he has the look of a dour staying chaser to me,gritty but definitely wants a soft surface for that very round action,if that horse has a change of gear I’ve not seen it.Both West Approach and ‘Wholestone’ will have his moves well covered on the bridle.

100% agree
I’m prepared to go on record and say DD at 2/1 is the worst bet of the festival antepost in my eyes
January 29, 2017 at 20:20 #1284616What price do you think DD should be out of interest guys ?
