April 25, 2026 at 16:18 #1764837Totally sickening to see … I’m not sure what happened – I know it was the water jump but there isn’t a lip to it anymore? … it was horrible to see how badly injured he was and I turned away quickly praying they would get to him quickly to help him … much sympathy to all his connections and the stable staff who were celebrating their season just a short time before this happened. I believe his lad is called Steve and I hope he knows how much we all hurt for him too …
April 25, 2026 at 17:36 #1764842Couldn’t see it clearly due to the angle from drone footage but he appeared to take a false step when attempting to take off far too early – front end came back down on the fence and he ploughed through it. He might have been injured just a few yards before the fence.
I can’t begin to imagine what the yard is going through today – the ultimate glory ruined by the tragic, horrific loss to one of their favourites and one of the most wonderful and universally appreciated stories of the National Hunt season
Rest in peace, Thistle Ask, and my sincere and complete heartfelt condolences to the yard and owners.
April 25, 2026 at 19:49 #1764850Racing Post: Thistle Ask was leading the field when he made a mistake at the seventh fence and unseated Harry Skelton. He was found to have fractured his shoulder when assessed on course by vets and could not be saved.
I actually thought he’d injured his back or pelvis as he seemed to plough through the fence’s structure with his hind legs – though I quickly turned my head away when I realised he was badly injured …
April 25, 2026 at 21:10 #1764859Heartbroken for this lovely horse who has come so far for this to happen.
On a day that should have been filled with celebration the loss of Thistle Ask has really hit hard.
RIP beautuful boy 💔
