Think this is one of the most fascinating races I’ve ever known!

Native River won me a lot of money this spring. I will stay loyal with him a 7/4. I think Might Bite will have to go all out early, because I can’t see him beating Native River in a close battle. Can’t see Thistlecrack and Clan des Obeaux get involved. I think Bristol de Mai will run a good race, but he just isn’t the same level as Native River and Might Bite.

First race at Haydock 1.5 seconds faster than Racing Post Standard.
It’s at least Good ground, if not firmer.

I’ve backed the Politologue/If the cap fits double quite heavily today. I’ve also added a treble with Native River at 3-1. Like DBR, I won a lot of money on Native River last spring. I love both horses, but NR is my favourite NH horse running, he epitomises the sport. Might Bite should win today under these conditions, but when you have two horses, and one has the biggest will too win you will ever see, he just can’t go unbacked in some way at 3-1.

I have Clan Des Obueax in the ten to follow, he’s a very good horse for this season, but I just can’t see him dealing with these two today.

Is there such a thing as a horse with a “will to win”, Naus’?

Yes Ginge, watch Native River, he has it with bells on top. Animals which are close too humans, like too please. Certain horses know they are good, they want too please is the common theme, as well as having the right physical attributes.

Might Bite was favourite for the GC. I love him, but put him in a battle with NR up Cheltenham’s hill, only one winner every time. Might not happen today, but he’s a tiger in a battle!

Coneygree has it too, did you see him battle for third when he got passed last week? Might Bite would not have. He needs too do it on the bridle pretty much. Give me the ‘battler’ every time over 3m+.

Take human sentiment out of it. Horses are pack animals – as in the wild – some are natural leaders and some followers. ie Some horses have a natural need (in their minds) to lead. Native River has one of the strongest and won’t let any horse past if he can possibly help it. It’s not a will to win, it’s a will to be in front. Along with crowd noise, it is also why some horses idle in front and some need exaggerated waiting tactics – because they do not want to lead.

I think you’re being a bit ‘cold’ about it all there myself Ginge. Horses are fairly intelligent animals in the general scheme of things. Domesticated animals love too please, it’s not human sentiment, it’s fact mate. It’s how a human trains a dog, if the dog did not want too please, it would not do what was being asked. When horses are broken, man is training them too do a certain task. Yes they love too run, they all do. But some of them want too please their human jockey more than others. That is the will too win which I speak of. Some horses don’t try at all when the chips are down, some will try till exhaustion.

Yes, there is a will to please and it’s why some are more amenable than others. But that is not (by far) the main reason a horse wants to lead/remain in front (what you call a “will to win”).

Some natural follower horses will do whatever a rider wants everywhere else, but still don’t want to lead.

We will just have to agree too differ Ginge, you’re wrong though :yahoo:

Getting back to the Betfair. These new massive fences at Haydock are going to change this race a bit!

Vast majority of horses have a particular way they like to run.
Some need to lead and if they don’t they’ll either pull their way to the front or sulk.
Some need to race prominently, either leading or with a clear view of the front.
Some like to track pace or at least not want too many horses in front of them and might get claustrophobic with too many horses around them.
Some don’t mind being further back, as long as they’re on the arrowhead (with a clear view) on the outer. (if they’re on the inner, surround it they won’t show their form).
Some love being surrounded and/or the rail in mid-div.
Some need a fair bit of room but don’t like leading. These need to be held up or (if it’s very bad) dropped out the back.

Native River’s form improved when Richard Johnson took over, but along with firing his mount at fences the thing he did was to change tactics to front running. Strongly suspect that if Native River were to be ridden in amongst horses (even in a stamina testing race) he would not be as eager to please and might even sulk.

This – along with stamina/speed – is why imo evaluating pace in the race (who’s it going to suit) is so vital in form study.

Oh Ginge, okay I agree then lol… I just can’t stop winning money right now! Backed Black Mischief quite heavily in that Haydock race. Single, and a double with Braqueur D’Or later. Looked away two out, thought he’s cooked… When you’ve trod in something, you’ve trod in something!

Hard to see past Clan Des Obeaux here. Bristol De Mai should get 2nd though Thistlecrack may give him a run for it.

Native River should beat Might Bite in the race for 4th and 5th or 3rd and 4th if Thistlecrack has gone at the game.

An incredible 5 runner race. The race of the season.

Clan Des Obeaux could turn out to be 2nd.in this seasons gold cup behind The Elegant One

Good move by Tizzard.running his 2nd and 3rd best gold cup horses against Clan Des Obeaux.

Will give him a great idea of how far Elegant Escale can win the gold cup.by.

Hold my hand up as I wasn’t expecting that performance on that ground – needs to go on to prove he can now do it elsewhere
