Fingers crossed for you Calyx backers.
March 5, 2019 at 11:08 #1399791Thanks for the link Kev
.
For me this is no surprise, and I am hopeful and confident Gosden will decide right.
As I said earlier, Abdullah will probably help him with that
Calyx will soon shorten and come the day he will show who the real class act is
March 5, 2019 at 20:11 #1399849Looks like Gosdens subtle way of telling punters this horse will be aimed at the Commonwealth cup to me.

March 5, 2019 at 23:55 #1399870That’s what you wish Nathan, and I can imagine why:
The idea of Calyx showing up would probably give the TDH backers nightmares and cold sweat
The wisest and fairest thing for Gosden to do would be to give Calyx at least a 7F prep race,
cos training impressions are not the same. He would lose nothing and gain much, and in Abdullah’s shoes I would kick Gosden’s butt as long as he agrees to do so
March 6, 2019 at 08:26 #1399879Not my wish Hein
yes, TDH carries more of my cash but I’m also on Calyx at +20/1
TDH also gave me the “WOW” factor watching him so I have a soft spot for him too, he’s my new Canford Cliffs or Toronado
but
I’m just calling it as I see it
I would love them both to line up, I think TDH would be too darn hot for Calyx personally but will be happy to hold my hands up if I’m wrong and will be 1st on here to say well done to those on the winner whoever it maybe.
Last year I was on Clemmie at 33’s, 25’s down for the 1000 Guineas, she was a strong winter fav but never got a run. I move on quickly in horse racing as losers is more than per for the course.
Gosden making noises about sprinting would have a few alarm bells ringing in my head that he’s not confident at this stage that Calyx will get the mile but maybe he will hose up on reappearance and it will be all systems go.
Either way I wish you good luckGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
March 6, 2019 at 09:00 #1399881Thank you Nathan, I wish you best of luck too
To be honest I had a few drinks last night so my formulations might have been a bit harsh?!
I must admit that Gosden`s statement can be seen both ways, the only thing we can really say now is that time will tell, que sera sera
So far I only dream of Calyx going one better than his dad here, but if it really will happen?
And with the butt kicking-part I meant that I hope Mr. Abdullah will insist on running here.
So, this sounds better to me, I hope to others too..March 6, 2019 at 09:36 #1399882Based on what we currently know, it would be a really poor show for Gosden not to run Calyx in the 2000 Guineas. If he’s genuinely concerned about the trip, to Hein’s point, then run him in a 7f trial and see how it goes. If he races through the line and finishes his race of well then he has to go for the Guineas. For a trainer who hasn’t won the 2000 Guineas you think he would be more keen. There’s nothing wrong in being double handed in it. Just speak to Aidan O’Brien. If Calyx underperforms in the 7f trial then, for sure, perhaps re-route him to the Commonwealth Cup.
It has to be noted both Calyx’s sire and damn both won at 1m. In fact they both won at 1m on soft ground i.e. the argument about Calyx not lasting the mile looks weak to me.
To jack’s point, what we don’t know is if Calyx retains his ability but you would have to say the thrust of the article suggests Gosden thinks he has.
March 6, 2019 at 10:15 #1399891Thank you very much CNC, I agree 100%
March 6, 2019 at 10:37 #1399895Unfortunately Hein, whilst we have our views, the real question is: who is the decision maker and what will they do?
If the answer to that question is Gosden, then I think he will duck it and send Calyx sprinting, hence the article. Let’s hope that’s not the case.
March 6, 2019 at 17:49 #1399948Precisely CNC, this is the real danger, as Gosden will surely be under strong pressure.
The public learns from the media that he has the horse of the century in his hands,
and what if Gosden already knows that TDH is not as good as the extreme hype makes people think?
And if he furthermore knows that Calyx is the better horse?
If he then decides like a bloody politician, he would stick to keeping them apart to not letting TDH’s bubble burst early and telling the public this trash about Calyx being a sprinter without ckecking it. So ideally he could show that he is a real great trainer by not surrendering to the pressure and deciding for the sake of both horses, but I agree with you that in the real world this is at least doubtful.March 6, 2019 at 18:36 #1399955Based on pedigree(sire/mare) Calyx looks like he should stay a mile we are yet to know whether Kingman’s prodigy will stay.
I have no bet in the race yet, but I have said I have doubts just in his running style and buzziness, maybe that was him still being green.I would also side with Nathan on the Gosden interview, why bang on about sprinting?
March 6, 2019 at 18:52 #1399957Gosden talks alot of plop at times and would get on well with the wenches on Loose Women but even Gosden if he knew that Calyx was better than Too Darn Hot over the mile and that TDH was not as good as the hype then he wouldn’t be talking Sprinting options for Calyx.
Why is Gosden looking for evidence by running in a prep over 7f to see if he gets the mile.? Because he’s not certain the horse will get it despite the breeding, he should have some idea if the horse is an out and out miler with the experience he has and the mile division would be open for a horse like Calyx as TDH will probably step up in trip anyway as a natural progression afterwards with even a possibly tilt at the Derby..
I wouldn’t think Gosden would be too worried if TDH had his bubble burst, it happened to Kingman and even Enable lost a race. Same if Calyx lost, I think the only thing that will make him split them is if he believes that Calyx doesn’t truly get the mile.
I hope both run as it would be a mouthwatering clash.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
March 6, 2019 at 20:58 #1399968Thank you Nathan, you banished some of my worries.
If JG really decides based on sporty reasons and fairness, I will be able to accept it.
The best way to find out would really be a 7f prep race, and I hope he gives Calyx this chance.
Of course I agree with you that I would love to see them clash then, not only cos otherwise I could tear my ticket
, but also for enjoying this highlight.March 6, 2019 at 21:55 #1399984A couple of things about the Gosden pair. First of all with Calyx would you back a horse who is coming back from injury and who hasnt run for a least 10 months (if he goes for a trial) 11 if not? I wouldn’t. 2nd he is by a first season sire who you have no idea how his progeny are to train on from 2 to 3. They have already said TDH is going for the greenham so either they take each other on there or Calyx goes for a mile trial which would be a big no no for me
With TDH he was a very good 2yr no doubt but that will of been 6/7 months ago, some horses train on and get better some stay the same,so who knows with this one. The main thing that would put me of backing these pair is im not convinced that Gosden has that touch to train a guineas winner to be ripe on the day. He has had a few decent chances but has never hit the mark
March 6, 2019 at 22:07 #1399992Cant say i disagree with that newyork, i love gosden as a trainer but not for the guineas and ill probably try and get TDH beat although hes definitely the best horse in the race..
March 6, 2019 at 23:31 #1400010Gosden should allow Calyx to run a 7F prep race before making a call. Let TDH run in Craven and Calyx in Greenham and then decide. If all 3 -TDH, Calyx and Ten Sovereigns turn up, it will be the best Guineas of the last 5 years. Then there are horses like Quorto, Jash, Madhmoon, Magna Grecia, Advertise…wow wow wow. Cant wait for the day
March 7, 2019 at 00:09 #1400022Have to agree with Ham and NY1 about Gosden and the Guineas ,he’s never won it and only won The Craven once in 1993. His horses seem to peak later in the Season. I would however like to see Too Darn Hot run in The Craven and then take on Calyx & Co in The Guineas. Craven winner Masar took that route before winning The Derby.

Good reports coming in regarding Persian King who is entered for the race but he also has the French 2000 Guineas as an option. Also have to respect Quorto and any Godolphin horse fit from a winter in Dubai.
Still haven’t decided on any particular horse to back for the Guineas myself yet, but enjoying the conversation and hopefully we’ll get to the bottom of Gosden’s plans for Calyx and TDH.
Can almost guarantee the Grand Master of Newmarket will come up smelling of roses.
