So many horses have lost their lives this week, heartbreaking for all concerned.
Here in Memorials at least we can pay respects for all the brave horses that have sadly passed on, whether on the racecourse, point to point or much loved pets. RIPThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...Can’t see what all the fuss is about, Johnny Murtagh is
as good if not a better jockey than Kieran Fallon.
Fallon is a free agent and should be able to choose which horse he wishes to ride. He did give fair warning of his intentions, it’s not as if he jumped off at the last minute.
The owner rightly feels let down, but let the horse do the talking..Kieran could have made the worse decision of his career.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...SOBEA STAR…Chestnut Filly by Soviet Star – trained by Pam Sly
Sadly broke down and fatally injured in the 8.40 at Ripon tonight.
RIP sweet girl, you gave your all tonight for the sport that we love and some call cruel, but we know that you were loved and never ill treated, hopes and dreams were with you tonight but they were not to be.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...They are running on UK courses, in UK races for UK racegoers, they should be named in English. If they are going to be campaigned at Meydan or Abu Dhabi then call them something in Arabic.
It’s a disgrace, these Arabs come over here and buy our horses and take our prize money and can’t even give them proper English names. Send ’em back to their own country if they want to choose names in their own language I say. Lets hope ‘Er Majesty, gawd bless her, wins the Derby with a good old English horse this year.
That good old English horse was gifted to ‘Er Maj’ by Sheik Mohammed who a few years back was ill advised and sold the Dam of Derby Winner Nashwan (Height of Fashion) to Sheik Hamdam for £1,000,000.
Now I think the Sheik (Mohammed), by way of a thank you, has gifted The Queen with a possible Derby winner who’s dam sire is none other than Bustino the Sire of Height of Fashion.Funny old world
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...I love the Arab names and trying to figure out what they might mean in English.
The Arab naming of two fillies a couple of years back caused some confusion when the fillies Habaayib and Hibaayeb were running, one trained by Ed Dunlop and the other by Clive Brittain. My only real gripe is with owners, obviously with more money than sense, giving beautiful thoroughbreds stupid names.
There can’t be a worse name for a filly than the 2yo as yet unraced trained by Richard Hannon (see Steve Taplin’s 2yo book) that has been named MANMANMANMAN now I’m looking forward to Richard Hoyles calling that one home.

Gaelic names are sometimes just as hard to prounonce such as
SAOIRSE ABU – Freedom Forever
FINSCEAL BEO – Living LegendTEOFILO (an Italian boy’s name meaning Friend of God)
HALICARNASSUS – An ancient Greek City
but they have all have meaning as do the Arab horses, the quirky names can seem fun at the time, but beautiful thoroughbreds deserve much better..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...What a ride he gave NANTON today in the Zetland at Redcar. You would have thought he would have needed wings to get through the wall of horses in front of him, but Danny Tudhope was as cool as a cucumber waiting for the right moment to thread Nanton to the outside to come with a blistering run to pip the battling Prince of Johann and Desert Romance.
Nanton is such a battler and Jim Goldie well deserved this win for keeping the old boy in such good nick all these years.
Well done to old favourite NANTON up and comping Daniel Tudhope and respected trainer Jim Goldie, what a great race and what a great price 25-1

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...It would have to be LOCHSONG for me but let’s not forget the amazing grey sprinter
PARIS HOUSE, trained by Jack Berry, who in 1993 won both the Palace House Stakes (Lochsong 3rd)and the Temple Stakes (Lochsong 4th) before going down to Lochsong by just a head in the King George and then 2nd to ‘herself’ again this time in the Nunthorpe.Never quite the class of Lochsong and Dayjur, Paris House was always exciting to watch, an out and out sprinter.
He only ran unplaced 4 times in his 21 race career..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...Mtoto was the first horse to steal my heart in the 1980’s for his sheer bravery and determination.
The saddest thing was that he didn’t win the Arc de Triomphe having been completely boxed in with nowhere to go, he came with a wet sail to challenge Tony Bin and failed by just a neck to get the better of him.
However, he then went on to sire Shaamit who won the Derby in 1996 but who sadly died aged only 8 years old in 2001…RIP dear Mtoto
would also like to include here
Shaamit and
Alec Stewart
Mtoto’s trainer who sadly died in 2004 after a battle with cancer.Would just like to quote this poem that is the inscription that stands with a statue of Mill Reef at the National Stud, Newmarket.
Mill Reef’s statue looks over the paddock in which he used to run free, and which most recently was used by Silver Patriach another who sadly left us in 2009.MTOTO one of the greatest middle distance thoroughbreds of the 1980’s….this is for you:-
Princes, Lords, Commoners all sang my praise.
In victory or defeat I played my part.
Remember me, all men who love the Horse,
If hearts and spirits flag in after days;
Though small, I gave my all. I gave my heart."– Paul Mellon, The Gimcrack Spirit speech 1970 –
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...Tangerine Trees
all the way for me,who knows how much he has improved since winning his last race at Newmarket keeping up the momentum on the undulating Rowley Mile leading from start to finish.
There’s no uphill finish tomorrow and he’s going to feel like he’s been let loose..
Each way price around 11/1 at the moment.Overdose
has never won on Good to Firm so that’s a negative for me although if he’s as good as they say it shouldn’t stop him..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...Hi Des..Columbus is holding out well up there and well done to all with winners last week..it wasn’t easy.

Reserve: 2.35 York ….. Chachamaidee
Only winner
Eddie D… I’m hoping that Tangerine Trees will make all as he did at Newmarket LTO, so impressive, he is such an exciting sprinter.
Overdose has never won on Good to Firm so that’s a negative.Good luck all..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...Fantastic book compiled by Steve Taplin, just got my 2011 copy.
I think you’ve mentioned most of the good trainers such as Hannon, Gosden, Candy etc., and another whose judgement I do trust is Roger Charlton who I will forgive for getting it totally wrong when Genki dotted up at Newmarket time before last (said he would improve for the run…ouch
)The very worst and I don’t know why he even includes him in the book Mark Johnston, he never gives any trainer comments, IMO he doesn’t allow his best horses to be entered in the book and he along with a few other top trainers have no star ratings for their horses which means that Steve Taplin does not have enough information about the 2yo’s to appraise them.
A case of keeping their cards close to their chests I think. But out of them all I have to say that Henry Cecil is the most honest and frank about his horses chances and he has one or two nice 2yo’s biding their time at Warren Place at the moment..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 18, 2011 at 23:10 in reply to: Female commentators – some condescending stuff on ATR Forum #356030All good sports for having a go but personally wouldn’t want to listen to commentary by any of them at this stage of their new careers
Missed the break by seconds, didn’t know the horses names,
S Maxwell said ‘Richard Hughes was nicely covered up on Paco Boy’ when he was blocked in on the rails, full of running with nowhere to go.
(totally biased opinion as I backed him that day
)
Thanks goodness it wasn’t the Lincoln Handicap it would have been all over before they’d decided which horse, ridden by whatever jockey in the colours of whosoever trainer had taken up the lead in the first furlong…Jac

sad to say I don’t think there are that many others that could do it justice.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...That a 4 x 4 rule be adopted for 2 years olds.
Stating that they can only run 4 times in their first year with at least 4 weeks gap between each race.
This would go some way to limit the damage to their newly formed limbs and vertebrae..Jac
Totally agree with Thisthatandtother’s answer and in an ideal World Mr. Wilson’s also.
Have noticed a lot of 3yo races lately where the horse is having it’s first run and hope to see many more.
Too many good horses are ruined by greedy owners wanting a corporate day out i.e. Ascot and demanding their horses runs on ground that is not suitable.
I definitely applaud trainers such as Roger Charlton who agonises over two of his horses in particular Clowance and Cityscape who need cut in the ground, they are constantly being declared and withdrawn waiting for the skys to open.
Patience is a necessary virtue in the ownership of the racehorse.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...- AuthorPosts
