Well,
Let’s face it…the GN has been a bit unlucky the last couple of years. But, lets not throw out the baby with the bathwater. The GN is one of the greatest spectacles in the world.
It is also very rare for horses to be hurt in jump racing…I realize everyone has their own idea of what that is…
However, you can go to the jumps several times a year and never see a horse put down.
Lets get real here and back this GN like there is no tomorrow. Now is the time to support the great sport… Not get timid and give in to people who profess to love horses, but want to wipe the sport out. This could only have a very tragic outcome for the horses…
and mankind….as far as I’m concerned.
I absolutley agree, if the the GN is banned then you might as well ban all equine sports. A show jumping friend recently returned from a big competition abroad where 2 horses died. No body uttered a word! There are more fatal injuries occuring when horses are turned out to grass than anywhere else.
Wetherby is fantastic.
I like to go in the middle of the course and over to the back straight. Watching horse pick the fences on the far side of the course is superb viewing.
Although I remember Valley Henry falling about 8 years ago, when odds on and carrying a rather large sum of Blunkett’s money on it. Horrible fall too.
Ponty is tremendous for an evening meeting.
Least favourite track is probably Doncaster – since the revamp. Hitler-esque stewards who don’t let you breathe, bad viewing areas, and full of drunken Yorkshireman.
Of which sometimes I include myself!
Whats worse than drunken Yorkshiremen? Drunken scousers and thats why i cant put Aintree as my number one. So it has to be Wetherby. You must remember that Doncaster is in South Yorkshire where you cant tell the difference between sober and drunk.
I cant believe I shall never see him again carting his handler round the parade ring at Aintree in the parade of champions. Rest in peace big man.

I was there when Decent Fellow won two years ago.
An absolutely awesome experience, I’d recommend that any jumps fan who hasn’t been already makes the trip – coupled with a few days’ sightseeing and boozing in Prague it’s a fantastic holiday.
Hey I was there that year it was a fantastic weekend.
I couldn’t believe how cheap everything was. Stew and dumplings 60p you can’t get a soggy salmonella burger at Aintree for less than a fiver these days.
But your’e right BennyB it is an ‘awesome experience’.
Hi guys.
Which are your favourite jump horses ever? ? ?
Istabraq has to be up there for me, along with Best Mate.
Now a days, my favourite horse by a long, long way is My Way De Solzen.
Thanks.
It has to be Dessie for me, im a sucker for the greys, but he has such courage and the way he stood off at his fences, He put in some of the most spectacular leaps ive ever seen. Nowadays Denman and Kauto and good old War of Attrition, such a cool name, glad to see him back
Im so glad BBs going to be ok, what he shame he never got to win a big one. Happy retirement old boy.

Thanks for that racingirluk, i do hope Shakie is doing well.
yes, just got an email about his retirement from a german website that knows more about English horses than we do…no details of what the old boy’s up to though; [possibly standing in front of a mirror all day singing ‘I’m gorgeous’!]
Ha Ha, a freind of mine has his half brother, a year older and thats what he does!
hi guys, just wondered if any of you will be attending Newmarket on wednesday/thursday this week? i’m lookin certain to be there at least one day!!
daiesy
No not me, flat racing dosnt float me boat, anyway in the summer i race the whippets…….they allways beat me!!!

Thank you folks for your info. Aw Royal Shakies injured, yes he was allways beautifully turned out. And ill allways love him for his 25/1 win at Aintree in 2004 i think it was. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
Here some great private pics on the 2008 National:
Superb pictures, well done. Thanks for sharing them.

He didnt like his blanket, did you notice how he calmed down once they took it off
Yep I’d say either the Lord Derby or Sefton stand are pretty good all round. We were a bit worried being only able to get the "lower" tier it wouldn’t be as good a view but I’d possibly say from my angle in that I enjoy taking photos it was probably better as my zoom didn’t have to zoom quite so far! However book early!
Yeah I allways book early. Im practically sat on the computer end of july waiting for the website to say ‘tickets on sale’, sad or what!
Emerald, im glad you found the Lord Derby stand ok, i was thinking i might try it next year. By the way on Old Roan chase day usually coincides with a Halloween theme. If i never seen another child in a skeleton suit itl be too soon!
I’ve always thought the notion that horses ‘know’ when they’ve won to be ludicruous.
A horse has no more knowledge that it’s past a certain point on the racecourse quicker than the other horses and that this accomplishemnt somehow means something than I have about particle physics.
We had this greyhound who knew where the finishing line was. He’ kid everyone he was dossing then in a few strides he was there, race won. Well I like to think he knew where it was anyway.

i got to stroke him after the race

How jammy are you, lovely photo. Did you see King Johns Castle? Awesom fella isnt he?
