Come on Mr. Ghost,
Graeham was trying to warn punters it might be a bit firm for him. He was not saying it was unsafe. After all some of Bewleys Berry’s best form was on good going. Believe official was good, good-firm places. If you moan about connections saying such things then every trainer, jockey and owner might as well remain silent and not tell viewers about any negitives. It could have happened to any horse.Johnson is not one of my favourite trainers by any means, but to blame him and Wylie for running the horse is rediculous.Ginge
Value Is EverythingApril 27, 2008 at 20:50 #160264I love watching racing from there but its an interesting point about horses getting injured at Sandown. Feathard Lady & Kicking King are two other horses whose careers were ended/compromised after running there.

Like I said, he would have gotten away with it most of the time but I thought it a bit risky running a horse on unsuitably fast ground (in their opinion, not mine), especially a large heavy-topped horse like BB.
I don’t wish to be an after-timer on this but the attitude was "what the hell, we’re here now".
You may think it ridiculous I think that it wasa regrettable decision that was wrong and would still have been wrong even if he’d come back safe and sound.April 27, 2008 at 21:03 #160271I’m sorry, PAULCS, but in no way did Sandown contribute to the subsequent failure and/or retirement of the horses you mention.
Kicking King had underperformed at both Punchestown and Haydock (hammered by Kingscliff, which shows just what kind of form he was in) before being made to fight by Monkerhostin in the King George, and Feathard Lady had won the Christmas Hurdle in emphatic fashion before injuring herself at home.
April 27, 2008 at 21:11 #160273But Bewleys acts well on good.
So it was not that much different to his ideal conditinons.
It was quite reasonable to allow him to take his chance. If he has a rounded, pounding action it would be wrong to run, but he has a good action. It is not as if he had not run on a firm surface before, ran o.k. when fourth at Ascot on reappearance last season. Came to no harm there, being 2nd in the Beecher only three weeks later. Don’t know where you get the "heavy-topped" from? Timeform describe him as lengthy, workmanlike. I saw the same interview and got no impression of attitude. Of course it was a regrettable decision to run, knowing what happened but that is aftertiming.
If every trainer took a horse out of a race where the going is minutely different to its supposed ideal conditions, there would be more non-runners than runners.Ginge
Value Is EverythingApril 27, 2008 at 21:32 #160275has anyone heard any more as to how the horse is?
April 27, 2008 at 22:05 #160277As soon as I got to Sandown yesterday, I walked the back straight, and I thought it was pretty fast. I contacted Christian to say I was worried it might be too firm for Fiepes, but Christian had a look himself and said the ground was fine. Also, if you noticed, there were places where the turf is flying up, and Jamie also said the ground was quick, but I can tell you that pretty much everything came back sound in our race.
Remarkably, I actually missed the ‘Whitbread’ (as I’ll always call it!!), as Christian had sent me on an errand, but I’ve looked at the video, and the way Bewleys Berry stopped reminded me of a horse I co-owned in Germany called Steinle. In that instance, Steinles career was ended by ‘severe tendon trouble’, when he stopped in very similar fashion. Now I’m not a vet, but I’m wondering if Bewleys Berry has got the same problem. I’ve not heard anything official, but maybe it’s the same injury.
With regards to connections being at fault for running the horse, well Lennon was just behind us in the Celebration Chase, and if anything, his ability on that ground was as much questionable as that of Bewleys Berry. The ground was quick, but I can assure you it wasn’t dangerous, and in my opinion, connections had every right to run him.

April 27, 2008 at 22:05 #160278I think BB did the damage at one of the fences after the stands on the first circuit- he walloped it and dropped back, albeit temporarily. You can then see Denis O’Regan looking down as they turn for home, then he goes badly wrong on the sharp bend after the stands second time.
Very sad, but as a good ground horse there was no reason not to run him. I’ve thought for the last few years that punters should swerve this race as the results are often unfathomable, now I’m sure- no more "Whitbread" punts for me.April 28, 2008 at 11:36 #160328Retired but alive…story below:
