Phew, that is slightly better news. Let’s hope he pulls through. I never pay attention to Facebook when it comes to racing matters. Still trust the Sporting Life and RP sites.
Nevertheless the horse comes first and I’m delighted that the news proved wrong. At least for the time being.
Please give this horse all the chances and treatments he deserves.

This is so sad. Didn’t expect that kind of bad news so fast.
    Poor horse

Johnston’s Best was the typical Irish fatality over hurdles:
Took off a bit too early over the killer hurdles (EasyFix) and landed on top of the hurdle breaking it’s shoulder.
Cruel is the only word that describes this type of hurdles best.
Rest in Peace Johnston’s Best, but there will be many more like you to come!

That’s very sad. He was still with Gigginstown I think. RIP poor boy.

    @ BLACK GOLD and Bonanzaboy:
    1. Ffos Las’ record is much better than Cheltenham’s over the same period. According to the AnimalAid HorseDeathwatch data Ffos Las has had 18 since it opened in August 2009 while Cheltenham has had 41 – over twice as many – and Cheltenham has fewer meetings a year than Ffos Las. In fact, on the data Cheltenham is the most lethal course in the country!

    2. Most of his NH runs seem to have been in handicap hurdles so it seems logical, to me anyway, to continue with that type of race with him once he went chasing. He had 3 wins and a 3rd over hurdles.

    3. Many horses bred to be sprinters can run over the longer distances, Red Rum being one. Iirc one of his first races was over 7 furlongs yet we know that 3 and 4+ miles were not beyond his capabilities. Breeding only gives you an indication of what a horse may be capable of; it’s no guarantee that it’s all.

    My replies:
    1. You shouldn`t compare anything to Cheltenham. The track itself and the position of the obstacles wouldn’t suit a lot of horses. There are safer tracks than Ffos Las for a novice.

    2. Hurdles and fences are just not the same. Let horses run first time out either in a beginners or a novices chase. Smaller fields, better view of the fences and so on. Make the introduction as easy as possible.

    3. Red Rum is just an exception. But breeding with sprinters and hoping that a failed Flat racer might turn out to be an exceptional NH horse is rather improbable.

Just let breed proper horses for the jumps, just like the French do it. Their AQPS breeds have quite a good record over jumps and in G1 races. Let the animals that are not suited for jumping with all legs on the floor. That`s my point.

First of all a handicap mark has to be earned by competing in that certain discipline. Otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to have one. Imagine ex-Flat horses with a handicap mark of 80 starting off in a hurdles handicap of a mark of 120 for example. Now that wouldn’t make any sense at all. So if a horse runs of a false mark it could very well be that it is asked too much against horses with some experience in that sphere.
Then the second thing is that a horse bred for sprinting or a mile on the Flat shouldn’t be asked to jump fences during the winter. The horse had zero talent for the game and that’s what we found out.
It was not just an accident as it always seems to be.
Connections once again had no clue what do with the horse.
It doesn’t help at all to defend them. It’s the loss of equine life which should be taken more seriously.

Very sad for the poor horse, BUT:
    1. Ffos Las has very tricky fences and has already had a rather high number of fatalities. Especially the ditches are not easy to jump.
    2. Why do horses that have never jumped a fence in public have to start their careers in a handicap which is the same as its hurdle mark? Hurdles and Fences two different ballgames.
Maybe I`m the only one who knows that.
    3. A horse by Chosir: A high-class sprinter himself on firm ground!!!!

    Is there something I`m missing???
Poor horse, surely deserved better. But as usual treated like a king. With his balls cut off, sent to jump obstacles because he was to bad as a Flat horse and he had to run over too far in wintery conditions. Completely the opposite of what he was supposed to be?
Why not donate this animal to charity???

Okay, it wasn’t 50+ lengths, it was just 38. So what is next? Try to bring his mark down to 120???

    Just two facts:
    1. The horse owes nobody anything.
    2. He HATES Cheltenham.
Show me a horse rated around 150 with a worse record at Cheltenham than him. Plus the CC course is nothing for a horse that likes to bowl along from the front. Too sharp and too tricky.

So please, just do the only sensitive thing after todays 50+ lengths beating and retire him.

Can’t even remember a horse of Champion Hurdle potential to become a Grade 1 winning chaser

    Sizing Europe

    Dawn Run

Is that all in about 30 years of NH racing???
That is not many good chasers. But as we all know Champion Hurdle winners have nothing in common with the jumping of proper obstacles.
Otherwise the likes of Istabraq, Alderbrook, Large Action, Make A Stand, Hurricane Fly, Hors La Loi, Binocular, Hardy Eustace, Rooster Booster, Rock On Ruby, Kribensis, Brave Inca, Granville Again and so on must have had about 30-40 Grade 1 wins over fences between them.

Hurdles and Chases two completely different games.
A pity that Oscar Whisky had to start his chasing career at a very high level novice wise. The most pathetic thing I have ever heard of is when horse make their novice chasing debut in a handicap of the same mark they had over hurdles. A novice chaser has a handicap mark of ZERO. No matter how many Champion Hurdles he has won.

    @ The Young Fella:
Thanks for expressing my thoughts to 100%.
This is no hindsight at all, but I fully agree with you that he was in the wrong race and that he could only jump properly when facing just 3 or 4 runners.
What a sad and stupid waste of equine life.
This is just too sad and Sandown is no schooling track.

He was rated 118 after his last race. That leaves him a stone inferior compared with the top Japanese horses. And no reason why he should improve on that form. And didn’t the ground look desperate to you? A bit like Catterick on a rainy day when you see no green, just brown mud????
You could pull your horse out of the race. Couldn’t you?

Well it sounds like hindsight. I don’t care what money people spend on a horse, the animal always should come first. No need to defend a trainer who is responsible for a killed horse. You have to ask why a horse with rather average AQPS Form starts off in a Grade 1 race with pretty decent opposition. Especially after NEVER jumping a hurdle in public.
That’s my point. I’m not taking anything away from Mr.Mullins, but he too is human and is entitled to make mistakes. What is next on the agenda? To send a horse into the National with no experience over fences at all.
Kauto Star first time in GB: a faller and Mr. Walsh almost destroyed him after remounting. Master Minded first time in GB: also a faller. Both in rather average races and no Grade 1.

Very sad indeed. But why should a horse that has never jumped a hurdle in public make it’s debut in a Grade 1 race? Of course it was fit, but how good would the French form be? Bumpers in France are not the same quality as in IRE or GB. The horse deserved an easier introduction in my opinion.
    Rest in Peace Allez Colombieres.

By the way, why can’t internal bleeding by stopped?
And if the bleeding procedure was a fast one how come they had time to put it down?

Very sad ending. What were they expecting any way?
He ran against the best horses in the world and wasn’t able to win. Why would you take him to Japan with no proper form at all?
It’s not a race won by Europeans that easy and even a race bypassed by Coolmore who like to win every pot available. So connections went there with no plan at all and just hoping for a miracle. One that didn’t happen and left the horse dead.
But money buys everything including a lot of horses. Unfortunately not enough brain capacity.
    Rest in Peace Trading Leather!

Thanks, but how is it possible to state the horse as pulled up even over an hour after the race?
Some things are unbelievable, but probably there are no RP readers left in this world. So therefore the mistake remains undiscovered.
By the way, the results are one of the few RP features left that are not strictly limited to paying members.
