I also think that the repeat of last years performance would see him go very, very close again. Though he didn’t beat too much today and probably Far West ran below par, he was almost cantering into the front and not stopping while running off 172 in a handicap.
Still the race remains an open one, but you have to thank connections again for sending him out today and not letting us in the dark about the wellbeing of the horse.
Well done to Gary Moore and his team!!!!Quite impressive, but what did he beat despite giving that much away?
Anyway his jumping was a lot better than two weeks ago. Good decision and very informative for the punter.February 21, 2015 at 14:54 in reply to: Select 3 horses to win on Saturday 21st February 2015 #751750Terrible day again: 2 of my 3 selections won (without the NAP) of course plus the next 2 reserves also won. No bets placed however…. Nothing more to say

Very good article BlackGold and thanks for posting it.
Rest in Peace Hitman Harry and let me ask something:
Why do the most inexperienced horses have to run in the worst possible ground?
A bumper should be brought forward and being run at a much earlier stage on the racecard. It can be done and it should be done.Bonanzaboy, we are not arguing or treating each other with disrespect. We just share our different views and believe me that I’m always saddened to read new threads on this board.
If you have already noticed, I mentioned how much the horse was in pain after his fall and this is what makes me sick and angry. From my point of view it isn’t that wrong to share my thoughts with you and other people and also to try and understand someone else’s opinion.I’m glad that there are peole on the forum who disagree with me.
But, my points are:
1. If we all love these animals then we should pay more attention to the circumstances regarding their deaths. It is too easy to say that a racecourse fatality is just one of those things. "Those things" happen year in, year out about 500 times (considering Irish and Flat racing). I think it is a bit too easy to dismiss every fatality just in the same way.
2. No matter how much an owner loves a horse, looking at the big players in Racing, it is just too easy to replace an animal. In some way it is like replacing dead stock by live stock. Horses come and go and about the vast majority of them we just don’t know anything about their final destinations. Instead, we just hear maybe too often how much these people care and love their horses. I would find it very tough to cope with about 15-20 fatalities every year. And also why certain horses are put down during retirement at an rather early age (I mean before reaching the age of 20) for no injury or illness causes, remains still pretty much in the dark.
3. Older horses are also punished by the handicapper. Burton Port had a rating of 144 compared to his all time high of 170. He ran like a horse in the high 120s or low 130s and not like one rated 144. This means tougher outings at an older age. No favours are done here either. It takes horses too long tohave their handicap marks lowered that raised. This is surely wrong.
4. Is there a stat about how many horses are sent to the butcher when killed on the racecourse? If the butcher comes into play, then the love factor immediately disappears. No one would give his beloved pet to a butcher or meat factory.
5. I don’t care who was riding the horse, but sometimes jockeys would be a lot cooler if they would pulled up a bit too soon than too late.I also don’t mind it if people disagree with me or if they even hate me. Racing has yet to reach the 21st Century. Just look at the ridiculous going descriptions, the whip rule (I fully agrre here with Sir Mark Prescott Bt) or those ridiculous NH starts with horses just walking the first 50 or 100yds. The racing industry always finds ways to deceive the general public. In every single way……
No, I just want to see someone here criticizing a jockey, trainer or owner when something like this happens. And I seriously would want to know if they are going to take Burton Port home or if he will land on someone’s plate sooner or later.
Well, after being a good 40 lengths off the pace with 3 to jump you should consider to pull up such a lovely character. I hope he did’t go straight to the butcher. Once again very ugly scenes in the background with the horse clearly being in massive pain and as mentioned before: no one seems to care as long as it is only a horse per day.
RIP Burton Port
I am sure you were treated like a real king even when you took the bullet!!!!Re: Kauto Star
Kauto was quite a decent jumper in France. The change to the British fences wasn’t easy and they also had the option to send him over hurdles as well. But they where just too confident that chasing would be his game and Nicholls and Ruby proved to be right. But let’s not forget that fall in the GC which was quite heavy and Nicholls admit himself that Kauto was lucky to get away with it.1st January: All Honours

8th February: Le Vent D’AntanThat is eleven horses we are 100% certain about in just five weeks.
But let’s not forget that the Irish race only about 5-6 times a week. This isn’t a normal number if you really care about the sport and if you really love and respect animals.
We are not talking about point-to-point deaths or horses killed on the gallops or horses that are put down at a later stage due to injuries suffered on the racecourse. No, he is a VERY POOR JUMPER !!! FACT
Apart from his maiden hurdle win in which he started at 1/9 he faced one opponent in his next race and made mistakes and he faced two oppnonents in the race after where he also lacked fluency.
Then came the race at Cheltenham where he fell and broke his jaw. After that he was stone last next time out that because of not too fluent jumping and then he finished 4th in a five runners race. In his very next start, today, he fell again. So how can a normal brain think that this horse is a good jumper????
Making mistakes in Mickey Mouse races, falling twice on his neck and bein tailed off on two other occasions?
You call that good for a Willie Mullins trained horse? Are you trying to say that there is no further improvement in a seven year old and that this is the best he can jump????
WOW
By the way, I didn’t expect him to fall today and I never blamed anyone for his fall. But one can raise the question how many "lives" a NH horse can have?
Look at the fatalities in Ireland: They race 3-4 times a week over the jumps and yet the number of serious injuries and fatalities seems (NO, IT IS) a lot higher than in Britain. Tight bends, very poor underground conditions and average animals would explain a lot. So I’m not blaming the trainers, but the idiots who run the show like it used to be run 50 years ago.He will be very hesitant at his flights next time out. Thats for sure…. Animals are not stupid and especially after a broken jaw last year and also after today’s tumble he will be a lot smarter than we think. I know that they aren’t expecting him to fall on his neck and no one is doing this on purpose, but you have to ask yourself whether jumping is his true discipline.
Winner was cantering after jumping the last and still drew clear ahead of two horses that battled out 2nd place.

His left hind leg looked badly injured. He couldn’t put any weight on it, so I guess the writing is on the wall for that poor fellow. But as usual, I hope to be wrong.
