My passion for NH racing started about 25 years ago at the beginning of the 90’s. At that time there was a proper summer break and trainers weren’t afraid to take on proper opposition. Just think of races with Viking Flagship, Travado, Deep Sensation, Wonder Man, Egypt Mill Prince and so on. None of them was wrapped in cotton wool. They ran against each other prior to Cheltenham on numerous times. I remember the Flagship running off 12-00 in the Victor Chandler some 20 years ago. Nowadays Hurricane Fly beats Jezki twice The New One stays out of the way of Faugheen and no one else dares to enter a proper horse against the Champion Hurdle favourite. It all comes down to just one meeting: The Festival.
Lord Windermere twice a Festival winner once again being prepared for just one race. Remember Looks Like Trouble who won the same races back to back at the Festival in 1999 and 2000. Noel Chance managed to get quite a number of wins prior to the RSA and also prior to the GC. No hanging or schooling around in Grade 1 races!!!!

Also what happened to races like the John Bull Chase at Wincanton or the Tommy Whittle and the other one at Haydock??? Downgraded to poor handicaps or even taken out of the programme.
I miss course specialists like Bradbury Star or Dublin Flyer and I also miss proper novices chases with 10 runners or more including hurdlers rated 150+. Well maybe I’m getting older and missing something, but if you give this weeks racing a miss until Saturday, then you haven’t missed too much. Same seems to apply to the 5-6 weeks prior to Cheltenham.

The water jump at Auteuil is quite spectacular and demanding as well. But the horse seem to jump it very well and it is one of the "easier" fences at the track.

Apologies if I’ve made a mistake. From the way you wrote your post it looked like you’d deliberately looked at the replay purely to see how the horse died.

It’s okay. I’m just happy they didn’t show the head-on. It is enough to know that the horse was fatally injured, who was travelling quite okay before it fell.
However, the thing don’t understand is why the horse was rated 99 if it was beaten about 250 lengths in its three previous starts. I know that 99 isn’t too high, but it was still enough for the horse to carry top weight in a seller.

Thanks for the link! I didn’t realise that 2m 4f is the most frequent distance to be run in chases.

What I have noticed are how few courses have a water jump now. Where do they still have one apart from Sandown, Cheltenham and Aintree?

I think Newbury has one and also Huntingdon, Wincanton and Market Rasen. These are the first that spring to my mind. But, I could be wrong too.

Excellent news. I think he is in very good hands and he has a very intelligent trainer who knows his horses quite well and also cares a lot especially when it comes to their preparations. Just think of State Of Play or Cappa Bleu and so on. I think he will get every possible chance to survive and make a good recovery.
All the best to you Milan and keep on fighting!!!

I’m beginning to think that Ruby Light gets some sort of perverse excitement from fatalities …why on earth would you feel the need to deliberately watch a replay of a horse taking a fatal fall . :(

Well I think that I am fully entitled to watch a replay as often as I want to, especially when I couldn’t watch all races live on TV or through the Internet. And without knowing the outcome after the fall I had to check THIS F…..N FORUM to find out that the poor lad was fatally injured which was also confirmed by the Racing Post later or at the same time.
So do I have to justify myself for every replay I watch and report it to you GESTAPO folks?????
By the way, one of the greatest Gold Cup winners of the past 25 years was Looks Like Trouble. A highly underrated horse and one that I backed in the RSA and the year after in the GC. Does this make me a sick person when I like reliving this horse’s performances? I guess not. Start using your brain, please before you make such offending comments. The time of censorship belongs to the past.

The wonder horse was the bookies friend again today. Backed down to 11/10 he managed to get 2nd again. Of course both performances are okay, especially for a smaller stable. But two runs on heavy in the space of 24 hours are quite demanding to say the least. I wonder when they will turn him out again. Anyway, no one will trust the horse next time. But probably the jockey.

Well, the punishment is a joke. 14 days is not 14 days for everyone. She only had 4 rides in the last 14 days and a total of 63 the entire 2014/15 season. So how many racedays is she going to miss???? This is not going to hurt her as much as it hurt the punters yesterday.
Anyway, if she thought that there was another circuit to go, why did she pull up immediately and didn’t ride on for another half a furlong or so? And if we allow jockeys to make mistakes then let me ask one question: Why doesn’t she know the difference between the numbers FIVE and numbers NINE???? I think that every jockey on the planet would be able to tell you if he has jumped just FIVE or NINE hurdles. It is a huge difference between those two numbers.
Last but not least, well done to the people who backed the winner from 10/1 the previous night down to 3/1. Your winnings were NEVER in danger!
    Well done!!!

By the way, Sirop de Mente is entered for today, will be ridden by Lucy Gardner and is the 2/1 favourite as I’m writing this reply.

But again a horse with just three previous runs being beaten 156/56/40 lengths with starting prices of 100/1 and 200/1 in those three races.

True, but a strange thing to highlight when the horse had been dropped to a more appropriate level and starting this race at 6-1.

Being dropped into selling company means nothing. Just look at the runners in the race:

Tortoise PU – had three runs in maiden hurdles at 66/1, 66/1 and 100/1 and was dropped into selling company twice finishing stone last in his previous race and pulled up today!!!

Craftybird PU – dropped from novice handicap company into selling company the last two races and was stone last and pulled up today.

Rockweiler last and beaten 60 lengths today. Prior to today he was 100/1 in each of his novice hurdles and 25/1 when dropped into a seller the last time. Finished 7th at Fakenham and was the last horse to finish today.

What I’m saying is that crap horses remain crap even when dropped into selling company and no one should wonder when they are badly injured or killed. We should also be aware that 100/1 with the bookies means 500/1 or even 1000/1 with Betfair which is more realistic. So is it inappropriate to ask why we need that kind of horses in such a professional sport?

Could we have a man, woman or possibly a small child ringing a bell for the final circuit as in athletics ? Though it would be easy to envisage that going wrong

That would be great, at least at tracks like Fakenham, Fontwell or Plumpton have someone waving a certain flag before the final circuit starts.

If she wasn’t trying or stopped riding then the ban would have been 28 days I reckon. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
The outcome for the public and for punters is the same: they’ve lost money. So why is there a difference between non-triers and jockeys who can’t even count to TWO???
Will she have to go to school and take basic maths lessons? I hope so….. And I want to see the proof!!! Have her exercising 1+1=2 or 1+1+1=3 and so on.

Just watched the replay and you couldn’t tell whether it was bad or not. But again a horse with just three previous runs being beaten 156/56/40 lengths with starting prices of 100/1 and 200/1 in those three races. Clearly not one of the smartest prospects in the game.

Don’t expect too much from Des. The fall unfortunately looked very bad and I don’t think it was instant. It could have been his shoulder and it really looked very ugly.
    Rest in Peace MOSCOW MANNON!!!

I hate to say this, but the horse with the best 2m form this season is Dodging Bullets. He won two proper races – the Tingle Creek and the Clarence House – in very convincing fashion. He should start favourite and not Sprinter Sacre and he shouldn’t be behind Sire de Grugy in the betting. Also Mr. Moleshould move into single digits as well. These two horses are trained by the best trainer in the sport and have won the best QMCC trials this season. I am convinced that Mr. Mole would have won just as easy as SDG did yesterday, if he were to contest that same race.

Some really good tipping here. And people really consider a good SP and seem a lot more selective than on other forums.
Looking forward to your update Jac.
