Well I agree with you about the breeding and the ground being the most important factors regarding fatalities. I am not worried about the GN and that would be just about the last race on the calendar we should talk about. But I am very concerned about the very high numbers of horses breaking down on the flat or in jumps races with their breakdowns not being related to a jump or an obstacle. Too many two-year olds being fatally injured and too many horses breaking down during the summer. The first thing that comes to mind would be a clean 3-month break for the jumps brigade. No one is really interested at venues like Worcester, Southwell and Market Rasen staging meetings when the conditions are unsuitable and also the quality of the horses. Give jockeys and staff and also the horses some time to regroup and bring them back towards autumn.
As far as the breeding is concerned I think we simply have too many poorly bred horses that end up over the jumps or are overraced at the age of two. We need a lot more quality than quantity. We should be talking a lot more about Big Bucks, Kauto Star Frankel or Sprinter Sacre and not about broken necks or a broken pelvis. The problem is extremely easy to solve: Just understand that less is always a bit more….Looked horrible, because he didn’t get high enough before the hurdle and I think he broke the leg from just around the shoulder. He was dead though when they ran towards the line so I hope it was a quick death. But very tragic to see that kind of accident happen over this type of hurdles. Especially because they are so unforgiving. You can’t even brush through the top of them – so you better not touch them. In fact they could use a concrete wall instead, because once you hit it, the outcome is the same.
Velvet Bullet looked dead to me. He fell, didn’t get up and was moving just like a horse that is about to lose its life. Hopefully I’m wrong!!!!
Royal Scoundrel at Chepstow was another one to pull up injured in the novice chase. Lets hope he is ok.Watched the replay numerous times. He was ridden after about 7-8f when they took the first turn, then he steadily began to drop out ouf contention while still being hard ridden and with about 4-5f to travel while still being ridden and already 20+ lenghts of the pace the tendon snapped. What a big surprise??? This must have been very agonizing for the horse, first to be that tired and then to be that badly injured. If you ask me, you can hardly beat that kind of cruelty. Plus don’t forget that the horse was off the track for about 380 days and was just a 10-12f horse. Why bother pushing and shoving him to death when already beaten out of sight???
Hope he will survive his operation and make a full recovery after this bout of colic.
Would appreciate anyone with more news to keep us up to date. It also would be a great shame to hear bad news about this horse. In fact about any horse at all. What a superb race!
Hey, that’s not me – that was Lydia (I think) analysing the race. It took her a while to realize that Persian Run was actually badly injured and wanted to keep us up to date. Lydia, a horse running on three legs is not badly injured – it is dead. Come on that is not your first racing fatality. Don’t play stupid….
Rest in Peace Persian Run and
Ludlow Racecourse, please try to do something about your bends. Just think of last season…Very sad news, but at least he reached some age.
He also won a Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2 at that time) and a Mackeson Gold Cup in the same year (1992).
Rest in Peace old boy.Are you kidding me? What is the horse doing over hurdles????
Changed hands and jockeys like daily underwear! Not bred for the job, but maybe worth the risk. This is getting too ridiculous and it hurts too match if you follow it regularly. And it ran about a furlong or so with a badly damaged leg. Unnecessary pain with no good purpose behind it.@ nighthorse: What is the insurance money? I mean how high is it? And how does this work?
I’m just curious, because this is what sometimes comes to my mind as well. However I never dare to think that badly about horse owners and trainers. We are told that they care so much about their horses…Great to see all of you sharing the same thoughts as I do. It still didn’t help poor Ridiyka, but at least there are a lot of people who seem to care.
You have to be joking. A horse with a flapping leg being held and awaiting its death. Just before the bullet is shot in her head she gets to have another look at her "friends". Does it get more barbaric? She wasn’t even a proper racehorse and had one start on the flat where she finished last. Not only that 3-year olds shouldn’t be jumping hurdles if they aren’t supposed to do so (bred by the Aga Khan), but they should be allowed to die in a more pleasant way.

Click on the race, then on the horse and you will get information about its last 10 starts or so. Plus if you register with them, you can bet directly on the French Tote.
@ reetlass: not quite correct, since he ran SIX times last year in France and had a start this year back in April at Lyon Parilly.
Nevertheless when athletes have the chance to break their necks or spines on a regular basis, we should stop talking about sports.
A very ugly fall and one of quite a lot broken necks this summer (or back or whatever)…Very sad, but nice too see him getting to that age.
RIP Go Ballistic!@ Black Gold: It really didn’t look that badly broken? Isn’t there anything they could do and try to fix it? I mean one day you could start trying to fix those "easy" breaks. Medicine has achieved so much in recent years, why not giving it a try. You can put the horse down any time, but while trying to fix it you could gain more information about why it doesn’t work and how it could work. Nothing worse could happen to the horse than being put down.
Thanks for your replies and the productive and intelligent discussion. However to have a horse break down on the Flat after 2f of nothing more than a canter and another one on the beach makes you wonder even more.
Broke down after running 2f at pedestrian speed. What are bones made of these days?
