Nope – that’s it for this race. I’m not a fluffy bunny person, I have worked with horses and still have two of my own. Had a nice day at Haydock recently and love jump racing but I do not want to go to this race because I consider the level of risk far too great. I felt they were wrong to run Synchronised as he is not the ideal jumper for Aintree. Isn’t a Gold Cup enough?
You don’t need to see a head on. That was a shocking and dangerous move and I strongly feel that people should write to the BHA expressing concern. Shame on Richard Johnson. Thank goodness horse and jockey not seriously injured on such firm ground.
What is northern racing bringing to the party?
Nicky Richards, Ferdy Murphy, Sue Smith …..
Yes, wasn’t that just brill – must be down to the return of Monet’s – he’s given them all a pep talk. Let’s hope the better luck carries on for them.
They do have chestnuts on hind legs, below the hock. They also have little horny bits behind the fetlocks, called ergots. Thanks for the info on Denman’s colour inheritance, v. interesting.
Game performance I thought, though perhaps true enough she had little to beat. No-one has mentioned that she is half sister to Deep Purple…
Inglis Drever dying of colic saddened me greatly.
Apologies for heading off at a bit of a tangent. Having watched the race replay, I could not see what Sam Thomas did so wrong? I was more concerned about the fall and horse fatality in the race. I thought the horse appeared to slip on snow lying near the rail? Am I wrong? It was an horrific fall and could have easily been a rider fatality too.
Henrietta Knight does/did do dressage (or "flatwork") with some of her horses, including Best Mate. I think I read somewhere that Michael Dickinson believes in it too – to get horses to drop their heads, stretch their necks and use their backs – all useful for building the right muscles and for jumping
I thought Totilas was awesome too, but Horse and Hound website have a video of the late Reine Klimke winning the 1984 (Los Angeles) Olympic dressage on a much more TB type of horse. It makes interesting viewing – the horses’ action is nothing like as spectacular but the rider-horse relationship is very special. I know that this horse (Ahlerich) was a very hot-headed and sensitive horse, given to bolting out of the arena when younger.
There have been comments along lines of "racing needs a star like this". Haven’t we got them? Sea The Stars? Kauto? Masterminded?
It is desperately sad about Exotic Dancer – classy, consistent and beautiful horse. Moscow Catch another fatality today. His owner lost Roman Ark early in the season. I’ve had enough of Aintree this year and shall not watch the National tomorrow.
I personally don’t feel the National fences are a fair challenge to many (most?) chasers; For my money they can demolish them for good and make a less sharp, conventional steeplechase track. I know there will always be accidents jumping but I’m beginning to feel sickened by it – and after a good Cheltenham this year as well (of course the ground was slower).
I am in agreement with many others. Have just tried the new RP site, downloading IE7 etc, and first impressions are awful! Is Raceform Interactive going to be only alternative now? Is this the idea, were we getting too much for free?
Reason for late career start? I was once told they couldn’t catch him til he was 6. However, Irishmen are known for such humour.
I just about remember Kinloch Brae. With regard to Timmy Hyde – are we talking about the one and same – father won the Grand National on ?Workman?. If so he certainly made up for it later – pin-hooker supreme! As for L’Escargot – not often given the credit he deserves, perhaps due to his being a washy chestnut with blinkers. Two Gold Cups and a National, what would we be saying if Kauto Star replicated that!
I like Philip Robinson and Kerrin McEvoy on the flat, Graham Lee and Andrew Thornton over jumps. What does anyone think of Denis O’Regan? I thought the ride he gave Tidal Bay was excellent.
