Couldn’t see anything on RP that he got a ban for the dangerous maneuover he did in the 4.10 at Taunton, but surely it merited one. He nearly caused a serious accident to horse and jockey and never even looked to see if he was clear. As a top jockey with many years’ experience he should know better and I would have thought the stewards would feel the same. Yet he seems to have gotten away with it. Do we need actual injuries/deaths before the stewards act?
Is it me or does jump racing get away with this sort of thing more than the flat? If that had happened on the flat I bet he would have been ban immediately so why the leniency because it’s a jumps meeting?
March 28, 2012 at 19:12 #398650I haven’t seen the race but there was an enquiry:
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference on the bend turning out of the back straight, between the winner, CARAVEL (IRE), ridden by Richard Johnson, and ON KHEE, which fell, ridden by Tom Scudamore. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they were satisfied that no interference had taken place.

March 29, 2012 at 06:11 #398669Wow, I simply can’t believe that. He must have squeezed up On Khee at least, a horse doesn’t take that sort of avoiding action on a whim. Wish we could see a head on.
March 29, 2012 at 09:07 #398676I can hardly believe the stewards didn’t take the race off him after their "enquiry".

No excuses for him coming over that hard. No horse on his outside pushing him over, plenty of space for both horses. Sheer bad riding and deserves to be punished severely IMO.
That was a horrible fall and Johnson was very lucky that neither On Khee or its jockey was badly hurt. Also very lucky if he didn’t get a smack in the mouth in the changing room!

March 29, 2012 at 11:20 #398686When the money is down, there is too much presure on a Jockey. How many times was Catalyze hit yesterday? That’s where we’re at, where there’s money – there’s corruption.
Backing two runners is the relentless pursuit of value. Backing each way is a shortcut to the poor house. Only 7% make a long term profit.
March 29, 2012 at 12:02 #398688You don’t need to see a head on. That was a shocking and dangerous move and I strongly feel that people should write to the BHA expressing concern. Shame on Richard Johnson. Thank goodness horse and jockey not seriously injured on such firm ground.
March 29, 2012 at 13:35 #398700Only by seeing the head on could I be convinced that there wasn’t interference. I saw it from the two angles ATR showed right after the race and it looked like definite interference from both sides. The commentator at the time thought it was as well. Head on might show different, but unfortunately fans aren’t likely to get the opportunity to see for themselves.
March 29, 2012 at 15:21 #398709Would any lengthy ban would have coincided with Aintree perhaps?
Maybe he has a quick word with Scu after the race because I’m struggling to find any logical reason for him getting away with such a manoeuvre.March 29, 2012 at 17:28 #398720I’m not particularly fussed on the issue but have long held the belief that jockeys should play no part in 99% of stewards enquiries.
