Jack of Trumps carried the McManus colours and he was the Irish Banker in whatever year it was. Think he started 1/1 or so for the four miler and fell. Trained by Edward O’Grady (I think)

Reason for late career start? I was once told they couldn’t catch him til he was 6. However, Irishmen are known for such humour.

Thanks for the full story – can’t have been many better who didn’t see the racecourse until 7. Seems a shame he didn’t have the chance to have a crack at our National as well.

Just found this topic, apologies for the belated contribution. After winning the stayers hurdle in a canter, Dreaper had intended to run him in the 3-mile novice chase the next day, the meeting having been curtailed to 2 days due to the atrocious conditions. The 3-miler was re-organised to be the next race after the Gold Cup, but the meeting was cancelled after Ten Up slogged home. In retrospect Bula was most gallant in that race, but if Brown Lad had been entered he’d have been a cert

The first ever edition of Chasers and Hurdlers, covering the 1975/76 season, has a lengthy piece on Brown Lad, who they rated 175 as a chaser, second only to Captain Christy (182) among Irish chasers that year.

They do include a note that Brown Lad won two bumpers as a 7-y-old.

The owner also had Colebridge, who won an irish Grand National and was placed in the Gold Cup. He was the most beautiful fluid jumper. She also owned Good Review, who won the Schweppes hurdle, when it was one of the big events of the NH season.
