April 12, 2025 at 12:11 in reply to: Select 3 Horses to Win – Saturday 12th April, to Saturday 18th October 2025 #1727008Have no idea when it comes to the flat, but there is the back end of the NH season plus some summer jumping. (Some would say I know little about that too, but at least I will be familiar with the trainers and jockeys).
My tactic will be to select horses I know from the jumps if they are running on the flat. A sort of jumps loyalty, if you will.
But for now, it’s my usual stabs in the dark, including a favourite dual-purpose horse at a price.

I’m baffled as to why only one person in a knowledgable forum like this has mentioned that the horse’s previous run was 143 days before (nearly five months) and that it has run just once in 51 weeks! Isn’t that alarm bells about proven recent fitness?
How did the horse pass any fitness test for the race? Ahh, there isn’t one.
Surely a horse must prove its fitness by completing a 3m race within 90 days (or three months) of the race itself – that is an easy fix isn’t it? That would surely help both concentrate the mind and aid the handicapper too! And we’d see the horse actually compete as well, another side effect bonus.
Finally, what was the handicapper doing putting CDA up 7lbs for winning a pretty average race at Bangor by 5 lengths? It’s not like he won by 60 lengths!
Enjoyed that, as usual. Amazed I finished third as didn’t have any of the long-shot winners that it seemed so many had! Presumed I’d have been overtaken, but I just plugged gamely on for a never nearer third.
Thanks for doing all the hard work Graham.
Like last year, no need to be clever and try to find something, as it’ll be won by a Mullins horse we’ve not really heard of.
Or maybe Macdermott will double up. It’s been very gently campaigned, Langer Dan style, to get back down to last year’s weight.
Last season’s win over Surrey Quest, by a short head, was devastating in its bloody inevitability.
I’d have liked to have seen the field for this race had Aintree not been so successful for Willie. As it is, he’ll run six or seven now. Could be some interesting jockey bookings as he looks to some of the better local riders perhaps?
Posted in here last night (Saturday) asking how he did it, and there has been three pages since.
As this forum doesn’t have a ‘like’ feature, or a ‘quote’ feature, I will just note that greenasgrass’ two posts on p21 educated me. They are as follows…
“He also has what Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson, Dan Skelton, Gordon Elliott and, sadly, now also Henry de Bromhead don’t have- a son to build the dynasty for. That keeps the fire burning- you could see it clear as day today.” Great point!
The post about him entertaining the owners ended “He knows what makes people tick.” Another great point, very well put.
Interesting and informative debates like this keep this forum worth visiting.

Like all the above (and more), it’s lost the magic because you first experienced it xx years ago. Everything you newly experienced as a teenager had more magic then than it has now. That’s nostalgia, the freshness of it at the time, and the exuberance of youth where everything was thrilling and exciting cos you hadn’t got tired or anything yet.
Oh well, back to the day job for Patrick on Monday, whatever that day job is. I’m sure it’s nothing to do with riding horses…
Will anyone dare ask the question how he does this?
With so many horses, how can he devote time to each of them to ensure each one is at its best when it matters?
The one that won the Triumph -= Willie barely knew who he was.
Does the industry need to find out what he singularly does what everyone else doesn’t do? Because it is beginning to feel a little suspicious.

Well, the obvious answer is Nico on CH in the Aintree Hurdle there.
He’s going to win the Trainers championship again by miles. Probably win the GN, Scottish and Whitbread again on the way plus loads of others races in between, just like last season.
