Just 16 left in (max field 20). That’s not news really these days but needs mention. If we can’t fill a competitive and well-rewarded handicap like this, what race will they fill outside of the Festival?
Protektorat was top weight but isn’t declared, so no.1 on the card is Matata.
The Jukebox Man another not to make it, which is a shame as I’m going both days this weekend and was really hoping to see him.
Cromwell declares The Other Mozzie and Thecompanysergeant.

So he’s going to sell them all instead.
Very 2025.
Chianti Classico retirement announced by Kim Bailey today.
What a shame we never got to see him kick on last season, picking up that injury in a Premier Handicap at Cheltenham in December.
A lot of good NH horses in this list in the last few months. The scene needs quality as well as quantity and that injury was so disappointing.
Can only conclude that Cromwell is going for the trainers’ championship here then, this season…
I see everyone’s favourite plucky amateur won a race at Chester today against some real amateurs.
As someone not involved with the sport, can someone tell me, like I’m five years old, why wouldn’t he want to win that race?
Plenty of sneering, as expected, here.
So, the question remains: How should racing promote itself?
You lot seem to know what won’t work, so what will work?
Had State Man not fell at the last on the CH, Mullins would be so far clear that he’d not have bothered with Sandown.
And, apart from the Scottish National, not bothered that much with Ayr either.
Wonder how many trainers were scared off the Whitbread by the huge Mullins entry.
I’m top of the league. Do I go big or do I go super-safe?
I mean, I could wait to see what mike2084 in second-place selects and just copy that, but that isn’t really what we are here for and isn’t in the spirit of the game. So, this is a wild forecast that goes totally against the narrative of the Mullins/Skelton nonsense.
Win – Resplendent Grey
EW – GoshenRes – O’Moore Park
I didn’t have any bets, and didn’t know any of today’s results before just watching the replays from Plumpton.
Mullins wins all the prize money, because of course he does cos he’s got all the good horses, and two solid hurdlers lose their lives.
Completely deflating stuff all round really I’m afraid.
.
“Why run in the Old Roan for only 45 grand when you can run in the National for more than 10 times that?”
The Old Roan is in October and the GN is in April. Surely you can run in both?
(Ahoy would be 150/1 in the GN for me. No chance at all.)
Ahoy Senor is a 10yo now. Rated 162, that puts him 7 lbs lower than when third beaten 2 lengths in the Old Roan this season.
If AS runs three times before January, failing to win each time and nudging the handicap down to 150, then it shouldn’t be beyond their race-planning wit to find a small field Veterans contest to win later in the season.
Similarly the Middle Distance Veterans’ Chase Series for Hitman. The first of those for the current season was at Wincanton in October, and there is one at Cheltenham in mid-December. OK, they are 0-150 events and Hitman is currently 156, but that mark will surely go down to around 150 after seasonal debut. Maybe one later next season when he has got down to that mark.
Win – Dubai Dayes
EW – Le Milos
Res – The Widdow MakerNext season:
Hitman for a Haldon Gold Cup? This is a good ground horse, maybe something like the Summer Plate would be an opportunity?
Ahoy Senor for a Premier Chase or the Edinburgh Gin, both at Kelso?
Suspect those races (barring the Market Rasen one) will have six runners or fewer.
When Goshen comes up the hill to win this…there will be scenes!
Fair points there Marlingford, thanks for enagging and educating!

(Some would say I know little about that too, but at least I will be familiar with the trainers and jockeys).
My tactic will be to select horses I know from the jumps if they are running on the flat. A sort of jumps loyalty, if you will.
But for now, it’s my usual stabs in the dark, including a favourite dual-purpose horse at a price.
