The master trainer ran two horses at Tramore last night, both ridden by P Byrnes.
On Betfair, the first one drifted from 6 to 30. The next drifted from 4 to 15.
Both ran like drains and both had a comment in running stating “never a factor”.
Yet Kevin O’Ryan, pundit on RTV, did not alert viewers to the alarming drift of either horse or offer any comment on their performance.
The Irish stewards did not appear to do anything either.
I expect there will also be a conspiracy of silence when in future there is a fortune of money for one of them and it hacks up on the bridle.
May 10, 2023 at 22:45 #16473405.25 at Gowran Park today. Ellaat, trained by Byrnes, finished fourth.
The Racing Post comment in running: “Dwelt start, towards rear, headway under 3f out, TENDERLY HANDLED but kept on well inside final furlong, went fourth towards finish, not reach leaders, eyecatcher”.
Even the Irish stewards might have had enough of this character now:
“The Raceday Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Ellaat (GB), ridden by G.P. Brouder, and trained by C.Byrnes.
G.P. Brouder stated that his instructions were to settle his mount early, get it to relax as it had made a noise previously and to do his best from there. He said his mount settled well but made a noise at the first bend and this continued throughout the race. He said he tried to quicken the pace from about halfway so it would not turn into a sprint in the closing stages and that his mount hung right in the home straight but despite this, was ridden to the best of his ability.
He concluded by stating that his mount was leg weary after the winning post and was dismounted and walked back in. He accepted that his mount took some time to pull up after the race and had continued galloping until after the mile start. When questioned why he did not pull up his mount during the race despite making such a noise, he stated that he was happy to continue because it had made a noise previously.
C.Byrnes, confirmed the instructions given and referred to his charges wind issues. He said he was disappointed with the ride given and referred to it as ‘not pretty viewing’ but when asked if he felt the rider should have pulled his charge up, he stated that the the rider was correct not to pull the animal up and referred to it as being being ‘only a low rated animal’.
On further questioning when asked if he felt the animal was prevented from running on its merits, he was satisfied that this had not occurred.
The Raceday Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer, who stated that Ellaat was coughing post race, but was otherwise post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards were satisfied that both trainer and rider were in breach of Rule 212A(i) in that both were involved in the running and/or riding of a horse in a race, who deliberately or recklessly causes or permitted a horse to run other than on its merits.
Having taken their records in this regard into account, the Raceday Stewards fined C. Byrnes, trainer, €6,000. They suspended G.P. Brouder for 21 racedays and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. Furthermore, the Raceday Stewards suspended Ellaat for 90 days in accordance with the provisions of Rule 212 C.(d) and referred the betting pattern of Ellaat to a Senior racing Official for further investigation.
In arriving at their decision, The Raceday Stewards acknowledged the report from the I.H.R.B. Veterinary Office, that Ellaat was coughing post race, but they were satisfied that given the way the animal finished out the race and appeared to them to run on after passing the winning post that the animal was not inconvenienced in any way at the time.”
Aside from blatant cheating, it is nice to hear how much Byrnes cares about a “low rated animal”.
May 10, 2023 at 23:22 #1647345Listen to Gary O’Brien’s commentary after the race: as close as he could get to saying “bent as a nine bob note” without saying it. I like Gary O’Brien.
“Aside from blatant cheating, it is nice to hear how much Byrnes cares about a “low rated animal”.
“he stated that the the rider was correct not to pull the animal up and referred to it as being being ‘only a low rated animal’.”Yep, what a lovely chap. What a great advertisement for Irish racing and how much we care for our horses.
May 10, 2023 at 23:32 #1647348Very informative posts by both of you. Thanks for so many details and the Stewards’ Room report.
I guess Gary O’Brien would always tell us a bit more, if he’d be allowed to. A very good commentator, analyst and person. You can bet that both horses will have “their” day sometime during the summer jumping season.
The dismount after the race was probably part of the “show”….
May 10, 2023 at 23:55 #1647353Ruby, the results page on irishracing.com has , along with race notes (such as ” tenderly handled, ran on, never nearer ” transl. “bent as a nine bob note”) the stewards report on an icon just above the results along with an icon for the news report on the race.
When you’re looking at an individual horse’s form , if it has been mentioned in a steward’s report before, there will be a green “SR” icon beside the date of the race. It’s very handy. Unsurpisingly this horse has a few green icons here and there- though his previous trainer wasn’t quite so good at pulling strokes- amusingly, on one green-iconed occasion, the horse opened at 50-1 in the morning, went off at 5-2 fav (in a 16 runner race)….and got beaten a head
oh well, I expect they had the caution to back it ew so they got something for their troubles.May 10, 2023 at 23:57 #1647354“The dismount after the race was probably part of the “show”….”
Yeah the horse was bouncing up and down pulling and the jockey was all “Try to look tired dammit. And don’t stand on my foot”.
May 11, 2023 at 00:21 #1647358Thanks for the link, GAG.
His previous race was only three weeks ago and once again they’ve had the same excuses. Horse made a noise, made even more noises afterwards, the jockey should have been closer and more forceful in the finish…..
How many more times will they get away with such practice?
May 11, 2023 at 05:59 #1647368Agree with the comments about Gary O’Brien. The best presenter and a good commentator as well. He strikes me as someone with real integrity, so for him to in effect call out the ride in commentary is significant.
Byrnes has got away with this kind of conduct for years. Davy Russell was on RTV recently after he retired the second time. He said to Nick Luck how Byrnes was very important in his career and smirked “We had a great day at Roscommon” or words to that effect.
Yes Davy, that time three horses with no form and which had been beaten out of sight in their previous races all suddenly got punted off the boards and hacked up with you on board. Byrnes put the punters away that night.
But the next time another of his horses lands a gamble, I expect there will be the usual talk about Byrnes being “shrewd” and how he “knows how to place his horses” etc.
May 11, 2023 at 09:56 #1647384I guess he really knows how to place his horses when the money is down. But not in the prep races before, when things start to get very ugly.
Once again the horse involved (Ellaat) was coughing post-race. Something that also happened three weeks ago. But, according to the report from the IHRB veterinary office the coughing didn’t inconvenience him during the race. Which basically means that coughing post-race is okay and that vets can determine whether the horse was affected by that during the race or not??? What kind of nonsense is this? There seem to be different type of coughs: the ones that affect the horse during a race and the ones that don’t.
By the way, why did they buy the horse in the first place? Most likely because they have something in mind with it. A well-handicapped dual purpose performer with the potential to land a touch. It was ridden by his son in a Cheltenham handicap hurdle while still with Noel Kelly. Maybe Philip saw something that day which prompted them to buy him.

Different types of cough right enough. The one that deceives punters is known medically as the Fu cough.
May 11, 2023 at 21:17 #1647440Beautiful Steeplechasing , def worth a boom boom tish ….
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
August 23, 2023 at 18:10 #1660657One of Byrnes’s absolutely punted off the boards at Sligo, wins with the minimum of fuss.
The horse had decent form but it just goes against the grain whenever this character lands a gamble and gets a sycophantic interview from Kevin O’Ryan afterwards.
May 28, 2025 at 22:09 #1731419Father and son had a runner in the first race at Wexford tonight. Opened at 7/2, drifted out to 13/2, looked to have the race at its mercy (1.14 in running on Betfair) and then unseated its rider at the last hurdle. It looked like a very soft unseat as well.
May 28, 2025 at 22:21 #1731421What did he glance across at on the infield moments before his fall? Was he distracted by something?
May 29, 2025 at 00:16 #1731425Looking at the monitor hoping beacon edge was going better than he was zilzal lol,
Not one for conspiracies
But he jumped off that
How those stewards have said no further investigation is bananas
Should be an instant trainer/jockey ban
Hopefully it gets enough attention for it to be so
Was out to 13s on the machine from an early showing of 2.7ish
Doesnt get any worse
May 29, 2025 at 06:27 #1731428It looks even worse when viewed head on:
