Agree with the “For a ride not in keeping with being a professional jockey” suggestion, but where do you place David Maxwell or Gavin Sheehan (who seems to be answering a lot of Stewards’ questions in recent years)?
I also think that if Philip Byrnes should be found guilty, there can’t be a judge or jury on this planet who could overturn such decision. If that would be the case then we better get rid of any rules or stewarding in this sport.
June 3, 2025 at 22:29 #1731868David Maxwell isn’t a professional – he’s officially an amateur.
June 3, 2025 at 22:50 #1731869I don’t think that much different rules apply for him when riding against the pros.
October 30, 2025 at 21:27 #1743346Irish Times reported this afternoon Byrnes to face IHRB hearing re Wexford episode in May. Good to see such swift action! I bet everybody has forgotten what it was all about.
October 31, 2025 at 05:36 #1743361I have forgotten what it was about but can’t be bothered to look it up!
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 14, 2025 at 20:50 #1747601Hearing starts 9.30 tomorrow Monday according to Brian O Connor Irish Times
December 17, 2025 at 12:39 #1747788The Post’s report on the hearing.
Nice to see Davy Russell gave evidence in Byrne’s defence. That is the same Davy Russell who rode plenty of winners for Charles Byrnes, including three at Roscommon one evening, none of which had any good form but all hacked up after being punted off the boards.
Why is his testimony being taken seriously?
December 17, 2025 at 14:59 #1747795Aspell saw it the way it was, but Russell was clearly with the defendant. Why is he even allowed to be on such panel?
As CAS pointed out someone who was part of such a big gamble surely isn’t the right man to defend a cheater. But, that’s how Racing wants it to be.
January 23, 2026 at 19:35 #1751369Why are we waiting……………

For those who follow Irish Racing (unlike me) and are cheesed off at times Brian O’Connors Odds and Sods is worth the free read for the occasional user in todays Irish Times.
February 1, 2026 at 15:58 #1753059Oh dear, the Charles Byrnes plot job got beaten..
February 5, 2026 at 13:33 #1753562They have cleared him of any wrong-doing. Just a poor horseman……
If he is that poor as a jockey, he should be banned from race-riding. He is a huge danger even for himself not only for the horses he’s riding. Back to riding school with him:
February 5, 2026 at 13:45 #1753565“If he is that poor as a jockey, he should be banned from race-riding.”
Agree completely, Ruby. If someone is that incompetent, their licence should be revoked with immediate effect.
February 5, 2026 at 15:50 #1753574The videos and close-up photos showed me someone intentionally falling off a horse
February 5, 2026 at 15:53 #1753575Only one person knows the answer to that.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 10, 2026 at 22:37 #1754226Anyone still suffering from PTSD from reading last week’s findings should have a read of Brian O’Connor’s appraisal in Monday/Sunday’ Irish Times. (Try a different device if locked out) Thank goodness racing has quality journalists with the judiciousness and sagacity of Richard Forristal and Brian O’Connor
February 13, 2026 at 19:29 #1754506Brian O’Connor in Irish Times today puts the boot into the amateurism of Irish Stewarding again for good measure! Doubt we’ll hear much about the possibility of professional stewards from the retired jockeys department in RTE Racing come Fairyhouse
April 2, 2026 at 19:09 #17617807.00 Clonmel. Blue Train, a Byrnes horse, punted in from 5/1 to 5/2.
Young Phillip didn’t fall off that one after the last.

And all Gary, Lisa and Rachel on RTV have to say is “gamble landed”.

Trebles all round!
