Beware Chris;

Handicapping does not create itself – it wells up from unknown depths…..it awakens gradually and all through life it wakes us each morning out of the depths of sleep
Dave – I don’t normally rate on the AW, but happy to give it go, so if you prefer we stick to AW, no problem.
An aside – has anyone use the ‘my cards’ feature on the Racing Post website, as this would be my preferred method for storing AW ratings, it seems straightforward, but are there any hidden horrors?
We could, if all agree, choose the free racecard & ratings race from Timeform. It’s normally one of the better races and is mixture of NH & Aw.
We could then compare our humble thread with the Gold Standard of ratings.
Registration is free and straightforward.

Thank’s David, I wondered why it didn’t work!

Well done David – you can never have enough paper and pens, notebooks, post-its, folders, files, paper clips, hole punch etc etc! I’m one of those sad people that ‘collect’ stationery tems.
What a result Carlisle pulling out a 9/2 shot and a 7/2 shot winning comfortably at 10’s.

I agree David – I shall be staying away from this one.
Similarly to you I’ve got Cusp in at 7/2 (+3.5 on The forecast) and Blueland at 18’s (+2).
However, this is something that I’ve only ever played about with and that was quite a few years ago, so I’m on an upward learning curve.

Having taken on board the advice & help we received yesterday – thanks Alan and Dave. I’ve had a look round for a bit of vaule today (based on my figures). So, here goes.

Hello Alan C – you must have had the old chalk slate and abacus working overtime today (lol), but many thanks for your comments.
David B – I’ve just put the details of Alan’s race on a spreadsheet. If you would like a copy I’ll ping one over to you.
Thanks Dave for the information re: ratings to odds. I shall incorporate this on my spreadsheet tommorrow and report back in a week or so.
My idea behind this is the view that it may help to identify beforehand races where the ratings may be suspect in a more systematic way rather than simply avoiding certain types of races. I’ll explain all next week.
There was a merchant in Baghdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the market-place I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture; now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from the city and advoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the market-place and he saw me standing in the crowd, and he came to me and said, why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, for I have an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.
W Somerset Maugham

I can’t begin to imagine that anybody either on this Forum or who cares about racing in general would condone any form of action that would harm a horses wellbeing.
However, put simply we now live in a world of ‘image’ where content and facts i.e: Walsh being stood down for a day, are secondary. Bearing this in mind I ask the question, did Walsh’s riding of Natal do more potential good or harm to racing?
By the way this season’s NH Hands and Heels series has produced some execellent riding and exicting finishes.
Edit
Thanks Alan – seems a strange old business to me and I think you summed it up perfectly – Crazy!
Thanks LD – but wouldn’t you be paying the £20,000 (less costs) to yourself. I’m still confused :(
This may simply be an example of my ignorance – but can someone explain how you buy back something you already own – I understand the transaction may involve costs and commissions therefore costing the owner but these may be covered by prize money. Or am I missing the point. Thanks.
I get it’s just a way of boosting profits without paying back into racing and I’m also prepared to be generous and assume Cattermole is probably contracted to dance to the organ-grinders tune – but can anyone explain how the whole idea of virtual racing & football got passed the gaming commission.
Upon what grounds was it suggested this form of ‘entertainment’ was beneficial to the masses. I have to admit the introducing of virtual racing seemed to have passed me by.
Interesting point – Seabird – I think the answer is probably yes. We are becoming too obsessed, but I tend to think this is an increasing trend in society nowdays – news for news sake, opinions for opinions sake etc – and not simply confined to Cheltenham.
While I agree with aaftershock it is what makes the jump season entralling, I do sometimes question what overall effect it has on the rest of the racing calander, for example, this season’s Boylesports.com International – £114,040 to the winner, with the fourth horse recieving £10,680 and only four runners.
FSL – I hope these people get paid a lot of money because the cr*p they come out with is – priceless.
